Where Do they Go?

It was the month of May in the mid-80s. Vaguely remember, once while flipping through the pages of the newspaper to check the Hi & Lois cartoon strip of the day, (my only reason to pick up the newspaper back then) I chanced upon a news article spilling across multiple columns of the page - "GIRLS AGAIN OUTSHINE THE BOYS: SSC Results". My eyes shone with joy. I got a hook to support GIRLS ARE BEST in our war cry with the boys during our evening playtime. As expected, scored a brownie point with my girl-gang & sent the boys to huddle amongst themselves for a better comeback.

Over the years, chanced on similar articles, verbatim headlines. No longer needed the hooks. The fascinating stories of determination & dedication took me beyond the familiar headlines. The trials & triumphs of these girl outliers, thoroughly engaged & inspired me. Since past few years, my daughters have joined me in treasuring these yearly success stories as reference for their own academic year. Content, we go back to our lives.

Early this week, a YourStory piece highlighted by SHEROES.com jolted me out of my happy reverie. Shouldn’t have existed in the first place considering I have spent close to two decades in the corporate world & from time immemorial, it’s been grappling with gender imbalance. How many professions boast of having, forget more, equal number of women professionals in their fold?

So where do these bright, young promising girls who adorn the newspapers for a week, go? Who dims their light? What can WE do to keep their light beaming?
