The empowered women in today’s times exemplify indomitable wo(w)men. Despite having different challenges to face in the professional sphere compared to men, some women have broken stereotypes to come out as brighter leaders.

Learning from the journeys of many inspiring women, here are five traits that are the key to their success as leaders:

Be yourself

It’s very important to be your authentic self. Women usually feel the pressure to adjust. Learn to ignore the voice that asks you to compromise. Know what your worth is and how your skill set and intellect make you stand out.

If you don’t know the answer, trust your instincts

Whoever said “leaders know all the answers” was wrong. It’s natural to not know the answers to every question. Leaders often go with their gut. Women, if empowered with the confidence to take decisions, can be exemplary leaders. According to a study by Harvard Business School, women leaders’ maturity, confidence and encouraging attitude influence their people to work better.

Rebel against fear

Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. Learn to risk the present to reach the potential of the future.

Be a good listener

Absorb as much information as you can to improve your ideas. This will help you reach the best decision for everyone. According to Katie Rae, managing director of TechStars, “When it’s a smaller team, you can rapidly make changes because you are all sitting in the same room together, looking at each other. As the team gets bigger, you have to be very careful of the advice you give. Make sure you listen more in order to have a balanced opinion.”

Ask questions

Ask questions. Make your presence felt. Fellow employees should feel your passion to do what’s best for them. According to Paula Stephenson, director of marketing at Smoke’s Poutinerie; “I have noticed that if you act as if there’s equality in the workplace, then there will be.” If something doesn’t seem fair, ask questions so you can better understand how to address the issue.
