Amruta asked

Hello Sheetal, My name is Amruta. I am a hardware engineer and worked and studied in San Diego, California for 9 years. I worked at Motorola designing the electrical hardware and in Qualcomm handling the teachnical accounts with the business to business customers. I returned to India worked for a year as it was a lateral transfer and then have been on a career break for 6 years now. I have a daughter who is quiet independent now and so I can rethink about working. My problem is how to get my skillset in front of telecom companies in Mumbai. I tried websites which hardly respond back. I want to get back in the corporate world but I am missing something.. not able to get the right headhunters or contacts in the companies. Please advise.

Hi Amruta, Thanks for reaching out. If i understand right, your Job search has not been in your favour so far. But please be assured, it is temporary situation. You can overcome it if you follow few tips:\n1. If you are unable to get any response from corporate, try your hands at small or medium size companies or start-ups.\n2. Try to update your skills if stuff has changed in your industry in the last 6 years\n3. Network and reach out to your ex-colleagues. The more you meet them and speak to them, you will be able to identify the changed trends in your industry. And you can bridge the gap.\n4, Practice your pitch focussing on what were you doing before the break rather than focussing on the break.\n\nWatch this video, might be helpful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6mIEqtZgps \n\nWish you all the best with your career comeback. Stay connected :)

Hi Ketki, Thanks for reaching out. You have an interesting profile and there are a lot of requirements in the industry for the same. I am unsure about too many WFH options though. You can anyway check out Sheroes Job board for the part time positions available in Pune in Data Warehouse. You can also explore helping out a start-up in similar space. This will allow you to keep your skills relevant and start-ups can offer a great deal of flexibility too. Give it a try and let me know how its going. Would be happy to assist further. All the best :)

Hi Sheetal,\n\nI am a senior finance professional and worked with Companies like Flipkart, Fujitsu, IBM, Glaxosmithkline in key Finance roles. My last assignment was as CFO with a Denmark based IT company. \nI have lost my job 5 months back due to Re-structuring in the company.\n\nIt's been a while and not able to find a suitable opportunity.\nCan you suggest how to handle the situation and what should I ideally do for a new opportunity.\n\nThank you.\n\nMonica

Hi Monica, You seem to have a great profile with good experience. I am sure you are already aware that there are very limited exec level roles, so the first thing that I recommend is keep your cool :) \n\nAlong side your job hunt, are you able to do some consulting with a start-up to help them put together their processes. That will be a value add for your resume and a good way to show what you have been doing during your break. \n\nWhat are Job serach techniques you are using currently? What do you think is the biggest hurdle you are facing? Look forward to hearing from you and helping further. All the best :)

Hi Sheetal,\n\nI have worked as an Editor and Content Developer in the KPO industry and have about 10 years of experience. However, I have had to take a break these last four years to take care of my family. Although I am freelancing currently, I have been trying to get back into the industry for a long time now and nothing has worked out so far. I do understand some of the hurdles that need to be overcome such as working on my profile, the need to upskill, and the gap in my experience. However, I would need your guidance in working through this. I could write to you on your email ID in detail if that’s fine with you.\nThank you for taking time to go through my message.\nThanks,\nVinutha

hello Sheetal..this is manjula..I have worked in a FMCG MNC company for 6.3 years in quality assurance..I was on a break from last 3.3 years..want to start career again.but i m not getting any job offer..no one want to offer a job with such a gap..moreover i m not much confident that i would be able to satisfy interviewer's questions after this gap of three years..feeling a bit negative..plz guide me how can i get job offers and how would i be able to compete with the other persons who r still in job and giving that interview
12 Jul 2017, 07:24pm
Hi Manjula, Thanks for reaching out. Help me understand the hurdle.. Is your resume getting shortlisted, and you are being called for interviews. If your answer is yes, then your gap is not an issue with prospective employer. As they have shortlisted your resume. If you are unable to crack the interview - let's focus on that. Here are a few tips - Practice the interview in front of a mirror; Get a 30 sec pitch for yourself - not focussing on your break but on your qualification, experience and skill set; attend a few workshops that will make your more confident. If you need to discuss this further, reach out to me at sheetal@womenrestart.com. All the best!

Hi Ruchi, Are you inclined towards a specific subject? There are various online tutoring companies who hire professionals like yourselves. A good way to start will be to start teaching kids in your neighborhood. This will help you get well versed with the syllabus and you will gain some experience before you apply for jobs. Also, customize your CV and highlight your skills relevant to a career in teaching. Hope this helps. All the best :)

Hi Sheetal,\nI have been working as a freelance Business Development Specialist for the last two years and also completed a certification from a Reputed International University. I am looking out for a full time job while yet taking up Freelance Projects. My question here is that in spite of mentioning to every single HR that I am now paid on an hourly basis, why do they are still consider my previous drawn salary that was about two years ago. My current remuneration per hour is much higher compared to the last CTC. Why do HR's still stick with the CTC with the previous company as my current salary. Do the HR's today understand that a candidate can take up freelance and be paid more that previous salary. Do HRs know how to consider the freelance professionals remuneration and devise something based on that? How do I handle such a situation? what should I present here and how? How do we negotiate our salary for taking up a job further?
07 Jul 2017, 11:45am
Hi Vidhya, Its a tricky one. Initial HR screening of most of the companies follow pre-defined processes. They have guidelines in place to decide the percentage hike on last drawn salary. However, during the final rounds of interview, candidates get an opportunity to elaborate the scenario and set the expectation. \nIt is also evident that freelance remuneration is higher compared to a full time job, keeping in mind the stability factor. Having said that, organizations are adapting and policies are evolving. I am confident that you will find an opportunity that appreciates your experience and is is willing to offer you something inline with your expecation. Soon :) All the best!

06 Jul 2017, 11:39am
Hi Shubhangi, Congrats on taking charge of your career. A lot of organizations today are offering great deal of flexibility. Infact, a couple of our clients in Bangalore offer early start and early finish hours. A lot of companies even have dedicated returnee programs for women which do not have heavy work pressure and strict deadlines. But, you have to earn it in an interview. If you ask this question in an interview without demonstrating your passion for your career restart, it might be a red flag for the interviewer. If however, you are sure you are unable to work beyond 3 pm - freelancing can be an option. If you have decided that you want to change careers - You will have to retrain in that field and start afresh. Something for you to carefully decide. Anyway, drop me a note if you need to know more about reskilling options. Happy to help. All the best :)

The biggest hurdle i am facing is i am not getting good offers.the offers which i am getting they are providing very low salary just for a graduate.Second the companies are not big i am getting call from that type of companies which are either not registered or they are giving me profile in marketing.

I understand. This can be a tricky situation. There are 2 possible ways you can consider - 1) Take up a course in an evolving trend in HR that you would like to build your capability in. If you invest in yourself, organizations see it as your commitment towards your career 2) Take up the job in a smaller company but with a challenging role. The salary might not be great but be assured that once you get back in the game - you will scale pretty quickly. And your resume will be attractive to larger organizations also. Hope this helps! All the best :)
