Have you ever heard someone say this to you before, “I work from home as an instructional designer.”

Many may not have heard of this job before and most are not sure if an instructional designer designs or writes as a technical writer. What does an instructional designer do and how can you do this from home?

Can you become an ID?

Symbiosis and SNDT are two of the colleges that offer courses in Instructional Design. Apart from these you can approach companies that offer ID training or find online coursesMost IDs can first work with an e-learning company and learn on the job too. 

To consider a career in this field, you need to have strong writing skills. You also need to be analytical as well as be creative. You need to be comfortable with working with computers and be open to learning new software.  

How is working-from-home possible?

You will have to get experience in an e-learning company before you can venture out as a freelancer working from home.  There are several companies who offer flexi-timings and allow the option of working some days from home.

Try to reach out to companies who need regular content. Fix a schedule. If the company is based in your city (or elsewhere) set up work terms and timelines and ensure you deliver the content on time. Once companies are assured of your capabilities it is easier to negotiate work-from-home terms, should you desire to pursue this as a career from home. 

What are the work hours and pay?

As a freelancer your work hours are determined by the project you are working in. If the project has tight deadlines then, you may be putting in 8 or more hours a day. However, you can mention how many hours you can work for before you take up the project.

The pay scale for a freelancer, again, will depend on your project. You can get paid anywhere between Rs 25,000 to Rs 60,000 for a project. You can also work from home as a permanent employee with an e-learning company.
