Hi Ruchi, i am working as a project manager in IT planning team...have a 9 month old baby and it is getting difficult for me to continue work as my company does not offers work from home ..its a 12 hour clock for me from home-work -home. Kindly suggest..what should i opt as when i see other options like working for paid survey panels or freelancing...they does not offer the kind of remuneration i am drawing right now.. i am in a great fix as i don't want my kid to suffer ..at the same time..looking forward to a solution for my crazy work hours

Hi Isha, Project Management is difficult to be done from home. I think, till your child grows up you can try freelance developer work or wait until you can figure out a child care arrangement. In my experience, they grow up fast, and these days a lot of companies hire talented women back in the workforce. Take care

I think it will begin by cold calling and sending emails, establishing connections over linkedin will also help. Be open to structure your fees depending upon the company. Yes, mostly the companies charge after the selected candidate joins the organization.

Mahi, Please start by taking small steps, a big leap can appear daunting. Start by putting together your CV, apply for jobs online. I do not have an idea of your qualifications, so I am suggesting with limited understanding - you can start something small from home, that takes care of your and your child's needs and expenses. 30 Apr 2014, 11:01am
Hi Subhadra, Glad to meet you over this platform. If you are considering a break to take care of your son, my advice is to go for it. Intuitively, we know what is right for us and our families. There are plenty of flexible options available for you to consider. Before I pen them down, have you considered asking your manager/management of creating flexibility around your job. Sometimes, we assume that the answer would be 'no', so we don't ask. Options: 1. Can you coach/train younger engineers within your organization or in the same sector 2. Can you do some research and build more equity in your technical profile. 3. Can you help in hiring engineers and offer recruitment services to search agencies in this sector. 4. As you said, you are considering changing your career - can you look at teaching as an option, because it does allow good flexibility. This decision seems daunting and confusing, but once you are sure of it, then there would be plenty of doors that start to open up. Learn while you can, it will be the most useful thing.

Hi Ruchi, I have around 7 years of experience in marketing communications. My problem is the experience is scattered across various industries and no expertise. I had to take breaks due to maternity, company shutdown. I have done a bit of pr, bit of advertising and a bit of social media. Basically , Jack of all trades but master of none. The problem I face during interviews now which I believe is that companies cannot trust me on one role. If they need content writing I have no solid experience, if they need PR I have handled PR for a couple of years, If they need digital marketing then I only know a bit. Actually, I have given an interview in Pitney Bowes too in January this year, but was unlucky for reasons unknown but I guess they are as mentioned. 'I am stuck and don't know how to go ahead. Should I do some specialization course ..will it help. Look forward for your expert view. Thanks, Sweety

Hello Ruchi, Since you head HR, you are probably best placed to answer my query. After 20 years of working with a rich and diverse portfolio which included sales, marketing, revenue management, operations and selection to an Asia pac leadership programme for a leading International airline, my role became redundant. Being a single mom, i didnt have the luxury of taking a break but i still did to upgrade my educational background. Without an MBA, experience seems to be more of a liability :) Since the costs for an MBA from a good univ were prohibitive, i opted for an executive leadership course from an ivy league. Its been a year and I am still looking. Ive had to drasticaly bring down my CTC and sometimes deliberately underwrite my experience just so recruiters dont feel intimidated. What advise would you give? Do you feel companies still consider experience as a deciding factor as most of the vacancies for senior positions clearly announce : Only MBA from Tier 1 . How can i best optimise on my strengths without having to sound less than what i am. Look forward to your counsel:) Sincerely Sabita

Hi Ruchi, Hope you are doing fine. Pleasure connecting with you. I have more then 5 yrs of exp in HR gamut. I am currently working as a Generalist in of the startups. The employee force is quite young, energetic & full of new ideas where as i follow standard HR practices which dosent suits current culture. I had to take 2 sabbaticals because of my baby plus i did my MBA from Symbiosis corresp.. I really don't know where my career is shaping up.. I do love to interact with employee and also conducting employee engagement activities. This is my forte. How I should create my worth in the company and what else can be done on personal front ? I lack confidence in me because all my employee specially TLs dosent believe in me as an HR. I m very depressed right now. Feel like doing something which will prove all of them my worth. I wan to achieve big in my life make my name in HR.

Hello mam, I am Pubali Das, I did my Mba in Hr in 2010 , and got a job as a Hr trainee. After passing the interview, The company gave 2 conditions 1st-> they proposed not to gave me any appoinment letter or salary slip, , they will gave me appoinment letters as a permanent staff and with doubled salary after working 3 months, even in between if i wanted to left my job. I dont have to give any notice or money . 2nd-> if they will gave appoinment at that moment , then I had to work for 6months ,if i left company, I had to pay certain amounts to companyand or I have to face legal problems. As I needed that job and also had ambition to leave that job for better oppertunity, i chosed the 1st option. After working 1months , I had to leave that job because I had serious health issues at that moment. Since then I have been suffering from neuro related issues , I was not even able to walk or work,I did my spinal chord neuro operation, but doctor found out another nerve damage. Everyday I am trying to get better . And yes I am better than before . As I have 6 to 7 years gap in my career . With zero work experience, I really dont know how should I proceed .It feels like ,I have lost my everything ...careerwise I really dont know what could I do , or how will i proceed . If you please help and guide me . I shall be very much obliged. Mam my earnest request to you help me out .

Hello mam, My name is Sneha and I have done MBA in HR full time. I have an experience of 3 years with 2 MNCs in core HR mainly recruitment , operations learning and development and MIS . LAST year I had taken a break in feb and I am yet to start again. I am 30 year old and meanwhile I have been.thinking of going for upsc exam for which I have 2 attempts left. The reason for the career change has mainly been 1) did not get good profile in HR as I had expected while doing MBA 2) I have been academically good throughout and have aptitude for.social work and obviously the amazing work profile of IAS. However studying with job is not feasible for me due to excess travelling the job demands in mumbai. I want to know 1) is it a good idea to give 2 yrs for upsc preparation or should I take up job and study with it because 2 years gap in job will probably become too much 2) any courses I should take up to polish my skills in HR and get high package and profile 3) besides I am good in writing and a book worm. Also I love travelling . I.need a guidance in career. It would be really great if you can guide me with your invaluable HR experience mam. THANK YOU. 9819362186

Hi Ruchi, I am writing to ask you for advice related to my next career move. To give you a brief outline of my career graph, I am a visual specialist with over 14 years of work experience with leading Indian retailers in fashion, lifestyle and premium international brands. Having worked as a visual merchandiser for several years I wished to take a sabbatical as well as diversify my skills to include designing for retail environments. I quit my job in July 2013 with this intention and went on to do a one year post graduate diploma in design, after which I took some time off. Now, recharged and rejuvenated, I wish to join a creative or design agency in the role of a retail creative professional. The setback I am facing is that so far I have not received an encouraging response from such agencies, I’m not sure if this is due to • A lack of specific technical skills such as interior designing, architectural know how, graphic design etc. combined with my mid-senior level of experience which entails higher compensation • Or sparse networking skills and reach. (I fit the description of an artist immersed in the task at hand.) • Or if I need to repackage my profile. The following link will direct you to my updated visual resume that has all the required details on my academic and professional history. https://www.behance.net/gallery/32127899/Infographic-Resume Please do let me know how I could get a foothold in my chosen arenas at my stage of career. Thank you so much for your time and advice. Namrata.

Hi Ruchi, I am an HR professional with most of my experience in startups. My last assignment was in UK as HR and have come back to India last year in April. I do a lot of reading about HR faternity and try to keep myself uodated on latest trends . I have even enrolled myself in SCP-SHRM course believing it will give boost to my career. I want to have a career in established process oriented company now , but my CV never gets acceoted in such companies because I dont have relevant experience of working on processes like theirs. But I know that thats the place for me and once I work in an established company and get little mentoring, with my passion towards this stream and work area I can do a lot and make a difference not just within organization but into HR fertinity as a whole. What do you suggest ? How can I enter mainstream HR with some of the organized established companies? Thanks in advance for ur help.

Hi Ruchi, It is inspiring to see women guiding women to move forward as we only can truly understand each others struggles. Kudos to that! I need your guidance here - I have a total experience of 10 years in IT industry including 2 onsite US assignments. My qualifications are engineering and M.Tech in Comp. Sc. I have a joint family setup where my 6 month old is getting looked after but the work+travel timelines (12 hours) are posing a big inconvenience for everyone. I have thought about change in career but I keep feeling that I know only what I know, not feeling confident enough to take up any other profession and then start from scratch. If I give up my present job, conditions at home will force me to become a house wife which I do not want to. Feeling confused on what exactly should I change, a new job, different profession or just quit and take a sabbatical. Please guide as per your experience of profession and child rearing.
