Hi Mehnaz. Thank you so much for the info. So are these certifications valued more over masters degree in human resources ? And if I get these certifications or masters degree after few yrs exp, i would be considered as fresher for other roles right ? And as per my understanding, for HR generalist role, its like either previous exp is required or the certifications r required ? Though my post graduation is MCA, my graduation was in commerce, bcom. It somehow happened. And I can understand and perform money aspects to some extent. So I had just thought abt generalist role a while. But now I'm almost clarified. I hope I didn't trouble u with too many questions.

Hi Mehnaz. This is regarding our previous discussion on HR roles. Now that I HV decided to get into recruitment after my career gap, I was going through all recuiter job postings in various websites. To be frank, I felt the yrly package is less compared to other HR roles. I felt even with 3+ or 5+ yrs exp as recruiter, there was not much gap in the package. Now getting back to work as recruiter after career gap seems to be good. But what would be recruiter career path after few yrs of exp. If there is not much growth as a recruiter, can I change to other HR roles after few yrs. Since iam MCA , if iam not wrong few of those roles like compensation or payroll side needs finance background and I can't get into that field right. So please suggest me distance education courses or certifications req for other roles within my possibility.

Hello Rama ,\n\n You made a good analysis of the job and the compensation .\nBut also note , any job be it in HR or otherwise ,it works on the principle\nof demand and supply\nHR recruiters are in abundance including freelancers , hence the average\nsalaries are just normal\n\nCareer Path : For recruiter the career path is pretty simple , people into\nthe recruitment actaully end up with strong network in a given industry\nExample Let us say you become a recruiter in telecom , after 8 years in\nthe field, you will actually have a thick network of people in the Telecom\ndomain and would be still doing recruitment ,but will make money since you\nwill be in a position to hire easily across all levels both junior and\nsenior\n\nRecruitment pathway in a corporate sector like a company ,is where one can\neven become Head of Recruitment\nbut as freelancers , contract recruiters there is no path way , and no\ntitle\nthe only thing one gain is experience ,and good network\n\nFrom recruitment to other verticals of HR may be a bit of a challenge ,\nbecause experience counts and one has to have experience to get in fields\nof HR generalist or Business Partner or Talent Management\n\nPayroll and Compensation does not require finance knowledge\nYou should be knowing Indian Tax structure and Laws related to salary\n,labor laws ,like Gratuity , PF, govt mandated benefits\n\nPayroll and compensation is a field ,where mostly the work is done by high\nend software\nbut it is one of the niche filed in HR , where one has to have complete\nknowledge of Tax and its impact on employees and the benefits and its\nimpact on employees\nexample Medical Insurance , meal vouchers ,the new maternity benefits ,\nthe limits to each tax bracket.\n\nthe most challenging part is ,the tax regulations keep changing every\nyear,so people also need to keep themselves abreast of the current trends\nin the market\n\nIf you really want to get into HR and also grow in it , take up courses from\nHRCI like SPHR https://www.hrci.org/\nSHRM like SHRM SCP https://www.hrci.org/\nSHRM distance course \nhttps://www.hrci.org/\nSHRM Hewitt course https://www.hrci.org/\nSHRM are reputed organizations , but a bit costly , which will give you\ncertificate and the certificate carries weight age in the HR world\n\nHope this helps\n\n\n\nBest Regards,\nMehnaz Amjad *PMP,SHRM SCP ,ITILv3*\nPh :+91 9177400155\n\n\n

Hi Mehnaz as we hvvdiscussed, I want to do some freelance projects as IT recruiter in talentbazar and other websites. But I think most of them are approaching freelancers with previous experience in that particular area. But I HV prev 3+ exp in Development but not as recruiter.and then ong gap after that. So how should I deal with my resume gap and exp as recruiter so that I get shortlisted for freelance work. I HV done few work from home contracts here and there few yrs back after resigning from job. But I don't HV any proofs of those clients ,neither proper payrolls so that I can mention that exp as well to reduce the gap. Due to long gap and lack of prev exp in other fields like HR , I'm finding it difficult to highlight my resume and get shortlisted?. I may HV to wait for some more time, but just wanted to chk with u to be on safe side
03 May 2017, 10:43pm
Hi Rama ,\n\nWhatever work you had done in the past , just mention it on your resume\n,along with the client you had worked for and make sure it highlight your\nknow how of the technology you had worked in\n\nEven if you do not have any payroll or employer data to tell ,that you had\nworked in a given organization , it does not matter\n\nThese days especially when you take up freelance jobs and work from homes\nand work for multiple organizations ,it is of utmost importance to\nhighlight all your work in a manner which reflect your experience\n\nAlso , If you atleast have the email correspondence you may have exchange\nwith the people you worked in the past for your freelance work ? try to dig\nthose emails and always keep them safe\n\nNext ,write your resume in a smart way and highlight what you had done , do\nnot worry about the proofs''\n\nEven if the organization ask , you can anytime tell them that you have\nworked as a freelancer , and can produce email exchange with the firms you\nhave worked with as proof. This should be sufficient enough .\n\nCheck freelancer.com and upwork.com these websites also offer freelance\nwork both in IT and HR\nAnd when you submit your Bio or Profile in these websites ,make sure you\nkeep changing it ,modifying it to the requirement of the project .\n\nI wish you lots of luck and Good wishes ahead .\n\nBest Regards,\nMehnaz Amjad *PMP,SHRM SCP ,ITILv3*\nPh :+91 9177400155\n\n\n

02 May 2017, 09:27pm
Hi Neelu,\n\nThanks for writing in .\n\nBased on your past experience mostly into marketing, sales and HR ,the best\nthing you can take up after the Gap of 4 years is into Marketing and sales\nmore than HR\n\nI shall explain you why\n\nHaving worked with the real estate ,despite the break which is normal for\nmost of the married women with kids , you hold experience in Mkt and sales\nalong with HR\nGoing back to the Mkt and sales will not only assist you in career growth\nbut also count the 5 years you had spent in itn\n\nIf you chose only to go back to HR , then you may have to opt to for either\na admin job or a operations job\nfor rest other functions of HR since you do not have enough experience ,you\nwill be treated like a fresher\nand you may find it difficult to get into a good role within HR '.\n\nTherefore I suggest work on your skills ,which you are good at , take up\ndigital marketing course , which is in demand today , take the Google\nDigital marketing course\n\nhttps://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalunlocked/?utm_source=sem&utm_campaign=du_in_h1_17&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=bkws_exact&gclid=CjwKEAjw3KDIBRCz0KvZlJ7k4TgSJABDqOK7wkY1SHhbC_2oNilzDd28nuaauJSM9tCzKlO9rgFkkxoCL4jw_wcB\n\nhttps://www.inc.com/larrykim/top5freeonlinecoursesfordigitalmarketers.html\n\n\nwhatever you choose , always keep the long term plan in head , and what you\nare good at '.\n\nHope this helps , do write back if you need any more information\n\n\n\n\nBest Regards,\nMehnaz Amjad *PMP,SHRM SCP ,ITILv3*\nPh :+91 9177400155\n\n\n

Hi Mehnaz.sorry for late reply. I Was in journeys continuously. And thanks a ton for giving such a precise and clear info on my queries. I shall put forth my opinions now. I am actually more passionate abt my career as a developer.but recently when I HV decided to work again,I was going thru all the blogs and job portals including sheroes ,jobsforher etc. I noticed that all the job options, returnee internships, reentry positions were for non tech jobs. And I came to know from blogs and friends that tech ppl r not getting calls who HV career gaps of more 3 or 4yrs. And I HV 8 yrs gap. So I almost lost hope in tech jobs. It is then I HV chose non tech jobs for reentry. But I'm not regretting for this. I HV confidence that whatever I chose I will do my best.and irrespective of my interest in tech or nontech...I will upskill myself with all the latest technologies and accept anything which comes my way. I just want to break the gap. But as u said I will upskill and try for tech jobs as well as I was already into it. But then if at all I won't get calls , I want to be ready for non tech positions also. So I need more guidance for non tech jobs.so for this 1. What type of HR job give a good career ? Like as u said HR recruiter or still any? 2. What r the courses I HV to take for these 3. Sorry for being ignorant .Will freelance give me work exp proof or something similar so that i can mention in resume.
28 Apr 2017, 03:05am
Hello Rama ,\n\nIn order to assist you with preparation of Non Tech roles , here are the\nanswers :\n\n 1. What type of HR job give a good career ?\nHR has 4 main functions , Recruitment , Training , Employee relations and\nCompensation\na)For Training , one may need to be certified in various international\ntraining certificates ,like Dale Carnegie , MBIT ,\nGallup etc .\nThere is one more segment to Training which is into technical training ,\nlike teaching candidates or students on technology\nthis can range from as basic as MS excel , to hadoop, Java ,.net etc\nb)Employee relations manage the end to end of employee life cycle ,right\nfrom hire to retire , including performance appraisal ,\ngrievances ,promotion , attrition , succession planning , salary etc\nThis will be a little tough to get in, because this demands someone being\nin it for some time\nand they always look for experience people in this HR ROLE\nc)Compensation & Benefits this is about doing salary survey and analysis\nand providing consulting services on the latest salary trends in the\nindustry , it is a bit niche skill and require lot of understanding of Tax\n, and Govt mandated benefits given to employees so that a salary\nstructure can be build around it .\nd)Recruitment this has two aspects ,technical hiring and non tech hiring\n.The recruitment cycle is the same, which starts from sourcing screening\n interviewing and then offer generation\nThis is the easiest to get into ,and would suggest you can explore the\ntechnical hiring side , which will be an advantage for you know the\nbasics of technology\n\n\n 2. What r the courses I HV to take for these\nThere are no courses prescribed for recruitment , some companies do offer\nlike Aon Hewitt or SHRM\nbut i dont think courses in recruitment carry any weight age\nThe only area where courses are relevant and are sought is the Training and\nin some cases Compensation\notherwise there are no such courses required .\n\n 3. Sorry for being ignorant .Will freelance give me work exp proof or\nsomething similar so that i can mention in resume.\nYes, as freelancer you can show it as a work experience , because\nfreelancing is also work , the only difference is you are not working with\none company as a permanent employee\nin your resume as freelancer , you can write about various clients you had\nworked with ,giving details also about your work\n\n\n\n\n\nBest Regards,\nMehnaz Amjad *PMP,SHRM SCP ,ITILv3*\nPh :+91 9177400155\n\n\n

Hi Mehnaz. Thanks a lot for ur inputs and suggestions. I am sorry that I couldn't download my resume from my gmail. Will send u very soon after creating new one. But will highlight main points here. I have 2.9 yrs of development exp In java/j2ee from GE healthcare, blore from 2006-2009. I resigned the job in 2009 to take care of my kids. Now I'm ready to take up my career further and open to new challenges preferable in IT field again. But due to my long gap I heard from sources that chances r very less to restart my career. I am open to other non technical positions also. But could u plz clear me these queries. 1.iam an MCA, so To take up as HR ,do I need to be Mba ? 2. Since I don't have any hands-on experience in non technical positions.,will I be considered for those as a fresher with gap 3.does freelancing work be considered by corporate world to give job as a regular employee? 4. Since my final aim is to get a regular employment in companies, what r my chances and how do I proceed with such a huge gap?
25 Apr 2017, 04:13am
Hello Rama,\n\nLet me answer all your queries one by one\n\n1.iam an MCA, so To take up as HR ,do I need to be MBA ?\nAnswer Not necessarily , but my advice is ,pursue career on your skills\nand strengths , which will help you in the long run\nDo not think , if technically you wont get a job , shifting to a non tech\njob would help .\n If you have good experience , regardless of the gap , focus on\nbuilding and honing your skills\nLearn about the latest technologies and try to take up a course in it\nAccordingly apply to technical jobs , which support your previous technical\nexpereince and the current course you may have learned\nExample : you are aware of JAVA , you can now opt for Angular JS or\nsomething new and latest in JAVA\nwhich will definitely fetch you a very good job .\n\n\n2. Since I don't have any handson experience in non technical\npositions.,will I be considered for those as a fresher with gap?\nYes , people often with non tech experience may get into HR roles or other\nadmin roles , but they have to start from the beginning and if you\nevaluate yourself from Recruiter's perspective , your resume may look like\na mix of tech and non tech ,fitting nowhere .\nFocus on specializing in technologies\n\nMy advice is not to venture into fields ,which do not support your skill\nand what you want to do .\nDo not think HR or admin or non tech jobs are easy , or are good paying\njobs, the reality is they are not\nand have their own set of challenges in it\n\n3.does freelancing work be considered by corporate world to give job as a\nregular employee?\n\nNo , these days you will find lot of people doing freelancing\n,especially people from the IT world and it is absolutely normal to do so\nThis is called Gig Economy\nSo even if you freelance today , later on you may get a corporate job as a\nregular employee\nthe chances are high ,so don't worry\n\n\n4. Since my final aim is to get a regular employment in companies, what r\nmy chances and how do I proceed with such a huge gap?\n\nThe best approach to find a good job , and a job which you can make a\ncareer out of it should be your aim\nStep 1 Research or find out about the latest technologies in JAVA and\nthe career prospects\nStep 2 Find out a good institute to do the course ,which may also offer\nplacement\nStep 3 Invest and learn the new technologies\nStep 4 in the interim ,connect and check within your friends and network\nabout the latest technologies\nStep 5 Once you successfully obtain your relevant certificates on the\nlatest technologies , look for jobs both permanent and freelancing and I'm\nsure you will definitely find great openings\n\ncheck this links\n\nhttp://blog.takipi.com/7newtoolsjavadevelopersshouldknow/\nhttp://www.fromdev.com/2016/12/whatislatesttechnologyinjava.html\nhttps://www.naukri.com/javaj2eedeveloperjobs\nhttps://www.naukri.com/javaj2eejobs\nhttp://www.zyoin.com/indianindustryfuturejavajavajobs/\n\n\nBest Regards,\nMehnaz Amjad *PMP,SHRM SCP ,ITILv3*\nPh :+91 9177400155\n\n\n

Hello Sloka ,\n\nSince you hold a MBA degree , you already have a Masters's qualification\n\nNow on to your Job search which you want on flexible timings , understand\nflexi timings concept of corporates\nFlexi timings is different from work from home\nFlexi timings means , you have flexibility to come and go at your own\nconvenience but one has to clock in 8 hrs of work every single day , the\nflexibility is about no set schedule\nSo be clear wether you need flexi timings or Work from Home , since you are\nmarried with Kids\n\nWith MBA as a qualification , but since you have a long gap ,you can do the\nfollowing\n\n1.Opt for Teaching ,but you may need a B.Ed other than the MBA to do so ,\nthis is an additional course you can enroll in ,and you may find good\noffers\n\n2.You can also go for recruitment as an MBA , there is a huge need of\nfreelance recruiters and you can take it up , it is more flexible as well\n\nhttps://www.naukri.com/freelancerecruiterjobs\n\nThis one I found on LinkedIN , do send in your resume to the given email\naddress\nRecruiters needed . Full time and Work From Home .IT and NON IT .\nExperience 16yrs . Fulltime Time / part time / work from home / freelance.\nSalary : 2045 K CTC . Immediate Need . Email resumes to hr@cloud9india.in\nwith 'Recruiter' in subject for faster response from us . Company URL :\nwww.cloud9india.in. Professionals looking to build a new career in IT & Non\nIT Recruitment can also apply\n\n\n3.You can also take up admin jobs , which are usually are also seeking\npeople with MBA\nhttps://www.naukri.com/freelancerecruiterjobs\n\nThis this helps !\n\n\nBest Regards,\nMehnaz Amjad *PMP,SHRM SCP ,ITILv3*\nPh :+91 9177400155\n\n\n

Hi Priya ,\n\nMy apologies for a delayed response .\nI was held up in a tech conference , hence had no time to check my emails .\nSorry about it\n\nTo your question\n\nCan you share your qualifications ,including a copy of your resume\nI would need to study it to recommend what you can do best as a next career\nmove .\n\nThe best starting option especially in the non tech field is that of\nrecruiting , since you know JAVA and had worked on it for 3 years , you\nwill be a good person to engage in Technical Hiring , these days we need\nrecruiters who not only understand the business but also the technology .\n\nYou can take up technical hiring on a freelance basis , or flexi basis\n\nCheck this links\n\nhttp://www.talentbazaar.com/applyfreelancerecruiterjob\n\nhttps://www.naukri.com/freelancerecruitmentjobs\n\nhttps://www.upwork.com/o/jobs/browse/skill/recruiting/\n\nhttps://www.linkedin.com/jobs/freelancerecruiterjobs/?country=in\n\nHope this helps , also do send me your profile for a better understanding\n\n\n\n\n\nBest Regards,\nMehnaz Amjad *PMP,SHRM SCP ,ITILv3*\nPh :+91 9177400155\n\n\n

Hi Aureen Gomes ,\n\nHope my email finds you in best of all things .\n\nWith what you had described , you seems to have experience at Content\nmanagement .\n\nWork from home basically are jobs which can be done remotely ,with\nassistance from high speed internet connectivity and a personal computer\n\nIn work from home there are no high paying jobs , some of the common area\nwhere work from home is done\n\n1.Recruitment this involves ,sourcing from various job portals, followed\nby screening and offer release\n2.Content writers people who could write and contribute on blogs , or\nsocial media\n3.Online Tutions where teacher assist students with writing research work\n, project assignments etc\n4.Virtual Assistant doing administrative work for someone like a Personal\nassistant\n5. HR projects which can be done virtually and involve lot of research\nand presentations\n\nSince you are a content writer , you do have many options to choose from\nHowever , bear in mind that Work from home is still an evolving phase in\nIndia , hence , you may not really end up being very well paid as compared\nto the Western world which is now into a mature stage of work from home\n\nThe pay will neither be high or low , but will be moderate depending upon\nhow much you are willing to take and work\nand this applies to all the sectors .\n\nThe focus of work from home is more to provide flexibility to those who\ncannot come to office and work , but it does not offer high pay .\n\nSome of the websites you could check for Content writers to work from home\nare as follows :\n\nhttps://www.naukri.com/homebasedcontentwritingjobs\n\nhttps://www.naukri.com/parttimecontentwritingjobs\n\nhttp://worknhire.com/WorkProjects/jobs/q_ContentWriting\n\nhttp://www.quikr.com/jobs/freelancecontentwritingworkfromhome+zwqxj2726005330\n\nHope this helps and work for you .\n\n\n\nBest Regards,\nMehnaz Amjad *PMP,SHRM SCP ,ITILv3*\nPh :+91 9177400155\n\n\n

Hello Mehnaz,\\nI am Sujitha. I am a PhD student from Madurai. I recently got to know about Corporate Training in English from a friend of mine. I started to see this as a skill which I would like to get trained in. I am from the life Sciences (more specifically Microbiology). I am a mother to a one year old daughter. I am in Madurai in a joint family set up. It would be more preferable if you could suggest some thing in and Chennai. \\n\\nThank you

Hi Mehnaz,\nI have been working as a freelance Business Development Specialist for the last two years and also completed a certification from a Reputed International University. I am looking out for a full time job while yet taking up Freelance Projects. My question here is that in spite of mentioning to every single HR that I am now paid on an hourly basis, why do they are still consider my previous drawn salary that was about two years ago. My current remuneration per hour is much higher compared to the last CTC. Why do HR's still stick with the CTC with the previous company as my current salary. Do the HR's today understand that a candidate can take up freelance and be paid more that previous salary. Do HRs know how to consider the freelance professionals remuneration and devise something based on that? How do I handle such a situation? what should I present here and how? How do we negotiate our salary for taking up a job further?\n\n
