HPV Vaccination protects females against the types of HPV which cause most cases of Cervical Cancer.  Cervical cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the world, and the second most common cancer in women, worldwide. About 6.6% women in India have cervical HPV infection.

How does HPV vaccine works?

HPV Types 16 & 18 are responsible for  cervical cancer. These vaccines make the body's immune system produce antibodies to these HPV types. The antibodies protects the body from getting infected with HPV. The vaccines are given in a series of three shots. In a 6 month period frame you will get all the three shots. The vaccine is recommended to all girls and women from the age of 9 years to 40 years old

Is it safe to take the vaccine?

Studies show that the HPV Vaccine is safe. The common side effects include bruising, itching, redness or tenderness around the area shot is given. There is no other major side effect that has been reported yet.

Where can you get the vaccine?

The vaccines are readily available in India. Speak to your gynecologist, as they will be able to prescribe you the same. They are sold under brand names Cervarix (Rs 3,299 per dose) and Gardasil (Rs 2,800) per dose.
