Megha, Very few companies offer part time or work from home options. Though i am a big advocate for assimilating women in workforce and offering them such opportunities. There are few startups who can help you find your dream job - Sheroes, Back to the Front, Reboot.in since they operate in this space and help women find part time / full time / flexible / work from home jobs. Hi Poonam, Dont let your physical disability be a deterrant. Earn your graduation and focus on acquiring skills which are in demand from employer point of view. Work from home is still not acceptable or mainstream in India. Sheroes , PlugHR, BacktoFront, Reboot Network are some companies who coordinate work from home options for women.

Hi Ruchi, I have worked 8+ years in CSC...last year left my job due to some family concerns..wanted to join back..dont get much calls now..I have different skill set during my work tenure in CSC..that includes ATG, WCS and Java..I am looking for individual development roles which nobody prefers at 8+ years of experience or WFH or freelancing as well..I dont want to to teamlead or project manager in IT as wants to balance out that time with family... now I have a sabbatical break of 1.3 years.. so little bit of disappointment is there as at times there are no interview calls and other times interviews dont clear up...do you have any suggestions?
19 Sep 2016, 03:44pm
Hi Shuchita, Thanks for reaching out. I am glad to know you have clarity in terms of what kind of work you would like to do ie to be an individual contributor. All of us have different priorities at different stages in Life. And our work priorities and preferences change which is ok. Having a break in Career puts women at a certain disadvantage but so long you can explain - it is ok to take break from work too and focus on life. Now as an employer - all i am interested in what skills you bring to table and how you can make a difference. Write a compelling narrative and connect with recruiters , HR folks , IT folks on twitter, social media. Thats new age recruiting. Companies are investing time and resources finding talent through Social Media. Dont get disappointed, in the meanwhile, use this downtime to updgrade your skills. Security Skills are in demand. Just an example - you can Do a Certification in Secure Computing or Build your Digital Skills. Many courses are offered free on Coursera.org. Keep on learning, building new skills , adding new skills to your portfolio . Search for Jobs on Linkedin . Thats the new place where recruiters are hiring candidates from . Build connections, Invest time in networking, meeting people at conferences . Many New startups are willing to take bet on people and offer work from home or flexible work options. Invest time in building 2 min elevator pitch and articulate your value proposition clearly to potential employers. All the Best.

(Replied by SHEROES Coach via SHEROES Career Helpline) Hi Sowmya ,\n\nThank you for reaching out ! My name is Adi and I will be helping you with this query. Our apologies on the delayed response\n\nYou can take a quick look at the jobs available by clicking on " jobs " on our home page. You can further filter these to be relevant to you by adding more search tags for example on the field you want to work in. Say searching " testing " for testing jobs. All companies listed on Sheroes have nothing against hiring someone with a small gap on their work experience. \n\nHowever, for us to be able to guide you appropriately and for any potential employer to review your application a lot of information regarding your work experience, where and when did you get your diploma , skillsets apart from medication , projects you have worked on, whether you want to work full time or part time or want to freelance or work from home etc. should be present on your profile. I am taking this opportunity to recommend that you fill out all the details on your profile page - since your profile acts as both your resume and cover letter on Sheroes. Once you have filled in your profile, do write in to us again. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Sutapa, You need not quit job to support kids. Take maternity leave , extend it. Find details about leave policy. Get a full time maid to support you to take care of kids. Talk to your manager about flexi work , work from home, part time work option at IBM. My advice- dont quit your job. Take help from your spouse, in laws. Create a support system for yourself. Your job/ career is as important as your husband's. It is extra work for women to take care of kids and work but doable with support system in place. Regards, Ruchi

Hi Ruchi, I did BCA from Osmania University and graduated back in 2003. Unfortunately, I could not get a job in IT and had to opt for medical transcription. I have around 12 years of experience in medical transcription field and working as home-based editor for past 5 years. In the past, I took crash courses on technical writing and software testing but could not get a job. Now, I have enrolled for online data science course in a bid to become a data scientist and change my field. I am completely new to data science and having difficulty completing the course as it requires one to be good at programming and statistics and some level of experience in data analysis --none of which I seem to have. I am now into the 4th month of the 9-month date science specialization. Do you think i should go ahead with the data science course or continue with medical transcription where I am stagnating? I would really appreciate your suggestions.

Hi Ruchi, I have worked as a software engineer at Tech Mahindra for 6+ years. Its been 2 years that I have quit my job. I have been working as a freelance content writer for close to an year now. I would like to continue as a writer as I have totally gone blank on technical skills. I realize there are technical writing jobs which amalgamate technical and writing skills to an extent. But I need to be very strong financially because unfortunately I am now a single mom with responsibility of a two years old son. So I need a stable job in writing preferably or do you think it is better to get back to technical job after maybe a training? I have worked on java (e-commerce domain) earlier. Please suggest a suitable training to either get back my technical skills or a writing skills training which can also offer me a good job or any other career that I can look for with these skill set. Awaiting your help..

Hi Rashmi, Thanks for reaching out. Life is all about priorities and learning and doing different things in Life. I read a book on Freelance writing recently. There are assignments which are available to Freelance writers. Ask yourself what you are good at, what is your purpose, what do you enjoy doing and go after it. Acquiring new skills never hurt. After 15 years of professional experience, i learnt photoshop. You can consider adding new skills to your portfolio, eg Digital Marketing, Analytics, Security Certification if it interests you. Demand of professionals with these skills is high . All the Best Regards, Ruchi

Hi Ruchi Seek to connect with you for advise on way forward on my domain of expertise - Marketing/ Brand Management/Communications. Just to give an overview on my profile : 1. 14.2 years of work experience in my domain with 7.2 yrs in Category Marketing & 6.5 in Advertising. 2. Education : PGP, MICA, Ahmedabad (Class of 2001) & B.Arch, IIEST (Class of 1999) 3.My latest assignment was with Greenply Industries Limited as VP-Marketing, based out of Gurgaon (October 2015) 4. Married with a 5 yr old daughter, husband (surgeon) & dependant mother I had taken a break for 2.5 months for personal reasons, and I am actively on the look out to resume my career. My main issue is there are not too many opportunties in my domain at a senior level in Kolkata, and since I have not worked outside the city except for my previous asignment, I am usually not considered for positions in other cities, as employers are sceptical about relocation intent and stability of a woman candidate whose family is based out of another city. I am very keen not to derail my career and am ready to relocate for the right opportunity. Seek your advise on: 1. How should I strategise my search, given my background? 2. If you could provide some leads on credible talent management companies, who can assist in international placements in my domain. Look forward to your response. Very best. Anamika

Dear Shilpa, I am glad you are thinking back to work again. I am big advocate that Women must Work - either Flexi, Work from home or Full time - whatever is convenient to them and leverage their skills, education, talent . Since you dont want to go back to mainframe , it really depends what interests you . I can suggest few pointers based on my experience and observations about Job Market. Learn - Digital Marketing , Social Media Marketing can be done from home. Digital Vidya offers 6 months online certification Web Designing Graphics - Photoshop, Illustrator Learn Wordpress, How to Create Websites on Wordpress Cybersecurity Certification - shortage of Cybersecurity experts. Hope this guidance helps you to pursue your aspirations :-) All the Best. Do write back when you realize your dream. Regards, Ruchi

Hi Shweta, Have your tried exploring , asking for Flexi work from your current Employer ? If they trust you, find you are good enough for them and if the role can be done from home, they may let you work from home for 2- 3 days in a week initially and more days later. Ask for work from home option from your employer. At the most, they will say No. Register for Work from home HR Jobs on PlugHR. Contact Rakshita Dwivedi and you can share my reference. All the Best.

Dear Rachna, Thank you for writing to me. Life is about ups and downs. Dealing with vagaries in Life is what sets us apart. As a Woman , I relate to and I do understand what sacrificing for family means. Kudos to you. However, good thing is that you are investing in yourself and about to complete PMP certification. IBM too hires qualified Project managers and certification only helps. Many companies are now open to hire women who took a break for family or whatever personal reasons and welcome them to join the workforce. You can apply to IBM jobs here. http://ibm-india.jobs/ . 22 Jul 2015, 07:21am
Dimpal, Thanks for reaching out. You are currently employed with a good Employer. You did not mention how many years of experience you have. Your situation is tricky. My advise would be dont leave your current job unless you find a flexi / WFH option or another job . Searching a job is a long hunt and could take more months. Is there an option that your husband continue to take care of your mother and you provide/ pay for a nursing support to pursue your Career. It really depends on what your priorities are. Try to Negotiate with your current employer for work from home if your role allows, or find out the hr policy for extended leave , they can let you go on a sabbatical , if your performance is good and they want to retain you, they should let you take extended leave. In the meanwhile, search for jobs with startups who are open to offer Work From Home so long you deliver on your work. Being a working women in India is tough, to manage both home life and work life but many women do it . They usually create a support system for themselves at home / office. Regards, Ruchi

I was very much confident educated working gal but my life is totally changed now. After marriage I left my job to relocate with my husband. After 1 year gap I again started working but my in laws and husband conspiracy made me leave my job again as I was forced for a child so had to again leave my job due pregnancy complication because of my in laws and husband harrasment during pregnancy and when I delivered child my husband and in laws left house with everything including my stuff without informing me or my parents and now I am staying with my parents with 1 month baby and few pairs of clothes. Dont know what to do as my dad is also getting retire next month so feel like burden for them. I want to pursue my career again and support myself and my child but dont know how to do it. Trying hard for jobs but not getting any chance. I am very much depressed please help me please

Mahi, Its unfortunate that your in laws and husband treated you badly and your husband left you instead of providing love, affection even after a baby. But such is Life. Bad things happen to good people. Dont loose heart. I appreciate your courage that you opened up and want to improve your Life and you are right, by being employed again, you will gain further confidence . Hello Rapneet, Unless one takes a complete look at your profile, its difficult to comment on why you are not getting calls despite good experience and exposure. Do you have the relevant experience in the field of analytics or are you just starting out in this field ? Are there companies which are willing to let you gain experience in this field first ? I recommend, gain experience and then try to switch to companies of your interest. Pursuing MBA is a right decision. Evaluate your options and then make a right choice. You may like to contact some recruiting consultants of repute to land a job. Also, stay upto date on latest tech trends and your field of technology. Thanks & Regards, Ruchi

Hi Viral, Different people pursue job for different reasons, mostly people for money, and some people are lucky to find a calling in their Life. Whatever be the reason, employer wants a skilled and talented candidate to do the job . And employee wants recognition for hard work. The equation is simple. I dont know what your skillsets are, but having 8 years of work experience, is a good thing to have by on your side. Through CV candidates make the first impression. Is your cv upto date and reflects your experience in the best light ? What needs to be done differently to get noticed by a recruiter ? make sure your Linkedin profile is upto date. Hello Ruchi, Thanks for your msg. i'm currently based in Hyderabad, and l've been into HR roles. I've around 6+yrs of experience in HR related roles and have completed PGCHRM certification course from XLRI. Though, i believe that i can take up a core HR role, but i've been finding it difficult to get the same. I have not been able to hit the right job yet, which would give me the opportunity to utilize my competencies. the higher certification has increased my confidence to take up broader roles and responsibilities, but, employers ignore my learning and knowledge and only start pointing out the gaps, less work exp etc.. I have tried convincing that i've not got the right opportunity yet , but given the right role and with little mentoring, i would be able to carry out all tasks , but then it has been disappointing not to get the same. there has been a big gap, as i want to join an orgn , where there is a career and growth path, which provides me stability. ( i really don't want to switch jobs now, as i'm looking for an opp which would be a win-win one), ( well this is my perspective) i believe, with your rich experience you would be able to suggest me as to how to go about it. i would be very thankful. Thanks & Regards, Lipsa Hyderabad
07 Apr 2015, 03:15pm
Hi Lipsa, Thanks for reaching out. In Hyderabad, i would recommend connect and reach out to Achut Menon , he owns an Executive Search firm and places candidates for CXO roles, but his team will help you find a suitable opportunity in HR. My other recommendation to you would be, find a culture fit with the organization, even if it is a role with less responsibility, take it , if the employer and role is interesting. Many a times, employers hire a person in a role and if the scope is there, you can grow into that role and take on higher responsibilities. Recruitment is a match making process. Employer will want evidence that you are the right person to do a senior role and you would want to know that the employer will offer career growth . Look for the culture fit and meaningful assignments in your new job. Do you have too many offers to choose from ? Then Take your time, eventually you will find the right fit. Otherwise, Keep your options open. No job is little or small , every job is a humbling experience, it is what you make of the job and role , that matters. Career, Growth and Stability - all three you will find at IBM. You can try your luck at IBM - http://ibm-india.jobs/ Apply for jobs directly on the Mobile Career Website. All the Best, Ruchi

Hi Manisha, Thanks for reaching out. Glad to know you are contemplating a Career change. It is difficult though not impossible. You have to be prepared to start out as a fresher while making a career switch . HR is vast , you may like to begin as a HR Generalist and after gaining few years experience , you may like to specialize. Identify your real motivators for becoming a HR Professional. Get a formal education ( part time MBA HR ) or SHRM certification . Follow industry HR leaders. Join communities of Practice (HR) to learn about the field as much as possible. Mostly all HR jobs will require you to have some experience. However, few agencies eg into Recruiting may be willing to give you a break provided you bring the right skillsets, competencies to the table and demonstrate that you are the right fit for the job. First goal is to get entry into HR domain and then Make your way up afterwards. Acquiring certification is another way of signalling that you are serious about the profession. IIMs & XLRI and such institutes of repute offer HR certifications in partership with Hughes. Sharing few resources with you for your perusal 1. WOWHR Community ( Founded by myself and my HR friends) - https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/107881922633216461814 2. I have been a part of IBM for 6 years was in the software profile but was also actively involved in training, tech interviews and business facilitation programs Now i have my own development compnay www.toruksoftware.com But I miss the co-operate training's...and sessions, I am a good speaker, wanted guidance from you regarding ..how i could do that on a freelance basis, as food for the soul .
09 Dec 2014, 08:22am
Chhavi, Kudos for starting out your own venture and being a role model to other men/ women who contemplate to branch off from corporate world to pursue their dreams. At the same time, I realize you miss the intellectually stimulating Corporate environment too and have interest in Facilitation / Corporate trainings. Congratulations, you are highly self aware, have goal clarity as to what you want to do next/ parallely which can be the energizer in your Life. Probably, I am not the best person to advise on Freelancing opportunities however I will share few insights from my observation I would advise, the best way to swim is to jump into the pool. Freelancing is an option . If you are good, word of mouth will get you Clients. What kind of training programs you like to facilitate ? Who will be your target audience, How will you reach out to prospective customers ? Why should Corporates hire you for the workshop ? What's your USP ( unique value proposition) Articulate your value proposition clearly . Who will create the training content ? What problems are you trying to solve for the client through your training programs ? Once you have answers to these questions, you will have clarity on next steps. Reaching out and offering your talents will become relatively easy . Do associate yourself with some of the training houses that work with corporates who look out for freelance trainers. That could be a good starting point. Startups ususally do not have a full fledged HR/ Corporate training team in the growth phase, however they have a need to do Motivational / Team Dynamics sort of programs. Third is Conferences, there are thousands of Conferences organized in India every year. Select pick that matches your areas of interest , that can be good avenue to offer your your expertise , connect with Influencers, Decision Makers . This is how An acquaintance recently got to associate himself with a prestigious organization, after attending a Conference and following up with Decision maker and a suitable opportunity landed up his way. Specialize in 1-2 training programs at the minimum to become with , which would be your flagship offering. Connect with and Talk to freelancers. Santosh Babu is a reputed & known name in this field . Of course, there are many more I am not aware. There are certain institutes which make you a Certified Facilitator. Explore if such certifications are the right fit for you and would help you move forward and make way in this area. Network and Learn from those who have charted the similar path before us. It can be one good way to find directions future in Life & accomplish your goals , dreams. Kudos for software startup and bakery startup too. I hope I will learn to bake good cakes from you. Happy to connect, Chhavi. Hope I answered your question to an extent but keep talking to other folks too . Go after something that you truly want. When you know why , you will figure out How soon :-)

Hi, I have done my MBA from K.J Somaiya Institute of Mgt studies & research- Mumbai in the yr 2001 and majored in marketing. Thereafter I joined Godrej & Boyce as Asst manager- Product. I worked for 3 yrs and after which I moved to ICICI bank and worked till 2009 handling various roles like Compliance, Pdt management Acquisition etc. I had to quit in May 2009 to take care of my new born baby. As my husband is in Army,I moved to various locations with him taking care of my daughter and taking teaching assignments in college. Recently we have moved to Kolkata and wants desperately to get back to corporate life as I feel there lies my true calling. so far I have applied in various job sites but have been unsuccessful. my detailed resume is there with sheroes. It would be of great help if u could guide and help in my quest for job.

Swagata, Thank you for reaching out and entrusting me to help you in your current situation. From my personal experience, I can say that Life is all about different priorities taking centre stage at different phases. It is little unfortunate that Corporates havent evolved much to accomodate the needs of women. Especially for Women who like to return to Corporate Life after motherhood. But times are changing. Sheroes is doing a great job to help women connect with their passions, interests and utilize their talents. You in your individual capacity can do a lot. Look beyond traditional Career options. Invest in reskilling or reinventing yourself. Are your leveraging Social Media to your advantage ? I know of 3 cases who were hired by Top Corporates due to their Digital Footprints in last few years. Companies will be ready to hire someone who already have demonstrated expertise on Social Media platforms . What I am suggesting you to do - 1. Develop your Personal Brand 2. Social Network with Like minded professionals. Join groups on Facebook / communities on twitter. 3. Market yourself differently - Create a video capturing your talents ad what skillsets/ value you bring to the table, upload on youtube, promote on Linkedin. ( Here is the Happy News- Social Hiring is on the rise ) 4. Community Management is a rare skill. Pick these newer age skills. Marketing Function is also disrupted . What worked 10 years ago doesnt work anymore. 5) . Enroll in MOOCs. ( Free courses on Coursera) . it will Demonstrate to companies that you are open to learn. Invest in yourself. Explore and Learn more. Stay Curious. All the best with your job search. I am requesting Sheheroes team for a copy of your cv . http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2014-12-04/news/56723088_1_social-skills-social-media-social-networking http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2014-12-04/news/56723088_1_social-skills-social-media-social-networking Search and apply for relevant jobs here http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2014-12-04/news/56723088_1_social-skills-social-media-social-networkings/
