Hi! I am Statistics graduate and have been preparing for Civil Services since then but could not make it to the final list. I want to do something where I can apply my civil services preparation knowledge along with statistics. Something like Social Entrepreneurship. Can you please guide me how should I proceed.

Hi Poonam, If you plan to give the exam another shot and meanwhile want to make use of your knowledge then it makes sense to start interning at an NGO that works in a field of your interest. Alternatively, if this is the field you want to get into as a social entrepreneur, best would be to join a start up or the analytics department of an MNC. You will be able to get to know about orgs at http://www.devnetjobsindia.org/. Hope this helps.

Hi Aditi. I've been quite unfulfilled and frustrated at my job of late. I have been doing rigorous soul searching to discover that one unique talent of mine through which I can change as many lives as possible for the good and make a difference in the world. However, I have not been able to come to a substantial standpoint in the quest. Please help me on how to proceed
16 Aug 2016, 07:51am
Hi Manvi, Firstly, it is great that you are trying to dig deeper and search for a true purpose that you can contribute to and feel more satisfied working at. It isnt easy to find the sweet-spot between your passions, your ability and what people are ready to pay for. There are a lot of companies working at helping individuals figure out their calling. You could do a career aptitude test (like the RAISEC), a personality test (like MBTI,Hogan) to know your true motivations, values etc. apart from a simple swot analysis of yourself and homing onto what you can start pursuing seriously and make a difference with. It would be best to meet a career counsellor for this. All the best

Hi mam I want some advice regarding my sister’s career, she is confused about where to work she is graduated from bachelors of technology and she worked for 1 year in some small scale industry and she got some personal problems from the people over there now she is not ready to work in any company she is very scared of things, so what she should prefer for. She wants her own work but she is not clear with what she want, what she can do, so please suggest me some solution to this problem. Thank you sirisha.
08 Aug 2016, 09:45am
Hi Sirisha, Assuming your sister is interested in taking her career forward, my suggestion is that she sits down with a cool mind and jots down her own strengths, possible avenues of interest and profile match, areas of improvement, plan of action. This exercise is to be done and then discussed out with an experienced mentor who can guide her through the journey. She needs a clarity of her own purpose to be spelt out before deciding her next steps.

Hi Aanchal, Mass Comm is a very diverse field. You would need to be specific about what part of the field interests you more. It would be better if you refine your query. Reading, Writing and presenting are essential aspects of mass comm so you could polish these skills to start with. If you haven't worked before it would be best to intern voluntarily to gain experience first. Get your profile out there on job sites, LinkedIn and keep talking to people. Good luck.

Hi Aditi, I have an experience of more than 6years in Graphic/web designing. I quit my job in 2011 and started my own business as a freelancer. But due to short of time and knowledge I am unable to bring leads/client. As marketing is a new chapter for me. Kindly suggest what should I do to bring my business to the top. Regards Simran

Hi Simran, It's great you started out on your own, it takes guts , so do pat your back ! Marketing is an essential part of a career for any individual. You would need to be clear on your product, the value it adds and the price you demand, identify the target group that has a need of your product and go after them. Sounds easy but requires immense preperation from your end in terms of the value you are able to add to your customers. Discipline and consistency is key. You have to set realistic goals and review them at regular intervals so that you take small but steady steps towards success. Let me know if you would like to discuss this further . Write to me at aditisheoran@gmail.com. Good luck.

Hi Aditi, I have an experience of more than 5 years in retail branch banking. I quit my job in HDFC bank in 2011 when my daughter was born. Now when I am trying to restart my career recruiters are rejecting my cv because of the long break. Can you let me know of any courses which can help me update my banking knowledge and will help me restart my career. Thanks and regards Divya

Hi Divya, Thanks for writing in. Its a great step that you have decided to restart your career. I am not a subject matter expert in Finance hence wont be able to be specific but I think it would be best to ask your former colleagues, MBA peers or Finance recruiters about banking specific certifications that are hot in the market. You could also reach out to your previous employers to take you in on a contractual basis to start with. Check out any finance specific jobs on the Sheroes list itself. You could also become part of forums like headstart etc which have startups employ professionals from across streams. Hope this helps. All the best!

Hi Anu, It's good that you have decided your own pace for the time being. You could explore part time options with your previous employers or other folks in your network. Keep your profile updated on linkedin and keep connecting and networking well. You could also be part of start up events where there are recruiting sessions (check out headstart in your city). Patch on with NGOs that are willing to hire professionals part time. Similarly check out sheores jobs, flexingit, workingmother, indeed, flexjobs & so on. Wish you all the very best!!

Liji asked

Hi, I am a Computer Engineer and took up a career in Customer Service instead, as I was passionate about talking to people and helping solve their problems. I have now 9 years of work experience and have managed/coached/trained teams to achieve excellence in customer service. I had to take a career break, of 4 years, from regular office jobs and now face a dilemma; I am ready to join the regular office workforce however I see that I am no longer confident/comfortable in job activities that involve speaking to a large audience, making presentations, taking training session for a crowd etc. These are things that used to be quite effortless for me in the past. Is this normal? How do I get back my self-confidence and courage to do these roles as I am quite sure I am equipped with good communication skills etc to do the same. What kind of workshops or sessions would you recommend to tackle this situation? Thanks in advance.
14 Jul 2016, 05:52am
Hi Liji, What you are facing is but natural. Don't worry about it. Since there has been a bit of a break, you would need to give yourself some time to get back into the groove full throttle. Meanwhile, you could gain back your confidence by shadowing trainings, taking smaller sessions or co facilitating, being part of a toastmasters club where you continuously hone your presentation skills in an informal environment, attend a public speaking or image consulting course or better, an acting course that puts off inhibitions, if any. A steady improvement on a regular basis will take you much further in the long run than the pressure of competing with your best self in one shot. Look ahead and march on!

Hi Aditi, I was working as a Quality Auditor cum trainer in Dell Technical Support for 8+ years. After all these years, I realized that my strengths lied in training and content development. Though I have not done any certifications in it but I have a passion for T&D. I don't know how to find right opportunities given that I cannot do night shifts due to my motherly commitments. Please help me find a way. I am looking for a fruitful career in work from home. Regards, Sonia Chauhan Bhanot
29 Jun 2016, 09:19am
Hi Sonia, It's a great place to be in if you are able to pin point your passion clearly. Now the next steps are to- validate the passion by experience, polish your skills and gain knowledge in the area, network with more people in the field. But before one even does that, I would like to point out that the best content developers usually also have an exposure to training delivery. This means if you start out in L&D you may need to be open to forgo work from home till such time that you get some on ground delivery experience. Freelancing is one such flexible option but it would require discipline from your end in terms of marketing yourself well to get business, pushing yourself to reach out to training firms, get selected and run their programmes at corporates. I have myself done this mode of work for about 2 years and it was a tremendous learning experience that added to my profile greatly. Going back to the 3 steps: As a quality auditor and trainer you would have got a view into training, but the field is way too vast. If behavioural L&D is your interest then it would be important to get certified in any of the behavioural methodologies or psychometrics (MBTI, NLP, ISABS etc..there are many) to gain understanding, expand network and give your profile an edge. Given your interest in content development, an Instructional design & Facilitation skills programme would help focus your profile better. Reading books related to L& D as well as business will also help greatly in relating concepts with real business problems and solutions. Finally, with anyone and everyone you know in this field, its good to begin networking and making your profile reach the right places, start with people you know on linkedin, people in some of the top training firms, on training groups etc. Wish you all the very best!

Hi Aditi, I am Prachi and I am an MBA Graduate. I have done my specialization in finance but would now like to make a career move to more people oriented roles such as HR or teaching. Since I have already have a bit of theoretical knowledge about the HR Domain due to my MBA Course but I am still finding it difficult to get a job in HR since my specialization is in Finance. Also I have enrolled myself for a Masters in Psychology from IGNOU. I need to take up a job immediately, it can even be a part time teaching job. Can you guide me
28 Jun 2016, 11:42am
Hi Prachi, I hear 3 fields- Finance, HR, Teaching. First things first, its important for you to be unwaveringly crystal clear on whether you want to shift from Finance to HR or to teaching and why. Assuming that is done at your end, i see you having an interest in HR and in Education. In simple terms the edu branch of HR is L&D the focus of which is to help improve business performance by improvement in technical/ process knowledge or behaviour change. The other field you spoke about is Teaching which could be at the Kindergarden level for which you would need to clear the NTT, school level for which the BED (IGNOU also offers it I guess) would work or at the undergraduate level for which NET is required. The MA Psychology course at IGNOU has a couple of course options, one bifurcates into organizational psychology (related to L&D in Companies, and would have been a part of your MBA), one is into the clinical and counselling side (can be a plus at schools etc.) So you have to basically decide if HR is your interest then the MA Psychology in OB would be a plus but is not a must, you could look at HR specializations at some of the B schools or SHRM etc. You could alternatively try to move first into Compensation & Benefits where a finance background will help and then gradually explore other areas in HR. If your interest is teaching then you can do an MA in the field you want to teach in along with the teaching qualification. You can start with teachforindia meanwhile, to gain experience.

17 Jun 2016, 07:59am
Hi Monika, Firstly, its great that you want to expand your horizons at the early stages of your career. This mind-set will surely help you diversify your skillset and be a more versatile leader at a later stage. While Digital Marketing is a booming field these days, to make the switch smoother and more fruitful to you in terms of level, package etc, it would be a good idea to pick up some formal education in this area. There are a lot of courses online on sites like simplilearn, corusera, edx (some are free and some affordable) which you can pursue. On a deeper level, it would be a great idea to really sit down and put the reasons, pros and cons of your career shift from pen to paper. This will make the move more solid and unwavering, so that you don't lose out precious time and energy while you explore a new frontier. You surely want to build upon the last 5 years too than start totally from scratch. Would be happy to help if further clarity is required. All the best! Aditi
