Hi. I have been trying to get back to full time job. I know I will be an asset to any organisation I join. I have a very good professional background and a winners attitude. But finding it very difficult to get the kind of senior position I am looking for.All get stuck at why I took a break. Please advice. Thanks
13 Feb 2017, 01:03pm
Dear Shalini - you have to have a reason for why you took a break. From what you have written it seems that you do not have a cogently articulated reason for a break. It does seem baseless to ask the reason for a break, but that is how people are when they interview people in India - so articulate cogently why you took a break. Also, I am not sure how long you have been away from work - so you may find that the level you "want" is not the level they will offer. Don'e get stuck on a level, get stuck with the job role, what you will learn, what you will contribute. Levels, designations etc are superficial and do not define you

Dear Amrita - it's good that you want to start off on your own. Be sure of your expertise area and the unique value you bring to the venture. That is what will sell. If you do not have expertise in an area, then starting a new venture in it is not advisable. Why not work first on a contract basis with recruitment agencies, develop expertise and contacts, and then branch out on your own?

Hi Rajashree - you have 18+ years of rich work experience in hiring. You would possibly fit into a role that does executive hiring. There is possibly only one or 2 such positions in a company. Hence the opportunities will be very very limited. It would probably be best to look at working independently and providing superior services to your customers and grow that way as a professional.

Your network will help you (specially if you have helped them in the past). Also check out the training organizations that you worked with and see if they have options.

However, you should focus on maxing your interview. Be open, honest, energetic, to the point and you should get it!

Hi Rachna - First, please don't fall for a "money for job" scheme. Consultants should not charge you for finding you a role as companies pay for this service. Do not entertain such calls. Second, if you have been trying for 2 years to find a flexi / work-from-home role and have been unable to, then you do need to introspect on the types of jobs you are looking for (are they doable on flexi time or from home?), do organizations offer these roles as flexi / work-from-home, if not what are the roles that are offered and do you have the skills for these roles, why have you been rejected? 03 Aug 2016, 09:44am
Hi Bhawna - It is so unfortunate that recruiters themselves reject your resume on the flimsy grounds that you have had a break. Here are some suggestions (you have may tried some of them) - Have you looked for roles on Sheroes.in? Have you reached out to all your former colleagues to see if there are entry roles in HR that you can do? Have you built a network that you can call on to help you find a job. Have you searched job boards? Have you looked at jobs posted on LinkedIn? I do not think this has anything to do with acquiring a new certification - you have to go out and look for jobs and apply directly.

Pranali asked

Hi Sangeeta, I'm Pranali, currently a homemaker and mother to a 2-yr old. Prior to my 3 yr break, I have 7.5 yrs of work experience in Banking and IT sector. I wish to engage myself again productively and toggling between two extreme career choices. Would be great if you can guide me to take some decision.. Option 1 (Career in India): My work stint tells me only a select few lucky individuals get a work option to strike the work-home balance. And with absolute no support to look after my kid, working full time in Mumbai is not an option for me. Hence, I'm thinking of opening a pre-school, which has been a nascent dream for long. It would be a project from scratch in terms of resources; industry experience, finances, support assets, etc. Option 2 (Career in US): Both my siblings are settled in US, and having family around is big help physically and emotionally. Work culture there is quite supportive to help you nurture your kids. But exploring work opportunities there can be tricky considering the visa norms and other legalities. How can I go about the same. Both the options require a decent amount of monetary and time investment, which I'm okay with. Firstly, confused which option should I direct my energies towards. and later, what's the best route to venture once I select the option. I hope this query fits the forum and doesn't sound too vague. Thanks for your time. Looking forward to read you back.

Dear Pranali - I am assuming that your 7.5 years of experience prior to your break was in India. I am not sure what roles / function this experience was in other than industry. If your heart is in opening a pre-school, and you have the finances, then go for it! Going overseas and finding a job is far harder than finding a job in India without some qualifications that set you up for the job there (i.e. that you have have got if you have studied and/or interned/worked there.) The choice between the two depends on what you are passionate about and then the constraints that the options bring.

Dear Sangeeta, Am Bhawna , a Management Graduate with specialization in Human Resource and having exposure in the HR sub-functions of Performance management, Compensation Management and Dispersion, Handling associate relations, Induction & Training Co-ordination, Benefit Administration, Payroll Co-ordination and Recruitment. I started looking out actively by 2014 end by to my disappointment nothing worked out so in July 2015 I started working as a freelancer recruiter till the time I get a full time opportunity. But as of today also I haven’t got a single call though have been applying on all major job portals. I was a Star performer in my last organization and am very passionate about HR and loved every bit of my job. I keep myself updated with latest HR trends as well. Need your guidance so that I can restart my career in corporate. Is there a certification or course which would help me in restarting my career. Looking forward for your valuable feedback. Hi Bhawna - As you have been out of the job market for more years than in the job market, you may need to reconcile to restart working at the bottom of the ladder or near bottom. You also need to retrospect on why you have not been able to "recruit" yourself into a job. You may want to have a conversation with someone who can ask you the tough questions. Have you applied to Mahindra Satyam? Go back to a former employer should always be a choice if you have been a great performer and if you left in good taste (and hopefully have been in touch with all these years).

Can you let me know of any courses which can help me update my banking knowledge and will help me restart my career. Thanks and regards Divya

Hi Divya - I think it is ridiculous that recruiters are rejecting your resume because you have a 5 year break! Since you have 5 years of experience in retail banking and that too HDFC which is quite well respected, leverage that. Reach out to your colleagues at HDFC itself, and all other banks with retail businesses - directly. Also look at other options - ITES, Retail, Healthcare.

Hi Doorva - good to know that you want to re-enter the workforce. When you say you prefer work-from-home do you mean that you are OK to work full time in an office, too? So, if you get a dream job, in Digital Communications, and it is a full time work-in-an-office, would you do that? If yes, then I suggest that you look for your dream job. Once you get it, you can ask if there are options to work-from-home. Remember that even tho' there is more acceptance of work-from-home jobs, they are not as common as one would imagine. Hello Mam, greetings! My name is Monika. I am looking for freelancing roles in social media/digital marketing for like more than a year. But I am constantly being rejected by companies, mostly those of from metro cities. In some cases they insulted me with insensitive questions, like "if you want to work, why are you not working?'. It was from a Client Servicing Head of an MNC, headquartered in Mumbai. I am a small town girl, and don't have relevant work opportunities at my place. I even tried with some startups jobs / entrepreneurs directly but they never had time to follow up properly - and worst, in one case a founder kept the entire hiring process one sided; asked me to document solutions that we discussed over phone (plus what else I could do on various points he made in his final brief to me, if I were working for him) and then he will decide whether a role is possible or not, leave alone me getting this job. Why did he say so? Because in his company they don't have job openings specifically, it depends on what a person can bring to the table and a follow up from there to see the possibility of a role and things like that. We had a good discussion on phone and was sure of getting a role with them until he mentioned penning down 'every possible solution' and went overboard with 'also suggest the events we can target to expand the brand reach'. I felt cheated and disappointed in this case, given in the end he will have everything documented and I will still left empty handed. What advice would you suggest me in finding my next job? Should I contact this founder again or just move on? I am constantly updating my skill set, can offer more than social media marketing on a job due to a variety of experiences in my previous roles... still I am unable to crack a good job for myself. Is there anything I am not doing but should be otherwise? Please guide me. Thank you for your time and this opportunity to have your expert help in form of Q&A. Regards! :)
09 Jul 2016, 12:07am
Dear Monika - Finding part-time, freelancing roles is always difficult. You have to sell the value you bring to the table constantly. And of every 10 people you meet, you may get one assignment. So don't be too hard on yourself. It is sad that people ask you "why you are not working". I suggest you create and use a pithy reply. Something like "I am working. Freelancing has given me the opportunity to work in multiple industries and areas. And that is the value that I will bring to you." Mention clearly what skills and knowledge you bring to the table. On the specific case of the founder who asked you to pretty much create & document his digital marketing plan as a part of the recruitment process - this is an unfortunate reality. Learn how much you are willing to do as a part of the interview process and at what point you will tell the interviewer that addition information / plans / strategies / documentation etc is a part of the assignment / role and that what you have shared should give them an idea of your capabilities. You must call up and follow up with this founder.

Hi Sambhavi - sometimes it can be hard to find a job, specially of you have done courses that are not well understood by people in the industry or are from institutes that are not commonly known. Also, doing a temporary role for 3 years should not become the reason for not being able to get a job now. Questions that you need to ask yourself are : 1. Are you clearly articulating why you did a teaching role? Why it was temporary? 2. Are you clear about the job you want? Can you clearly state why you have the skills and the knowledge for that role? 3. Have you researched the companies who will recruit someone with your background? Have you sent them your resume? 4. Write/ Can write articles about the same. Trying to find out ways in which processes could be refined or made to deliver better results. Curious, eager to learn new things, coming up with new ideas, take initiative. Talking to new people. Believe in using corrective Feedback systems. Areas of improvement: Unable to stick to one idea, new ideas just keep popping up, unable to convert them into sustainable, long term, full blown project/s.  Interests: Bringing awareness or change in Early years education and development, the way children are dealt with from both education and behavior points of view. Hi Megha - having worked for 7 years in BPO / KPO industry should hold you in good stead. You should be able to go back to your prior organization and tell them that you are ready to work again (after a long break). And that you are looking for flexible options. In the six year break that you have had, have you built new skills? Hope you have kept yourself updated with the changes in the industry so that you are current with what is happening in the workplace. Reach out to all your former colleagues to see if there are roles in their current organizations that they can recommend you for. btw - most of the strengths you have listed above need to be re-articulated. Hi Trapti - From your question it seems to me that you have just graduated. I can't make out why you are looking at only work-from-home jobs. It is always good to have 5-10 years under your belt of regular work-at-an-office job. It helps you build skills and relationships that will help you get a work-from-home job. I am unaware of your area of study in your B.Tech and where you graduated. Also, what kind of jobs you want to do as your start off your career. But suggest you try one or more of the following suggestions: 1. Meet with a career counsellor at your college or location to discuss the skills you have, your interests, your qualifications, and the potential jobs that would suit you. 2. Ensure your resume highlights your skills, interests and achievements. And that it states clearly the kind of work-from-home job you are looking for. Remember - be focussed and flexible 3. If you can suggest me some opportunities that can help to start over again would be helpfull. Thanks.

Dear Poonam - I understand the wish to work from home. However, don't work-from-home in your "spare time"! Work needs to be treated with the same attention and respect as you do home and family. Working from home takes far more discipline, focus, attention, networking, and self-motivation than what is needed when you go into an office. So work because you want to work and are ready to allocate time on a daily basis for this (and know that sometime household chores will take a back seat). If you are clear about this, then you can: 1. Check with your earlier employer/s if they have work-from-home roles that will utilize your current skills. 2. Search for work-from-home jobs on our Sheroes.in network. 3. Reach out to your network of people and tell them about your commitment to work and working from home Give yourself a time limit for this. If you can't find anything, then volunteer your time to causes that you care about. Or acquire more marketable skills.

Thank you mam.Yes mam anytime they will re hire me anytime even after 6 months also because of my skills ..still i am in notice period actually there is no work from home in my company.Thats y resigned from my position. How about freelancing work

Hi Divya - as you are looking for work-from-home options, check out the jobs posted on Sheroes. Also do a detailed search on the internet. Based on my limited knowledge of IBM Mainframes, I believe that these kinds of jobs would be limited. If you don't find anything, look at ways to improve your skills - branch out into newer areas so that you are not in too niche a space. All the best

Hi Maam, I have 6 years of experience in IBM mainframes.Becuse of dependency on my new born baby i have resigened from my current position. Can you please guide me is there any company that provide work from home or is there any possibility to work like a freelancer on mainframes.
13 Jun 2016, 12:12pm
Hi Divya - thank you for writing to me. There are many women like you who decide to take a career break after having a baby. You have not mentioned how long your break is, but I am assuming it is a small duration - perhaps a few months and not years. Also, I am not clear about how easy it is to work from home in jobs that need your skill with IBM mainframes. If it is a short break and that it is possible to work from home on IBM mainframes, here are some things you can do: 1. Go back to your previous employer and ask them if they are willing to re-hire you. If you were a good performer, companies are always ready to take people back at the same level. Also ask them if they can give you a work-from-home option 2. Talk to all your former colleagues and friends, to keep you in mind in case they hear of a job that suits your skills. 3. Register and scan for jobs on Sheroes.in 4. Search job sites for possible roles 5. Check out LinkedIn for possible roles I believe that it will be hard to get work-from-home roles that use your IBM mainframe skills - as this is a niche skill in a niche market. If that is correct, then use this time to build industry needed skills in an area of your choice.

Hello Maam I am MCA qualified and have served IT company as QA lead for 9 years. I have to quit my job due to my kid. Could you please suggest me appropriate platform where i can continue ewith my carrer without sacrificing my duties as a mother
31 May 2016, 11:00am
Dear Hairat - thank you for asking this question. Many women feel that working and motherhood are at cross purposes and one needs to be sacrificed at the cost of the other. They don't! Look around you and you will see successful mothers and professionals. Women who have balanced both responsibilities. Talk to them to learn what they did. Seek help with your care giving responsibilities as you would seek help with your professional responsibilities. Don't give up one for the other. Actively look for roles that leverage your education, knowledge and skills.

Hello Mam, I am Lavina and have over 10 years of experience in various finance roles (SAP process re-engineering and Finance), I am on a career break since 1 and half year due to motherhood, now that I want to get back to the corporate world, I am confused where to start, currently I have taken up a volunteering position more of people ops in an International NGO, need your guidance, although I am interested in analytics, I am not sure if this would mean re-vamping and starting from scratch, do you suggest I hone my skills in analytics or look for professional certification in finance such as CMA and continue looking for finance roles, I am okay to start with a lesser package but with meaningful and challenging role. Please advice
30 May 2016, 11:52am
Dear Lavina - thank you for writing to me. You, like many working women, take some time off when they have children and are eager to re-enter the workforce. You seem to have rich experience in Finance and SAP Process Re-engineering - so why not leverage that to re-enter the workforce (at the same level as you were when you left it!). It's been only 18 months, and you should be able to quickly update yourself with any changes in technology or rules that have happened since you have been out of work. Reach out to your prior organization, friends, family and job boards to actively look for a job. Please feel free to leverage our Sheroes network and job postings. If you are interested in Analytics, you can always get certified, whether you are working or not. Additional qualifications are always good to have if you are going to use them in your current role or the role you would like to get. I am not sure why you are looking at re-entering the workforce at a lower salary package? You have skills. You have expedience. Find an organization and role that values that and start working. It'll do you a world of good.

Hi Maam, I am Vimmi Gupta. I read about your career growth in 'Sheroes.in" and that is very impressive. Despite of being a woman and having lots of responsibilities on your shoulder you are so successful in your career. I also want to be successful in my career as like you but I am really confused at this stage of my life. I am a mom of 20 months old kid. I was working as a tax analyst in big 4 company but to welcome a new member in the family and to take care of him I left my job. Since I stay far from my family, only me and my husband is there to take care of my son. That's why I was not able to could not restart my career. But now I want to start up again but, I am confused which career to chose so that I can maintain proper balance between my professional and personal life. I am confused whether to join back the corporate or should I go for teaching profile where I will be working for fixed time and can come back home on time to look after my son. Kindly requesting you to suggest me the right path of my career on the basis of your experience so that I can also grow and be a strong independent woman. Thank you, Vimmi
23 May 2016, 06:26am
Dear Vimmi - thank you for writing to me. Balancing personal and professional life seems to always be a struggle, but one that can be resolved if you are able to prioritise what you want to do, knowing fully well that you can not do everything. Personal and professional life can not be, and will not be, in balance all the time. You will choose one over the other constantly. Make a concious choice, and not one based on norms. Choose based on what you will not compromise on and what you are willing to give up. A career has to be something that you are as passionate about as you are about looking after your son. And you can do both. There are ways to find reliable child care support / garnering more active help from your spouse. There are ways to find flexible / part time work options. Go out and look at all options without being constrained by anything. Choosing to become a teacher so that you can have fixed timings is an injustice to your dreams, the children you are responsible for as a teacher, and the profession (not to mention to your son). Become a teacher because you love teaching, you love the subject, you love partnering with children; not because you want more time with your child.

Dear Mam, Greetings! Hope you are doing well? I am a marketing and communications professional with an experience of 15+yrs. Have worked with Media, Banking, BPO. My last job was with one of the top BPO's in communications. However, due to certain personal reasons - had to quit . It's been 6 months that I have been applying to jobs but with no interview calls. My CV is good and I have the required skills and talent. But, CV not getting shortlisted - means that there are still gaps which I am not able to figure out. Can I please request you to review my CV and your inputs will help me gain confidence if I am on the right track. And if required, i'll make the recommended changes.
