Hi Kiran, I am a journalist living in Mysore. I worked with the media for one and half decades before quitting to be home. I tried ghostwriting for a while and then the options reduced. The pay was decent, but the workflow became irregular. And money for freelance is so low. I am a bilingual writer, proficient in both Kannada and English. I also have theatre background. Right now I am working on a Kannada book that has excited the literary circles since it is about a woman theatre director. That will be out in August. My life comes to a huge question mark after that. I need some sustained activity that can generate me decent income and use my skills. Mysore has a limitation in terms of opportunities. Also, I now like this WFH option that gives me ability to multitask. Can you suggest me something I can do online to use my skills and generate a decent income?
25 Jun 2016, 01:18pm
H Preethi, thanks for writing in. I agree completely that it is essential for one to have a sustained flow of regular income. There is a lot of demand for translations with publishing houses, and transcribing, perhaps you could check those out for the bread and butter part of the income which you could do remotely. Do your freelance writing only for the topics that interest you and can be showcase efforts for your portfolion.

Hi Kiran. I have been working as a content writer since 5 years now however, currently on a sabbatical owing to the birth of my daughter. I would like to work as a freelance writer, but kind of have hit the writer's block up to the extent that can't even think of a topic to write on. it's like staring at screen, fingers on keyboard, whirlpool of words in mind, but not able to frame a story. I Shall be grateful if you advice me on the same. Regards, Rashi A Mital Mital.rashi@outlook.com
24 Jun 2016, 07:02pm
Hi Rashi, thanks for writing in. I recommend you ease back into writing by beginning on the reading. Start reading as voraciously as you can, the words would come back. As for freelance writing, zero down on the niche you want to write in and send out samples of your work to all the magazines or websites that publish such work, and see how that goes. Some folks might be keen enough to commission you to write something, or send in speculative pieces to build up your portfolio again and take it from there.

HI Monika, Thanks for writing in. Digital marketing is a new and exciting emerging field, and although I don't know much about it, my forte being more in the content space, I do know this is a field with promise. I'd recommend you speak with someone already in the digital marketing space to see how your skills and abilities would be of value in this space, and what opportunities of growth you would have, before taking a call. All the very best.

Hello Kiran, I am BE qualified and have served IT company as Senior Engineer for 4 years. I have to quit my job due to my kid. I have experience in testing field but I don't want to enter in to that field. Now I am looking for Non technical, work from home job in any sector. I am open to take up new challenges and responsibilities. Could you please suggest me an appropriate platform.
01 Jun 2016, 12:00pm
Hi Ashwini, thanks for writing in. I can advise you to look for opportunities in writing content for technical magazines and websites, if writing interests you, given your technical expertise. At a very basic level, to begin with there is always database development and maintenance, transcriptions, and outbound calls, while you scout around for better WFH opportunities. Another interesting field opening up is that of online tutors, which is pretty lucrative. Also do check out recruitment, if that is a field that interests you. Some recruitment firm do look for employees who can work remotely. Hope this helps.

Perhaps she could do a short term web designing and computer graphics course from any professional institute and take on freelance assignments from home. There are plenty of courses available both online and off, and a person in the art and design space would be able to help you with specific queries. All the best to her.

Alas, Bhavna, I am completely clueless about print modelling. I think the standard procedure is to make a portfolio and send the pictures out but that's the bare basics I know. You must check with someone who is in the field of advertising or modelling, I'm sure they would be of more help than I am regarding this. All the best.

Hi i am Bharti Sinha. i am a housewife graduate in Communicative English wanting to work now since my kids are grown up and i have enough time in my hand. i have a flair for writing and would like to blog or make a career in content writer. please guide.
29 May 2016, 12:48pm
Dear Bharti, I suggest you begin with a blog, on whatever topic you are comfortable. Make sure you make your blog niche specific rather than a little bit of everything. Once you have a fair amount of content/posts up on your blog, you could approach online magazines/sites and ask to write for them. You will already have your blog as a showcase of your writing abilities. There are many sites and online groups for content writers seeking assignments, a lot many opportunities get posted there, I suggest you join them. Make sure the content you put up on your blog is good enough, so anyone who goes through the blog is convinced that you would be able to deliver quality content. All the very best!

Hi Kiran....I am Sonal Sharma From Indore. I Have been working as a jornalist in print media since 11 years. Meanwhile I also got some exposure related to public relation. I am a mother of one year olb baby and want to work from home but could not find great opportunity like this that gives you good amount of money. Kindly suggest what else I can do...? Thanks for taking time to read my query!
29 Apr 2016, 03:13pm
Hi Sonal, since you have experience in print media and with public relations, I could suggest you pitch for projects like corporate journal content creation for small companies which might not have the resources to hire a full fledged editorial team to handle it. You could also take on editing projects with publishing houses, or writing newsletters for organisations. These pay pretty well, and they are regular work.

Hey Kiran, I am Sneha. Working as a journalist in an online media company in Bengaluru. I am looking out for a job now. Can you please suggest me where i can apply. I have nearly 8 months of experience in this field.
23 Mar 2016, 08:48am
Hi Sneha, thanks for writing in. I suggest you shortlist the exact field you are interested in --whether reportage, fashion and lifestyle, tech, etc, and then look at online portals in that space. Once you have done that, do take courage and mail in to the editors with samples of your work and stating you are looking for an opening. Else, you could keep looking at employment opportunities posted on portals such as Sheroes. The bottomline is do your research, look at companies in the space you are interested in, and dont be afraid to cold call and enquire if they have openings available. Hope this helps.

Dear Riddhima, thanks for writing in. I wish I did have any expertise in the art world and I perhaps would be better equipped to give you an answer that would be more comprehensive. All I can say is keep painting and showing your work via social media, if you cannot show in galleries. Also keep working on your skills. Eventually your work if it is good will find its audience. Hi, Kiran I am a four months old journalist. Needless to say very new to the industry. I have a master's degree in finance and wanted to do financial reporting because I like to write. I wanted to write stories that make an impact. However, so far, my biggest challenge is that I am unable to conduct good interviews-- given the lack of journalistic or reporting style attitude and thinking. I was hoping to ask you for some tips and tricks of conducting good interviews. (Besides that I do read up about the background of the person and the context of the interview, please give insightful way of conducting an interview. Will appreciate if you could give examples, so it is easy to assimilate). Thank you!

Hi Kiran. I have been working as a sub-editor for close to eight years and have been in daily newspapers since 2013. I don't want to continue as I feel the daily deadline-driven media is not for me. However, I am also concerned that if I rush into getting a new job I might end up in a similar stressful environment with no time for myself or family. What I wanted to know was that if I quit my job and take some time off to do some lighter work for a few months, like volunteering with an NGO or taking up freelance writing projects, will it reflect badly on my CV the next time I apply for a full-time job? As in will be considered a slacker? Also, will my last CTC be counted as the one I currently have or whatever small amount I earn with NGOs or freelance writing.
