Hi Sonali , I have worked in customer service industry for almost 12 years. 6 years back, I left my job with a leading bank , where I was working as a branch manager. I took a break , for my daughter who was very young. i am located in Pune. From past 6 months I have stepped into a new line of work. I am setting up my own business of hand bags , shopping bags , tote bags , clutches , purses etc. Currently i am working from home. In couple of exhibitions, i had booked a stall, where response was favourable. I am looking for a way forward. There are lots of online shopping websites available. I have done this on a very small scale. I have plans to expand it. But I feel I am going in a bit hapazard manner,. As I understand , I need to give a brand name, plus some nice pics of my handbags among other things. Request you to pls guide.\\n\\n

Hi sonali, I have to ask something very imp and whch is related to your work field too. I ahve build a tech enabled media platform where we have aggregated all media options available in India so as to enable ease in media buying. After making the product and 8 months preparing supply side, buyer side is not so open to buying media online as they have tie ups as per communication through them. Please suggest, I m incurring cost and I am from law background, got into this and now thinking to stop in losses. Please guide, Please.
15 May 2017, 05:08pm
Hi Sonal,\n\nThe concept sounds interesting to me; however, customer feedback is\nimportant too. Media buying is a lot about media planning initially. And\nfor media planning, organizations prefer to go to media agencies who are\nexperts. What I am saying is that, media planning is a customised,\ntailormade option; and with the tie ups that are becoming the norm today,\nyou may consider:\n1) Incorporating the tie up angle in your platform\n2) Targeting it towards as agencies/media planning and buying\nagencies/media consultants\n3) Getting the media sellers to have a buyin as well.\n\nThese are just suggestions based on the information you have shared. But to\nreally come to a decision, there is a lot left unsaid here.\n\nAll I wish to say is, do not rush into any decision now. Talk to the\ncustomers, explore angles of innovation, talk to ad agencies and media\nsellers and then decide.\n\nAll the best!\n\n

Dear Sonali,\\nI am a seasoned communications professional with 11+ years in writing and editing. Rather, I like to call myself a documenter with an undying passion for narrating stories scattered around. I have worked with publishing, IT and education industry including a few start-ups. During this course, I have written extensively for print and online media. However, I find it strange that as I try to seek creative opportunities with organisations I am met with disappointment. Do you think is it because I do not have a degree in literature or mass communications or my search is not appropriate or is it that last eight years I have worked with IIT Kanpur and a few interesting freelancing projects? What would you recommend?
15 May 2017, 11:12am
Hi Reema,\n\nSince there are different kinds of writing and different domains for which\none can write, there needs to be a good fit between what you bring to the\ntable and what the corporates are looking for. Maybe there is a gap there.\nWriting styles differ too. Example, if a company is looking for a more\npoetic style for their requirement, and you have a business style, the fit\nis not perfect. Or vice versa. You may also like to see how well and aptly\nyou are packaging your skills and craft. As a starting point, write down\nthese things as a plan for your personal brand.\n1. What are you best at? 2. Who is your target audience? Who are you\nwriting for? Who do you want to write for? 3 What do you want to write \nwhat kind of writing do you want to be engaged in? 4 How do you stand apart\nfrom your competitors who are they? 5 What are your ideal clients\nexpecting in your domain 6 Are your priced right? Are you packaged right?\n\nHope this helps. All the best!\nSonali\n\n

12 May 2017, 12:26am
Dear Hema,\n\nWriting is always a great option and allows you to work from home as well,\nshould you choose so.\n\nYou need to explore various kinds of writing and then decide what you love\nthe best. Then pursue the same. In an ad agency, you get to work on\ndifferent kinds of writing brochures, TV commercials, radio spots, print\nads plus content on digital like blogs, website writing etc. You may join\nan agency to see what you like the best. Or, you could freelance and try\ndifferent things to find out your calling.\n\nYou can also get into creating educational content and there are many such\ncontent opportunities today. 16 Apr 2017, 11:24pm
Hi Deepali,\n\nBefore you can come up with ideas, you will need to research and find a few\nthings:\n1) What is your market? Target audience Who is your customer?\n(Man/woman/staying where? (location) and similar\n2. Who is your competition? (Other insurance agents?) How many are they?\n3. Why should the customer buy from you?\n4. What is your customer looking for?\n5. What is it that 'sold' the policies you have sold so far What were the\nfactors that enabled the sale?\n\nOnce you do this exercise, you will have a few ideas of how you should\n'pitch' or 'sell' to your customers. It is very important to understand what\nthe customer is really looking for and see if you can fill and fulfill that\nneed of the customer.\n\nAll the best! let me know if you need anything else.\n\nBest, Sonali Brahma\n\n\n\n

14 Apr 2017, 10:46am
Hi Akshita,\n\nLet me focus on your interest in 'radio'. A few questions you may like to\nanswer before we move to the course suggestions. Why do you want to look at\na career in radio? Have you spoken to people who work in the radio industry\nand tried to understand roles? Content development is most certainly a role\nin 'radio'. And if you wish to go there, then a Mass Comm degree or a\nsimilar degree works. Typically, people who work in content in 'radio' and\nsome of who I know have done a full degree course in\nCommunication/Advertising/Mass Comm. So you will be up against them, just\nto give you a heads up. However, with your experience in content, a diploma\nmay be good too. Here's something for you to study.\nhttp://www.xaviercomm.org/diplomacourses/default.htm\n\nOther than Xaviers, there will be other colleges too who offer such diploma\ncourses.\n\nI would suggest you do your research first about the kind of roles and the\nsalary etc. in the 'radio' industry talk to a lot of people who are\nexperienced in radio. If this still interests you, go for research about\nthe several courses available in your location or area of preference and go\nfor it.\n\nYou may also look for a short project/internship with a radio channel to\nunderstand how things work there and if they pique your interest and\ncreativity. This may be unpaid, but still gives you a chance to check\nthings out before you jump.\n\nAll the best! Hope I have answered your question.\n\n

15 Mar 2017, 03:40pm
Hi Rinaa, You have diverse interests, qualifications and work experience. These can help you find the bestcareerfit without 'putting all your eggs in one basket' so to speak. Coming back to the bottom line, there are ample work opportunities for a work from home career you can find a lot in content writing to match your specific interests, you can become a teacher/professor (Visiting Faculty) for the new subjects you are studying and you can also have your own venture into content or HR or your new interests. The best way to do this is to identify what makes you really really happy, then what gives you the best revenue and then find your niche. Till you find this, you can still keep busy by working on writing projects and teaching assignments. Many summer camps keep looking for teachers for the summer months in various creative fields, you can explore those. Also keep checking www.sheroes.in/jobs every two days. Wish you all the best! But, there are shortcomings too - there are job hoppings, gaps and I have also worked as an entrepreneur/freelancer. Can you guide, where I am stuck? Regards, Leena
14 Mar 2017, 05:11pm
Hi Leena, The good part is you already know the probable speed-breakers in your path. I would still say, that you be patient, keep hunting, look for opportunities (while you are looking for jobs) - I mean look for projects and freelancing. If you are comfortable with teaching, take a few sessions - there are enough media colleges around. Use this time to work on your own profile ( a presentation), be active on job /professional networking sites and engage in active and effective networking even offline. People are posting jobs and openings even on their social pages - keep looking for them, connect with them. Keep checking www.sheroes.in/jobs every two days. IT companies - even when they are looking for media professionals, consider full time experience as experience. Nonetheless, I am sure that there is a job that is out there waiting for you. Do ensure that you are fully geared (with reskilling) and other suggestions as above to take on the job opportunities that are currently not so obvious to you. All the best! Sonali

Hi Sonali, I am a User Experience designer. While working on several projects, I have realised that story telling plays a important role in interaction too. Even a simple registration form needs to be designed well and the copy should be encouraging enough for the user to register. I want to learn more about this field as academically i am a designer. What books can i read or how can i go about it.
10 Mar 2017, 10:27am
Hi Eshani, Story telling is a form of copywriting, I would say. Because different stories touch different people. The type, style, form and writing of each story can be different. Copywriting is an art and science, both. You need to understand 'Who' you are writing for; What you are writing about; Where and when is the reader going to read it? and What do you want him to feel/do after he has read it. Once you answer these questions, you will write stories that connect with your audience. You should write as if you are conversing with the reader and not as if you are selling, even if that is the long term intention. Some books are 'The Copy Book' a big, thick, hard bound book, available online. This will tell you about writing for advertising. Amazing book. There are many others on Storytelling, you will have to go through a few to understand the technique and then write your own way. There are many free resources online as well. Courses on Coursera and Udemy. Do check them out. Hope I have answered your question. If not, feel free to ask. Best, Sonali

Hi Usha, That's good, solid experience. Since you have done the entire gamut in advertising from design, copy to servicing and planning your path to corporate communication should be pretty smooth. Your experience in education may not be considered and so also the gap in ' hard core advertising' experience. You haven't written about your educational qualifications here, so I wouldn't be able to comment on that. I think you should start looking for corporate communication jobs and start applying. Hi Tanya, I think at a certain point in time, happiness takes precedence over pure corporate success. If English is what makes you happy, go for it. Content writing is something that gets better with practice and if you are beginning now, you need to align your expectations to a beginner's level and be prepared to go through the grind. Once you prove you are good at it, you will grow fast and get to the salary you are used to. Usually, companies ask for a trial and if that goes well, you can get a foot in the door in your new found love- content. At a mid level, good content writers are known to draw the kind of salary you have mentioned which means 5 plus years of experience in a content role. I hope I have answered your query. Always remember that confidence, an open mind and perseverance go a long way in helping you make your dreams come true. All the best! Sonali

Hello, my name is Manu Agarwal. I have moved from Hyderabad to jamshedpur (Jharkhand) after marriage. I have 5 years of work experience in an online gaming company (IVY comptech which is a subsidiary of Bwin.Party digital entertainment Inc). I worked in risk operations department where i had to develop customer base, evaluate online transactions, recognize frauds, manage customer database, Detect and prevent fraudulent activities including use of Third party applications, Money Laundering, Financial fraud, Account Hacking etc. Now I live in a city that has few job opportunities, can you please suggest me that what profile I can pick depending on my past work experience. Online gaming is a niche industry in India, especially in jamshedpur I see no such options. Please suggest how can I manage my career now as its a big change for me. Hi Manu, Moving to a new city is a major change. After reading your message, I must say that you gave detailed your query quite well. Here's what you could begin with: 1. Identify skill sets you have other than the ones you mentioned above. 2. Check for opportunities that match these new-found skill sets. You could also learn a new skill, which can open up opportunities in that area. 3. Sheroes also has a plethora of remote and work from home jobs. You could identify the ones that fit your profile or interest area. 4. Remote or virtual working is an arrangement that many companies do go for these days. Look for such opportunities in the industry you have worked in earlier. It usually takes some time to settle in, in a new city. This can make you uncomfortable, but I am sure that in due course and with consistent efforts, you will find a good job. Or who knows, you will find an idea in which you could launch your own business or consultancy. Wish you the very best. And keep us updated as you find your new purpose. Best, Sonali

03 Jun 2016, 08:57pm
Hi Deeba, You will first have to define what 'a perfect job' is to you. Because, 'perfect' means different things to different people. Once you define that, it will be easier for you to spot the opportunities and shortlist the ones that fit your 'basket of perfect'. On a more generic level, in the field that you are in, the perfect job could be the one that offers you a role that is in sync with your experience, the market price for that experience and an opportunity to learn new things in your chosen field. As i always say, 'The perfect job is the sweet spot between happiness and success.' All the best! Sonali

Hi Sonali...I'm Sonia, 37. I've been in and out of teaching for ten years now. Basically an English teacher, I've taught classes 6-12. While I enjoy teaching most, I wish to ask about options in the field of creative writing. I do like to pen my thoughts. I have a personal blog for friends called Just Like That by my maiden name Sonia Dogra. Is there any place where I can put my thoughts to words...basically about life in general...stories at times. It'll be great if you can let me know of options...thanks.
02 Jun 2016, 05:33am
Hi Sonia, It's wonderful to know that you enjoy teaching as well as writing. The best part is you already have a blog. At Sheroes too, we have an amazing spread for writers. You can be a Sheroes blogger. Check this and register here. https://sheroes.in/sheroes-bloggers-network. You can also register on blogadda.com, which is another popular blogging network. Once you register here, you can actually write on a number of things, which are in sync with what you wish to write about. Sonia, there is really so much a writer can do - sky is the limit. :) Why, you may publish your own book, going forward. All you need to do is begin! Keep teaching, keep writing! Best, Sonali

Hi Sonali, I want to restart my career as a creative writer. I have worked as a Team leader in a reputed BPO for 8 years. Took a break almost 5 years back. I like to express myself by writing. Will it be a good idea to join a course that can help me to learn various techniques and take creative writing as a career opportunity? Thank you
30 May 2016, 02:01pm
Hi Gurpreet, Investing in education and knowledge is always a good idea to learn new skills or to hone existing skills. A course in the field you wish to take up is a good move as it will also help you stay abreast of the latest techniques and tools in creative writing. At the core, however, writing is inherent and comes naturally. A certificate course could also help you make your resume/portfolio look better. At the same time, if you could perhaps work on writing assignments, you would be able to put theory to practice and learn on-the-job. Best always, Sonali

Inderpreet asked

Good Morning Sonali I am Inderpreet .from Pune. I have done graduation in fine arts. I have two small kids. I was planning to start a new venture of taking orders for hand made paintings like oil, acrylics, glass or knife paintings from companies online. Please suggest me how to go about it. I can upload few samples of my work. Thanks you
15 May 2016, 05:57am
Hi Inderpreet, Great to e-connect with you. You have a great thought to begin taking orders for your art work. If you have a portfolio, i suggest you first launch a simple Facebook Business Page. Here, you can showcase your fine work. You will need to boost the page or your posts so as to reach a large audience, in short you will need to 'market' your work and invest some money. Facebook is very user friendly and they recommend investing a small amount initially, so you need not get worried there. Be sure you are present on every relevant group on FB for entrepreneurs, women entrepreneurs and similar. There are many such groups. Before you show your work, make sure you do not give away high-res images and be sure to watermark your images with your brand name or your own name (which is a personal brand) and then put them up. Another good channel is instagram; since it is a highly visual medium, you can put up your posts here too. You will need to use the right hashtags for maximum reach and attention. You will learn on the go, if you aren't already there. You can take orders from the FB page and get your advance payments through online transfer. Once you are comfortable with this format, you can go for online dealings through a website and a payment gateway. You have said you want to sell to companies; please do check why companies would buy from you, what is the reason for them to be wanting these works of art from you - are you looking at corporate gifting? Then you will need to find out how much are companies willing to pay for them? To sum up, you need to first work on 'Who exactly is your target customer? What is he willing to pay for this? Who are your competitors? What is your differentiation and what edge do you have over your competition? Why should your customers buy from you? Where can you find them offline and online? Hope i have answered your query to your satisfaction. More when we meet. Do be there at the Pune Community Meet in June. See you there! Regards, Sonali

Hi, I've been writing content for various websites past more than a year and I'm really enjoying my work. Now I've started taking freelancing jobs but i feel I'm underpaid. Can you guide me as to what is the pay for content writing.? And what should i do to go ahead in this field? I do not have a technical expertise in this field but people really like my write-ups. Kindly guide me maam. Thankyou
12 May 2016, 03:50pm
Hi Neha, It's wonderful that you enjoy what you do - write, that is. :) The feeling of underpaid or well paid is subjective. But here's one thumb rule to get your man (woman) hour rate. Find out based on your last salary or the industry's current full time salary for the job that you do. Divide it by 20 days (these are the days you work in a month in a full time job) then divide it by 8 hours. You will get your man hour rate. Then estimate the time you spend on each job. Maybe for example Y hours on writing for a website. Then, multiply the rate with the time in hours. You will get the fees. You charge those fees. Also, allow room for negotiation; a client will always feel good when he/she negotiates. Example, your fees come to 20k. Then you charge 23 k. They will be inclined to charge closest to the lower round figure. Hope this helps. Wish you the best! Have fun, writing!

Hi .It was very inspiring to read your opening remarks on empowerment and positivity. I am a mom of one child ,worked as a marketing professional for 15 years in pharmaceutical advertising market research training as a brand strategist and took a sabbatical .Now I would like to start work again in a related field of content development and creative branding. I would be obliged if you guide to me and lead me towards my goal .Thanks
08 Apr 2016, 05:55pm
Hi Padmaja, Thanks for your kind words. I truly believe in positivity and have seen it work its wonders all around me. It's wonderful to be talking to another brand strategist! There are ample opportunities in brand strategy consulting which will also allow you to work flexi time and devote time to your child. With your background in pharma advertising market research, you have an added advantage, and a good focus, i would say. Not many brand strategists have this kind of expertise. Your inclination to content development and creative branding is also a very good idea, again going by your expertise in pharma advertising. However, this role will require you to wear a creative hat, while your pre sabbatical role was more of a marketing role. If you feel, you have a good grip on creatives and content; writing overall, then go ahead by all means. If you have anything more to ask, feel free. Wish you the very best! Regards, Sonali

Hello Ms. Happy Sonali, It's been a sense of immense pleasure while reading your profile . I wish to have your valuable opinion regarding the career I wish to pursue further. I have experience as an IT HR , but could not continue my job since last year being it was my wedding time. But, now I want to continue it as an IT HR / content writer / personality development trainer / some other Domain where comm skills play a vital role wherein, I can work from home or on part time basis . I would really appreciate your valuable comment . Kind Regards, Sakshi
11 Mar 2016, 10:50pm
Hello Sakshi! Let me begin by congratulating you on your wedding. Heartiest Congratulations! It is but natural that you would now want to start thinking about a work-life balance. So the good news is that, even HR professionals can have an independent practice or work as consultants. IT HR also needs consultants on a project basis as i have heard of, during peak periods. Which means, you may not have to leave HR after all. What i also read, is that you may be interested in content and training. Before you get into these fields, do introspect and check if you are genuinely interested in these fields. Also, check honestly, how good you are in these areas. Example - ask yourself, if you are a good writer. Ask yourself if you are a good trainer. If your answer is yes, you can venture into these areas and do a pilot round. If it works well, great, you are on your way! For opportunities in content writing and training, Sheroes is the place, as you may have seen from our job opportunity notifications. For IT HR flexi opportunities, you can also tap your network along with Sheroes. Be on the lookout. Explore opportunities. Be at it. And you will get the work-life balance you seek. All the best! Hi Sonali, I chose to ask you my question because you are a writer. I am a writer as well and have been working with many websites and companies as a freelance content writer. I have a desire to start my own blog and need your guidance. I have the idea and theme for my blog in mind but I have no clue about where and how to start. I have read through many blogs which gives tips and suggestions on how to start your own blog but still have questions. I also wonder if it is required for me to take up a course on understanding the technology part of the blogging or can I hire or ask someone to do it for me. Also, if I need to hire someone, will it be feasible to do so. My contact number is 9980776688 and my email id ami.kamath@gmail.com. Thanks in advance and waiting for your guidanceā€¦
04 Mar 2016, 01:39pm
Hi Amitha, The key to starting a blog is to just start writing :) It's good that you have the idea in your mind already. But here's a tip. Make a list of topics for say the next three months. Maybe 4 per month, so in sum, 12 topics. These topics should be woven around the theme of your blog. Then you simply start writing, one topic at a time. Keep a goal of say two blogs per week, a manageable goal. Upload one at a time, one per week. As for the design, there are free wordpress blog themes or even blogspot (a Google product). There are also paid wordpress themes (design), so your blog looks slightly more different than your neighbour's blog. You can use them. Most of these give you stats. But to promote a blog, you need to share it on all social media. FB, Twitter, etc. Before you decided whether you want to hire someone, decide why you want to start this blog. What do you want to achieve by having this blog. Once you have your answer, you will know what to do. Amitha, the key here is to Just Do It! All the best! Sonali
