Hi Sunandini, may I say that you're the only Mentor who's into UX that I've found here so I'm banking big time on your support. Ok, so I had a full-time Visual Design/Animation career till 2011 and since then I've been freelancing in the same, until now. Now I'm very intrigued by the advent of UX design in recent times and have been learning it during my free time. I'm in my mid 30's now and aspire to join a full-time UX career. But no matter how many online certifications I do, or showcase my own UX projects in my portfolio, or show a dire keenness to work in the said field: I've been facing rejection in job interviews owing to my lack of professional experience. That and also no matter how much I prepare myself there's always going to be a gap in how I work and industry standards. That doesn't help either. So here I'm, itching to gain an entry into the UX domain and in need for some desperate guidance as to how. I have put together a fairly decent portfolio which is at www.geetikajohnson.com, the last section 'About Me' also has my Resume. Can I please request you to give it some time and tell me what more can I do, in order to gain access in the UX domain I'm pretty confident once I begin I can do very well. I'm very intrigued by the 'Returnee Programs' too that enable a smooth transition between career phases but unfortunately I havent come across any UX openings in there yet. Actually UX everything across all such forums, namely: Mentors, Job searches/Vacant positions, Courses, Returnee programs are pretty much negligible.\\nPlease throw some light here, I'll be looking forward to it. And many many thanks in advance, as you can tell, I'm pretty desperate :) \\n

Hi Venus, It's great that you are studying for your medical entrance exams. If you want to learn coding as well, there are lots of options available onlin. You can look at Udacity, Coursera and Khan Academy. You can do this with a nominal fee on any of these sites. You need to decide whether you want to do front end coding, or "what you see" - that means HTML, CSS & Javascript. If you want to learn other kinds, Python and C would be useful. Since yo don't have previous knowledge, I would recommend starting with HTML. After that you can list yourself on websites like Fiverr to earn money doing small coding jobs. Hope this helps.

Hi, my job involves both user interface designer for mobile and a content strategist. So I need to focus on both areas. As my priority lies in content strategy, please suggest me how to keep myself update and progress in the career. Are these both domain interrelated, I felt it is, what is your suggestion?

Aruna, these are both big areas if you really want to specialize in either. Depends on how deep do you want to go in each. Are you a consultant or part of an inhouse team? What level of experience are you bringing to both? Try to set some realistic expectations for yourself if you have to do both.

Hi, I am a student of Design pursuing my bachelors at Design Discipline, IIITDM, Jabalpur. I like working for and with the people of rural India. I am good at empathising with people and understanding their needs & I follow the design thinking approach. I am interested in further studying design strategy for my masters. Could you guide me to organisations that do similar work with whom I could take up projects with as an intern or volunteer...Thank you. ^_^

Meru, that's a wonderful decision. You might want to get in touch with Samoolam, which is founded by an ex-NIDian Usha Prajapati. http://www.samoolam.org/ Let me know if you need her contact details.

Hi Pallavi, why don't you start doing some courses that would help you? For example, around project management, or learn programming? You can do a short term online course at Udacity, Khan Academy or Coursera.

Hi Sunandini,\nI was working with a MNC in software testing and had to resign to take care of small kids.completed my post graduation during this period.i want ro get back to work preferably with work from job.please help in finding ways through sheroes.
26 Apr 2017, 07:55pm
Hi Geeta, Software testing can be a possible option to work from home. However in the beginning you may need to go in to your workplace a few times to meet your team and manager. How many years of experience do you have? It's usually easier to get opportunities if you are around the 3-4 years experience range, but if you had more, then employers would expect you to have project management or leadership skills or training. That is something you can do if you don't have already. This shows that you are proactive about your career on your CV. \nAlso have you checked the Sheroes job portal https://sheroes.in/jobs/search/skill/location/employment-type/work-from-home/career-level/company/page:1\nLet me know and we can talk further.\n

Hello Sunandini,\\n\\nI'm currently pursuing a course in user experience design online. I would like to get some career advice at this point.I'm not sure how soon i can start working and what is a good way to get my foot in the door with work? How would you describe your experience? Would be great to get some pointers as .\\n\\nBest,\\nE\\n\\n

Hi Elitra,\nThe best way to get practical experience on your own, and apply the\nconcepts you have learnt, is to take the apps and websites you use and see\nif you can come up with a better redesign. The first step would be to do an\nexperience review, what's working and what's not. Investigate further, read\nreviews, etc about it, and then try to redesign it. I can probably review\nyour work if you need someone to do that and give you feedback.\nHope this helps.\nSoo\n\n\n

Hi, \\n I am an mca graduate, and through placement i joined with hcl technologies, i took a break after my maternity leave... Now am trying to start my work again.. The domain in which i was trained in hcl, was very less and i was used as a shadow resource for that project only for 3 months.. Now i feel confused like what skillset should i give... Since i am experienced if i give new skill they expect project experience and considering that only.. How can i get into a good job.. Thanks for hearing me... Hope you would help me..

Hi Preethi,\nThe best thing to do after a break is to (a) take some training in an area\nthat will be of use in multiple industries. Have a practical approach and\nmap your interests with the top skills someone with your experience would\nbe expected to have Project Management is a pretty universal skill for\nexample. (b) Reconnect with older colleagues to see in which areas they\nhave specialized in after working in the niche domain. Let me know if that\nworks out.\n\n\n
