Hi Pooja, I am assuming from your profile that you have good communication and customer skills. If that is the case and you enjoy that then there are many avenues you can explore other than call taking roles. You could look at finding jobs in PR, Client and account management, Business Development. again these can be industry specific depending on the product lines you are familiar with. A lot will depend on how you position yourself and your own confidence in projecting your skills. Regards, Rachel

Hi! I am Statistics graduate and have been preparing for Civil Services since then but could not make it to the final list. I want to do something where I can apply my civil services preparation knowledge along with statistics. Something like Social Entrepreneurship. Can you please guide me how should I proceed.

Hi Poonam, Thanks for reaching out. When you say Social Entrepreneurship do you have an idea in mind? If yes then the next logical step would be to do some market research to understand the need and start defining your business plan. Alternately you could start looking at some organisations that are doing similar things and get some experience before launching your own business. Regards, Rachel

Hi, I have been looking for the very same keyword that you used, "Optimising excellence". I have an experience of 2 years in ITES industry with the background of BCA followed by MBA. Now there is about a decade gap in my career coz of responsibilities as a daughter, mother and wife. I would like to rebuild my career. Could you please help? Regards, Susan John

Hi Susan, Thanks for reaching out and congratulations on your decision to restart your career. At this point, I would say that owning to the long gap you may be treated on par with most freshers. This is however not a bad thing. You now have the choice to decide what career line you would want to start with. You could look at restarting in ITES if you enjoyed the work. There are a lot of opportunities in that area. Or look at things that interest you and you enjoy. Get a list together of thing you like doing...like maybe organising, writing, creative things, ...Once you are clear on that you can then start looking at jobs that offer such opportunities. E.g if you like organising you could be in event management. The key is to start with your strengths and areas of interest. Hope this helps. Regards, Rachel

Hi Vijayalakshmi, Your idea is quite a good one. You will need to reach your target market and Quikr may not be the best place for that. Ask yourself where and how can Engineering students and IT freshers be reached? Some places are colleges, tution centres, study groups, etc. Similar places online is also an option to check. These would be places for you to market. You can also try tying up with some of these institiutes on a profit sharing basis. All the best! Regards, Rachel

Hello Madam, I want a little help from you regarding my career. I have completed my B.com and also completed Intermediate level of CA. Now I have recently shifted to my passion i.e. psychology & councelling. As I was a commerce student, so no college allows to enroll into MA psychology. So I have started a distance education course i.e Masters in Psychotherapy & councelling from Indian Board of Alternative Medicines, Kolkata and MA in psychology from IGNOU. As these are distant courses, I want to gain practical experience along with it. Please can you tell me where I can search for the internships or what should be my next step. I live in Ujjain(MP) but I can shift to any city for the practical exposure.
14 Jul 2016, 07:51am
Hi Purva, Congratulations on identifying your passion and making the bold move to shift industries. I agree that you will need practical experience. There are many ways for you to gain this but the easiest way may be for you to contact any counsellors who are practicing in your area and ask to work as an apprentice/assistant alongside them. Most counsellors will only agree for this towards the end of your course where you have good theoritical knowledge. You may also need to do this for free. Another way would be to apply for apprenticeship at hospitals but this is difficult to get through unless you have connects. Lastly also look at enhancing your skills by joining forums and communities of counsellors online and attending ther face to face or online events. AISCAP and Counselling Association of India are two that I know of. Im sure you will find more internationally aclaimed ones as well if you search in google. All the best! Rachel

Hi Akshatha, Thanks you for reaching out and my apologies for not getting back sooner. I think there are a few things you need to be clear about before you look for a job. 1. What are your areas of interest? I am assuming you are looking to work for a few years and starting with an area of interest is always good. Else in sometime you will be bored or may struggle to grow your career 2. What are the timings that work for you? What defines your work hours? Cn you work at any time of the day of only specific hours? 3. How do you see your work timings change 3-4 years down the line? There are multiple options available but I will be able to help you better once I know the above. Regards, Rachel

Hello Madam, I'm a homemaker with around seven years experience in BPO/KPO in technical, non-technical, voice, non-voice, domestic, international processes in big corporates. After around six gap years, I wish to restart my professional journey from a part-time, freelance, flexible option.  My strengths are: reading {news, books, magazines related to babies-children, health-fitness (including spiritual well being), entrepreneurship, Return to work women}. Write/ Can write articles about the same. Trying to find out ways in which processes could be refined or made to deliver better results. Curious, eager to learn new things, coming up with new ideas, take initiative. Talking to new people. Believe in using corrective Feedback systems. Areas of improvement: Unable to stick to one idea, new ideas just keep popping up, unable to convert them into sustainable, long term, full blown project/s.  Interests: Bringing awareness or change in Early years education and development, the way children are dealt with from both education and behavior points of view. Children and Parents behavior counselling, psychology. Yoga, eco-friendly lifestyle, recycling, waste management, upcycling, organic produce travel and nutrition. Networking with like-minded people, connecting with mentors. Interviewing inspiring people, who could be homemaker, a working mother or people high up on the ladder. Inpiring and encouraging (Coaching)-children, parents and youngsters. Being part of a process, absorbing it to find out area/s of improvement, coming up with ideas to improve it, experimenting with those ideas and then implementing the successful ones. Talking to all the stakeholders involved to analyse and derive workable knowledge from their experience. I would love getting to see how successful people live/ work, work with them, write about them. I want to contribute to society at large and ready to start small.

Hi Megha, Thanks for reaching out. It is great to see that you are open to options and willing to try different things. This flexibiity in your attitude can open up many opportunities for you. I would recommend that before you freeze on an option think 2 things: 1. Where do you want to be 5/10/15 years down the line in terms of success, finance, reach? Your definition of success is critical to your decision. 2. Why is working important for you? What happens if you dont work? Now with these answers in mind look at what works and doesnt work for you in the ptions you have listed. Next choose 2-3 options that interest you the most and build your expertise in them. E.g. If writing interests you take a few writing courses. Once you have some level of prificiency then apply for assignments. Do reach out if you need more help. You can also call me if you feel the need to talk it through Regards, Rachel

Hello Rachel, Hope you are doing good. I am a chocolatier with my special and limited edition of home made chocolates. I have been promoting my chocolates through friends, family and so on word of mouth.. It was at a very small scale that I was doing it till now. But with the kind of response and reviews that I have come across for my chocolates, I believe it would not be right if I do not take it further on a larger scale. I would like to know if you could help me with some idea to promote my product. Currently I would not be in a position to invest a high monetary figure for promotion. Hi Anila, Congratulations on setting up your venture and deciding to make it BIG!!! My first recommendation is to come up with your business plan...set milestones on what you want to achieve and by when. Then work on how you will do that. I can give you some basic tips which could help: 1. You dont need big money for marketting at this point 2. Your biggest and best way of marketting is to go with word of mouth. Ask family and friends to get you business/orders. 3. You can promote your product by holding stalls at events at minimal cost.....check facebook event groups or meetup.com 4. Facebook marketting is cheap and easy. 5. If you have any connects in the corporate world start doing gift hampers etc. This is big business in the corporate world and pays really well. For the moment I would recommend focussing on getting some steady income from this going. Then once you have some stability you can consider rebranding and marketting at a big scale. If you want to talk or think it through I can set aside time for a meeting. Let me know. Regards, Rachel

HI mam. After 5 yrs experience in IT as a techie i wish to switch to Digital Marketing.Although the switch seems to be dicey for me as what i know is to move ahead and reach to the top but whether this is the domain that would be helpful or not ,i dont know. Please guide me through.
17 Jun 2016, 07:54am
Hi Monika, Thanks for reaching out. In every field there are opportunities to grow and develop and get ahead. What were you doing before this? As a techie what was your areas of expertise? When you are looking to grow what is your definition of growth? Is it money, skillsets, knowledge, experience, designation? The career move you make from here is dependent on what you want in the longterm. Digital Marketting is a great field yes. But just choosing a field does not guarantee success. Level of interest, skill, ability to learn and develop , etc make a lot of difference in being successful. Also what you want 5-10 years from now is soemthing you should consider before making a move. Regards, Rachel

Namrata asked

Hi Rachel, I am writing to ask you for advice related to my next career move. To give you a brief outline of my career graph, I am a visual specialist with over 14 years of work experience with leading Indian retailers in fashion, lifestyle and premium international brands. Having worked as a visual merchandiser for several years I wished to take a sabbatical as well as diversify my skills to include designing for retail environments. I quit my job in July 2013 with this intention and went on to do a one year post graduate diploma in design, after which I took some time off. Now, recharged and rejuvenated, I wish to join a creative or design agency in the role of a retail creative professional. The setback I am facing is that so far I have not received an encouraging response from such agencies, I’m not sure if this is due to • A lack of specific technical skills such as interior designing, architectural know how, graphic design etc. combined with my mid-senior level of experience which entails higher compensation • Or sparse networking skills and reach. (I fit the description of an artist immersed in the task at hand.) • Or if I need to repackage my profile. The following link will direct you to my updated visual resume that has all the required details on my academic and professional history. https://www.behance.net/gallery/32127899/Infographic-Resume Please do let me know how I could get a foothold in my chosen arenas at my stage of career. Thank you so much for your time and advice. Namrata.
16 Feb 2016, 07:30pm
Dear Namrata, Thanks for reaching out. Firstly, I must acknowledge the focus and effort you have on your career. From your description I can definitely hear your passion for work coming through. I had a look at your resume and it does seem quite strong. There could be multiple reasons to you have not yet got into a profile you want. How many agencies have you approached till now and how long have you been looking for a role? When you look for a job opening and compare it to your profile how does it stand out? Does it meet what the agencies are looking for? ( if you are comfortable you could try asking firms that did not hire you on what they are looking for. If you decide to do this approach someone face to face or on phone. don't do this on email). This could help you redo your profile or add skills specifically needed. Sometimes people look for specific experience and if you do not have that think about how you can compensate for that with your creativity. Networking will always play a big role in getting you opportunities. In my line of work 90% of my clients come through referrals. Networking does not have to mean you get to know thousands of people. It means to know a few but leave a lasting impact. Even if there has been limited networking look back at people who you have worked with till now and reach out to the ones who appreciated the work you did. Let them know what you are looking for and some of them may at some point have something to offer or may refer you to someone. Another option could be to update your linked profile to let people know what type of opportunities you are looking for. Yes, I believe that you can get the profile you are looking for. It may need a little more work and some consistent push. Hope this helped. Regards, Rachel

Hi Dimpal Since you are already on your notice period that is going to mean there is less time to search jobs. But thats okay. this of this as a good opportunity to evaluate the situation and your priorities and then move forward. I would recommend that you first take stock of the situation. After moving to Bihar how much time will you be able to dedicate to your job? I also think you may want to list your priorities. Why do you want to work? Is it career, financial security? How important is money, type of work, etc for you? Im not sure how the job scene is in Bihar but once you get there you will have a better idea. Having said that before you look at that knowing what you want and can manage in the new setup is the first priority. While you do this thinking and job searching maybe you could search some part time gigs on freelancer or elance just to keep some income and experience going. Regards, Rachel

Hi Dimpal, Firstly, do you really need to quit your job right away? Can you look at taking extended leave or leave without pay? This will give you some time to see if you can sort out things at home or find other options. Did you discuss work from home option with Accenture? Or changing your job profile in Accenture that gives you a work from home option? Is moving to Bihar a long term thing or is it for sometime only? Has your husband always been in Bihar or is he there only now because of his mother's illness. Flexi/WFH options are there but may take time to find more so if you relocate before finding the job. Hi Rachel, Thanks for your response in May and apologies for the late response. I have 10 years of experience with HSBC and 24/7 Customer handling roles like Manager - Operations and Customer Experience and New Hire Training. I took a break on Sep 2010 for child care. Since Sep 2014 I worked as a soft skills trainer (freelancing) with VentureBean Consulting. I design and deliver soft skills training programs like Business Etiquette, Written Communication, Time Management, Developing Empathy, Personal & Team Motivation etc. I would like to start working full time in the training field. My expertise is in leadership skills for beginners to mid-management, improving customer experience, coaching & feedback and improving communication skills. I am also interested in game based learning. How do I re-start my career in training. I have great communication skills and a flair for training. I enjoy the interaction with the team and the high energy levels.

Hi Sonia Firstly you need to know that you have a strong experience and the kind of stuff you have listed seems to be quite useful. Also a strong corporate + management career before also gives you an edge. If you are looking to do training as a full-time thing a few certifications and building your experience will help. Employers generally look at 3 things while hiring: 1. Expertise( Certifications) 2. Experience 3. Positive attitude and energy level Most time 3. is the one that gets you through the interview where people try to gauge how enthusiastic and easy to work with you are. No.1/2 however are needed for your resume to be shortlisted for the interview. Since you have just got a contract with MMM is there something stopping you from taking that up( is it also a free lance position?). I would suggest that you continue to build your experience for a couple of years and add some certification and then look for a full time trainer position with a training organisation. Another option is to rework your resume to reflect the training work before and after the break and look out for jobs in corporates. That also is very feasible. In your interviews highlight how a strong management experience helps you know what is needed on the actual work floor Does this answer your question. Let me know if you need anything specific

Hi Rachel, I am fine with a job without engineering/design aspect. As long as its interesting and something I look forward to it will be ok for me. I want to keep myself usefully occupied.

In that case the possibilities are endless. Consider being a guest lecturer who gets paid by the hour at engineering colleges. Or you could start free lance web design/analytics work. Look for incubation centres for startups. Content writing is another option with great flexitime or work from home options.

Hi Rachel, Thankyou so much for your inspiring reply. I am based in Hyderabad. I am sincere , hardworking and give 100% commitment to whatever work I take up. I am good in spatial arrangement thinking and in problems that involve analytical thinking. I am good in Engineering drawing, I would not mind a part time opening in this area. I am not in touch with Design Engineering since last 14 years , so do not want to go back to that field. But something related to Engineering field where somebody is there to guide me initially is fine with me. If I have to upgrade my skills I am fine with it. I like creative writing, just a beginner in that field . I am interested in solving sudoku, crossword, yoga. Indian Handicrafts and temple architecture is something that has always fascinated me.

Hi Srividya, Reading your response the following stand out for me as your job requirements: 1. Flexitime ( you may want to define how many hrs in a week/day you want to work) 2. Work involving analytics/logic is something you enjoy There are few things that come to my mind: 1. You can look for engineering and construction companies that hire contractors on job basis or for specific projects( there are quite a few) Search for startups that generally hire freelancers/contracters for specific jobs 2. Explore free lance work online or on Linkedin 3. Explore a further education in analytics. This will be something different from what you have been doing and there are lot of freelance jobs for market research available that pay well. Question for you: What if you were to let go of the engineering/design aspect. Do you see yourself doing a job like that?

Hi Rachel, I am a Civil Engineer by qualification and my professional experience of 6.5 years was in Design Engineering. I took a break of 8 years from my professional career in order to raise my son. Later I restarted my career in the academic field and was teaching in an ICSE school . I taught Technical Drawing applications to std 9 , 10 and physics to std 6 to 10. Later due to relocating to another city I again had to take a break. Now its two years since I took the break and would like to get back into work. I want to take up something interesting. Could you suggest what all oppurtunities are there?. I would prefer flexi time type of job . I am not very keen to get back into teaching at school or design engineering either. I want to upgrade my skills but am not sure about the various options. Could you please guide me.

Dear Srividya, Thanks for reaching out. Firstly I think you have a good amount of marketable experience even if there are breaks. So that is a good thing! :-) To answer your questions I'd like to ask if you have anything specific in mind. Should the job be related to design engineering or do you want to start in a completely different field. Your question seems to indicate the latter. Another important factor is the city you are based out as opportunities vary by city as well. For us to come up with some options I recommend you send me 2 lists: 1. Your strengths( skills, knowledge areas, personal and character strengths 2. Your interests. What do you enjoy doing? What kind of work inspires and motivates you?

Hi Rachel, I am a freelance soft skills trainer with VentureBean Consulting and now have got a contract with MMM Training Solutions. I would like to get more practical experience in soft skills and behavioural training. Also I am keen on continuing my career in training even if it means a full time job in a training organization as I have realized that I have a passion for training and a flair to do a good job. I am keen on learning game based training programs. What is the way forward for me.

Dear Sonia, Thank you for reaching out to me. There are a few things I would like to know: 1. When you sat "soft skills and behavioural training" what do you mean? This field today is very vast so I need to know what you specialise in? 2. How many years of experience do you have? 3. What about training do you really like? If possible share your resume with me so I know more about you. Regards, Rachel
