Hello Poonam, From this short note, it looks like you are under estimating and under valuing your skills :-). What is stopping you from finding another job as a manager of a computer centre? Today there is a big need of skilled people to manage the IT infrastructure, be it large corporations, academia, governments and schools. Also look at organisations that employ and then deploy their people on contract to manage IT infrastructure at a client site, there are a number of organisations providing this service, you can get a job there. Also since technology is moving so fast, looks at if you need to upgrade your skills. If you need to, do a quick refresher course and get back, some organisations might also offer to do this for you during on job training. As far as setting up your own business is concerned, I think you should consider doing that a bit later, not now. Example you may choose to get back, do a job on IT infrastructure management/ computer lab management and then after some time when you are ready with the skills choose to set up your own organization providing manpower and similar service to more clients. All the best!

Hi Priyanka, Today IT is essential especially if you are looking at working from home. Look at IT as a skill for an industry of your interest. Can you think of a freelancing job you can do for hospitality industry? example, it might be tele calling, sales, managing customer database, CRM or how about a parallel industry, like travel and tourism? I know this industry offers work from home opportunities and require a people with good communication skills and someone who is trained on using the global travel management software like Amadeus. Also, how about becoming a trainer for English or any other subject utilising your skills and getting assignment with online tuition companies like Tutorvista, Vedantu etc. Hope this helps. Hi Manav, I am Aditi I am a Chartered Accountant by profession, I've been working in my Dad's firm of Chartered Accountants for the past 2 years however I'm really unsatisfied with my career as i do not want to pursue Accountancy and Taxation for the rest of my life. I want to start something of my own in the ecommerce space, I have a few ideas however I'm a little confused as to weather I should start my own online store rightaway or gain some experience in an ecommerce startup first. Could you also recommend me jobs which i can take up to gain some experience is this area.
29 Mar 2016, 12:30am
Hi Aditi, this is a great discovery :-) Always good to discover your interest and then follow them. Entrepreneurship is best learn by doing. My suggestion is first, don't leave your job and the money make, continue doing that and in parallel set up an e-commerce venture. Word of caution, don't do this because ecommerce is in fashion, genuinely look at the problem or a pain you can solve using you ecommerce. Also look at a cofounder for technology and business development, who can do this with you. If you want to get associated with startups and ecommerce firms, offer your existing skills to them, lot of these small firms need good CA's and tax advisors, this way you offer your services and in return you can learn from then, it can be a win-win. All the best!

I will be grateful and much oblized for your Guidance . Thanks n Regards Mable Dsouza
28 Mar 2016, 11:06am
Dear Ms. Mabel Dsouza, that's great. Take a small step in this direction first. Get associated with a pre-school and first learn what it takes to set up an independent enterprise. Once you are ready you can look at a number of pre-school franchising opportunities and also apply for a loan ( today there are a lot of loans offered to women entrepreneurs). Once you are confident and have gained skills, go for it. Alternatively, you can start a small activity club/ creche in your home for a couple of hours and leverage your network in your community to get this going and have a few children ( if you are just looking at home based options). Hope this helps.

Hi Manav, This is Smita and joined the Sheroes today. I have more than 20 years experience from Travel and academic industries. I have a creative mind. Apart from my full time job I managed to do small business from home to keep the creativity alive. I did not make much money out of it but really enjoyed. I worked in US for more than a decade and currently residing in India. Since past six years I gave up my full time job to follow my passion; I am a freelance Cross Cultural Trainer. Right now I am focused on making the things out of waste. My current project of making the lamps out of waste glass bottles was appreciated among my friend circle. I make few lamps and sell those among my friend circle. I would like to take this to next level but don't know how. My aim is to give employment to few underprivileged women. Your guidance will be appreciated to move forward. In remaining time I am totally involved in community service.

Hello Manav, I am Preeti Sarah Abraham. I have 9.5 yrs of experience in Operations, Project Management, People Management, Client Relationship Management & Process Re-engineering. I am aware of the currently challenge that I am being faced with after taking 5 years break [Motherhood and relocation]. However I have enrolled myself in distance learning PGDBA program which specializes in Project Management and Process Re-engineering. Plan to do PMP certification as well. But I gather that this too is not given weightage as the break in career is the most apprehensive part for all employers to consider my candidature. How do I go about explaining to them?
26 Nov 2015, 05:20am
Hi Preeti, These days people and organisations are more accepting to breaks, sabbaticals and even a return back to work after a startup attempt. So you just need to find the right organization. Keep on looking you will get one fit for you. Meanwhile you don't have to explain when you have a portfolio of work that can reflect your competency and talent. Have you tried to do short projects? assignments? Be open to them and keep on taking them, as you continue doing your search. Don't worry too much about how much you get paired for this as getting back to work and demonstrating your skills is more important, money will follow. My suggestion is do PMP certification along with some work as that will make it more valuable and relevant. All the best!

Hi Shweta, You have great experience and congratulations on all your experience. Have you had a discussion for getting flexible job option with your manager? or other leaders in your organisations? My suggestion is to look for internal job opportunities that give you flexibility. If you don't have these in your field, have your explored other opportunities in your organization but in a different field ( I am assuming your home and family is more important, so you can be flexible and at the same time get another experience). Don't leave your job till you have figured all this out, in most of the case I have seen young women like you negotiate for a win win. If nothing works out, go out and looks for an appropriate opportunity. A lot of startups and young organisations need talented people like you on a part time basis. All the best!

14 Aug 2015, 12:36pm
Hi Jaya, I am assuming you wrote this to me, not Abhinav :-) . Your education credential are great! I would like to understand why you are excited about a startup? Startups require serious commitment. Don't start unless you and your husband can give 101% to it. It's a good idea to join a startup and get some exposure, but it all depends what you are passionate about, how much time you can give given you have a 2 year old daughter and what value you can provide a startup you join? Looking at your education, you may try and evaluate if you can join tech support or project management or marketing or maybe something else? startups typically require a person with multiple skills, have full time/past time/ freelancing jobs.. so you can work out various options. Best way to discover is go out yourself, meet people who can do soft introductions, meet cofounders and meet consultants who do placements for startups. All the best!

Hello Viji, Congratulations on the work you are doing and great to hear Sheroes got to you some good opportunities. On content writing like so many freelance jobs there are no standard payment structure. It really upto you on how you would like to get paid. I know some good content writer just have a non-negotiable per hour rate and they get paid for the work they do and demand. It really depends on your skills, your credibility, your clients and the budget they have. 22 Jul 2015, 07:30am
Hi Dimpal, I am doing great! Thanks for asking. I understand your situation and I know this is a challenging situation for both you and your husband to manage. But its great to see your commitment for your family. Typically its hard to get WFH options in software as mostly it requires working in teams or being in close proximity with a team. But before you evaluate those options, have your spoken about your situation with your HR or your manager? Typically a big organisation and employee friendly like Accenture will have multiple options for your to consider. Here are a few things I would suggest you do before making any decision: 1) Talk to your HR or your Diversity team on what are the option available in such situation, is there a part time option with Accenture that you can consider? in software or even otherwise 2) Can you take a non paid sabbatical for 1 year and join back?. I know Accenture value women in the workforce and is working to increase its diversity ratio. Go and talk to multiple people, not just your manager ( your manager may not know everything). I am sure you can work something out at Accenture. If this doesn't work out you can consider changing your field and looking at flexible/WFH options in adjacent field, like for example doing project management in a consulting firm that is doing business in Bihar with the government on IT infrastructure development or management or e-governance etc or try evaluating some work options with the manufacturing firms in areas that may need IT infrastructure support or supply chain management using ERP etc. All the best! Hello Manav, I am Seema with close to 9 years of work experience with reference data. I had to quit 2 years back as I delivered a baby and also moved from Bangalore to Delhi. e are now moving back to Bangalore and I am now quite keen and ready to start working again. I have been applying for many jobs. I have also been getting calls from consultants but most have hardly got any chance of appearing for interviews as after knowing about my break, most of them do not turn back. Please help me understand how can I overcome this problem ?
12 Jan 2015, 08:26pm
Hi Seema, A few things you need to look: 1) Do you need to update/ refresh your skills? If you are looking at a technical position, the world is moving pretty fast, you may need to do some course or bridging the gap kind of a program that can help you be competitive with the present trends/ tools 2) Second question, Are you applying to the right organisations? Besides consultants use your networks, get a soft introduction with people in large organisation or the right organisation that will support women joining back work. You can meet, discuss and explore. Also spend more time in educating your consultant what you actually want. I have seen the more you educate your consultant the more they help or are better equipped to help, so spend time with them. Keep on going. It will all happen. All the best! Manav

Hi Geetha, this is great! knowing what you are passionate about is majority of the work done. Now the question is how do you convert this into a job and get payed too. Have you discussed this with your manager or your HR team, go do that, ask for extra assignments, I am sure your bank has a role for people with your interest..like in corporate communication, employee communications etc. I have found existing workplaces as a fantastic place to explore more...ask for some short assignments or just volunteer. Also, do you have your own blog? get some of your writing and thoughts out there, you never know who will notice and give you work.

Swathi, technology is moving very fast, have you thought about doing a quick refresher course? think about it. If you want a job in web development or coding, find a good course with a very strong industry component and get your self out there. Another route you can consider is joining a small agency doing online work, do some projects and then look for a bigger break. You can think similarly and come up with another way. Whatever route you take make sure you get to do some real hands on work and get tuned to whats happening

Hi Manav, I am based and working in USA. I have always dreamed of opening my NGO in India for women empowerment that will help women realize their hidden potential and help them gain economic independence. I have a vague idea of this and not sure where to start from. I always think about helping women to become more independent but do not have a direction where to start from and what to do. Appreciate your guidance on this. Thanks.
12 Nov 2014, 08:12pm
That's great! My suggestion will be to first try this out and as we say "get out of the building" to discover on the ground by meeting people, interviewing, having an immersive experience on what this really could means? try to get down to the specific by talking to women in need, what's already going on, where are the gaps and figure out what role you can play. Another good option will be to work or just volunteer for an NGO doing work in your areas of interest. After that get down to a specific "problem statement" on what your NGO will solve/ enable and make available to women. Come up with a value proposition, if you really know what specific problem you are trying to solve, that is 90% work and if you get this right, register your non profit go, build your team and just execute. All the best!

Dear Manav, Need your advice as I am quite confused right now regarding best career for me based upon my experience, skills and inclination where I can achieve work life balance and be able to give time to my kids. I have uploaded my CV in my sheroes profile. My current job has become really hectic due to the travel from Gurgaon to Noida. I was looking for some job opportunities in Gurgaon relevant to my skills but somehow nothing has materialized till now. I am away for 14 hrs in a day from home which I do not want to continue any more. I am also looking into the possibilities of doing something on my own especially in education field as I feel I have the natural talent in dealing with Kids. Kindly advice.
14 Oct 2014, 11:03am
Hi Rupali, You need to either move your work close to your home or move your home close to work. This can be so draining especially knowing the traffic in Delhi and the distances. My suggestion is not to take any immediate action like leaving your job. I am sure you have a great career and it will be good to find the right balance. You need to plan the transition over a few months, say 3-6 months. Evaluate options of moving your work or home. If starting on your own and education inspires esp being with children, there are some very good options in education franchising. Look at getting associated with a good brand as business partner, opening up a playschool, science center, STEM centers, life skills training etc .. Hope this helps. Have a great Diwali! Manav

Can you please suggest me some upgrade courses which will help me get back an analytics job? is there any other short term course that could help me?

Hi Minakshi, That's not a long break. You can pretty much go back to a job straight. There are some very good women friendly organizations that I know will consider you. Regarding doing a course, it is good irrespective to upgrade your skills and keep on doing that continuously. Depending on your location and your time commitment consider going for a certificate course from ISB, IIM Bangalore, IIM Ahmedabad, SP Jain, FMS. Just make sure that the certificate has a strong industry component and has some good senior people attending to help you increase your network so that you can leverage. Hope this helps. 22 Sep 2014, 03:39pm
Hi Rashi, there are enough challenges in the developmental sector to go after. So if you are not challenged, think about it, are you in the wrong job or wrong organisation or maybe wrong profession? Education is good and gives a solid foundation, but on ground and immersive experience counts more. If you want a corporate career, there are CSR functions in organisations that will value you experience. Lastly, if you are still looking for something else or not challenged, you can always create your challenge and go after it (my favourite recommendation, start your enterprise). All the best!

Hi Kaveri, We all have gone through the stage that you are going through. It's a bit challenging initially for a fresher to get a job, but believe me it all works out. I did go through your profile but could not get much information. What kind of HR jobs you are looking at? what skills you have or are interested in? What projects you have done in your MBA? Make sure you give as much information about yourself. Here are some other tips that you may like to consider a) leverage your network, ask for soft introductions and go and meet as many people as possible. Jobs come to you when you move out of the building. b) Don't hesitate to take on short term assignments, freelance opportunities or projects. You need to build your CV c) Looks at multiple ways to get your CV out there, Sheroes and others portals, recruitment firms etc also don't hesitate to apply directly on company's website, often big organization advertise new and entry level position on their website d) Heard about job referrals? talk to your friends who have already got a job, often organizations encourage their employees to refer their friends and in turn get good bonuses, its a win-win. Talk to your friends. All the best!

Worked for a public sector and currently on a break- looking for home based jobs . Have applied for a number of content writing and course creation jobs through sheroes but have not received any response so far. Your advice would be appreciated - thanks..
23 Jun 2014, 05:01am
Hi Marie, what kind of content writing or course creation are you looking for? I can answer this better if I know this. Meanwhile something that can enhance your chance of getting an assignment is showcasing your work past work on this. It always helps to show your future clients what you can do as a reference ( make sure you have adequate permissions from your clients). Also having references will help from people who can endorse you on this skill. In case you have not done any assignment and looking for new opportunities, create something, like a document on QA or a small module of a course, something that you own (without getting into any IP conflicts) and put it out there for people to see as a reference. Getting noticed in these assignments is important, so make sure you are also active on blogs, social media and have a good online presence

Hi Manav, hope you are well. I'm an HR Professional based in Dubai for the past 10 years. I work with an American oil company. Been wanting to do something more creative and meaningful (changing the world kind - as you mention in your profile!) for the past few years and trained in Fashion Styling and Photography. Feel so happy to be practicing this, especially when I feel like I'm contributing to another's I'm confused about when to give up my day job (and the substantial money that comes with it). I'm not the most practical person (especially when it comes to money) so I need your advice. With regards, Belinda Pereira
31 May 2014, 06:42am
Hi Belinda, what a perfect place to be in. Breakthroughs happen in this state of wandering. So stay there and keep on asking yourself, you will get an answer. Here are a few tips from my side: 1) Try out something first, a small initiative, that intersects your passion (assuming its being with people and creative expressions). See what can intersect your passion and can give you money in future, just an example, how about using your photography skills and creating photo stories that can bring to life stories of people and their initiatives, stories of problems that exists, story of fun, heroics etc. Or using your skills to teach young people visual expressions or workshops on creativity. or freelance journalism, supporting youth etc etc I am sure you will come up with tons of these which will work for you. 2) Don't leave your job as yet. That's a big mistake "potential change the world agents" make by just becoming restless. First try out things while doing your day job as long as there is no conflict of interest with your present employer. Which I assume there is none as your work for an oil company. Many organizations today allow their employees to do something of their interest as long as there is no conflict and as long as you are not doing the same in your day time work. Also when you come up with something, discuss with your manager and leaders and disclose it so that you are clear 3) Keep on trying multiple small initiatives, learning about yourself by doing is best. When you figure out specifically what you want to do, and if requires a lot of your time, gives your fulfillment and if that possibility and passion become greater than what you do in your job, leave. Hope this helps. All the best. Manav

Hi Divya, I will need more information to answer this appropriately. Hello Manav, This is my summary - I built a career of 8 years in advertising having worked with some of the biggest companies, serving some of the biggest marketing giants in this area. Quit this career last year April, got involved in a start-up about food tourism pretty soon after that. From past month - Kind of on a break from the start-up business to figure out what I really want to do with my life. In terms of qualification - A commerce graduate and a post graduate in Advertising and PR, with main focus on Advertising. Learned German language from Goethe Institute in Delhi, was among one of the toppers during the course and have been rewarded with scholarship programme for 2 months further learning in Germany. Wanted to utilise the language skill in the area of my advertising and marketing career. Couldnt do it. Language skill is therefore is almost dead unless I start actively practicing it again. But don't know what to do with it. This is one area I need help with. In terms of other interests - I am very much interested in learning about agriculture/fruit OR vegetable sciences/horticulture and want to know how to approach this totally new field and what earning livelihood opportunities lie within. I am also an animal lover and looking at other areas where I can service or provide a helping hand in animal care. Either as a job/building something of my own. These are the things I love to keep myself involved in full time. However, I dont have the right direction yet. I would really like a conversation about this and looking forward to some useful advice.

Hello Manav, Greetings! I am Post Graduate in Environmental Sciences and have previously worked with an Environmental Consultancy for 2.8 years. I am an ITIL Foundation certified professional. My job profile with my previous employer was that of Project Management though on a small scale. Since it wasn't an IT firm I was never introduced to any Project Management tools. Although the job required extensive client coordination, documentation, presentations and working closely with the BMC (Municipal Employees), I thoroughly enjoyed working. However, I had to take a break due to maternity and had to shift base too and due to a long gap of almost 2.5 years employers are hesitant to hire a Sit At Home Mom I reckon. I am not sure how to go about searching or am I not searching it the right way? I feel very depressed being rejected everytime after an interview.
