Working from Home is not Easy

As a married woman with man and child, not to mention in-laws and relatives galore, I can tell you that working from home is not easy. Yes, we all have seen that ad or video online where the dude is wearing a suit and Skyping with clients, and as the camera zooms out, we see he's actually in his pyjamas, having just rolled out of bed. That's the attraction of work from home jobs - people feel they have more time for themselves to live and work like the way they want.

But that is oh so wrong for us women! Even when we are single without a husband and toddler in tow, we can't just roll out of bed and start Skyping for a business meeting. For starters, our hair won't agree to behave on time, and let's not even get started on how much time it will take to figure out what to wear!

But seriously, as a married woman and a married woman with child, you have to cook, take care of the household, have family time, pay bills, watch some TV, have a social life, the list goes on. There's your husband, kid(s), home, family, extended family, friends, everyone and everything in between that falls on your shoulders to take care of. Add work from home to this mix, and you will have to deal with distractions like keeping an eye on the maids, dealing with repairs, getting groceries done, making sure everyone is being fed on time, going through with beauty rituals so you don't look haggard on screen when Skyping with your clients or associates, doing homework with your kid, make sure your kid sleeps on time, carry her to her bed when she finally falls asleep in the most unlikeliest of places while you're on-call with a client, ah the list goes on. Sometimes even eating turns to be a distraction for me when I'm in the middle of programming. Such is the life of a work from home woman - we never stop working.

While I'm sure the 24/7 always-on work mode is true for all women, I feel us work-from-home moms get to use our brain and brawn to the extreme on a daily basis, because by the end of the day, we are so tired that we turn ourselves off by dinner time. Oh we are still awake, but we just turn into robots. I think I fall asleep every night before my head hits the pillow!

And then the next morning, we're fresh and ready to face the world through the tiny camera on our laptops again. We're invincible.

So how do you attain this invincibility?

First of all, you will need complete support from your husband, especially when there's a kid involved. Next, you will need the support of your family members who you can trust to leave your kid with while you're in a meeting or doing something urgent. And your biggest supporter will be your kid, whom you have to start grooming early on how working means a lot for Mamma. Once you have this support, you will be invincible.

So basically if you can enlist your family to work with you to make time for your work, and get a maid or two to take care of basic household chores, you can rule the world. I believe women are supremely talented but have to give up a lot to keep their lives simple and happy. But by enlisting the support of your husband, kid and family, you can work full-time, whether work from home, or outside home. Just don't try working from home because it sounds easy.

Trust me, it's not!
