Hi, I have started online business 2 months back which is into beauty & wellness services at home. But since 2 months our customers ratio is same . We are currently working on SEO,marketing strategies but please suggest us how can we survive in this competition era

Hi Jaya Congratulations on starting your online business. Beauty and wellness doorstep services is an extremely competitive market with online as well as offline players - large and small already existing. In such a situation, capturing a market share will be challenging for a new entrant like yours. The venture will also require a very amount of marketing dollars to be spent for creating a brand presence. In my mind, there are two ways to beat the competition 1- create a strong differentiator for the services that you are offering - Offer something that is not available in the market right now. The differentiator could be in terms of price, quality, type of service or anything else - but it should be a substantial difference over others not a marginal difference. 2 - Find out the challenges that the customers are facing with the current service providers and ensure that the customers that you are servicing don't have similar complaints / problems. Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Hi Ishita, I am Sridevi, working as Deputy Manager, Finance in DST Worldwide Services India Private Ltd. I am planning to take a break from work to take care of my 3 years old kid. Since beginning I was interested in having a business of my own, In the current scenario, I would like to start a business, where I can spend only part time or can have the business established at my home (Nizamabad where my husband is getting transferred or at Kondapur, Hyderabad where we currently stay), so that I can pursue my business and at the same time take care of my kid. I am interested in food business, or a organic grocery store or clothing business. But I have no idea, on how to start, organize and run the business. Can you please help me to take a decision.
18 Aug 2016, 12:26pm
Hello Sridevi, Great to know of your entrepreneurial aspirations. Your question is rather broad and challenging to answer in brief. However I will try my best to answer. Firstly, there are various opportunities available for stay-at-home moms to start a business. If you are registered with SHEROES, they keep sending you entrepreneurial opportunities that you may pursue from any location. Alternatively, you can also start something of your own. Think of all those areas that you are passionate about. (Example - gardening, designing, finance, cooking etc) and/or have in depth knowledge of. Then think of the potential businesses that you can do around these areas. (For example, if you are passionate about gardening, can you hire a team of gardeners and providing gardening services for houses? Or can you guide say other women on how to manage their finances?) Then think about the market - will potential customers pay you for this service? How many will pay? What amount? Finally, will you be able to easily access vendors / supplies / equipment and tools that may be required for this business? And the most important question - what is the profitability of the business. This kind of an analysis will help you select what business to do - Once you have decided that, do a pilot - provide your services / products to a limited set of customers, take their feedback, and based on the response received, start your business. Hope this helps. Best of luck

28 Jul 2016, 01:07pm
Hello Dhruvi, Nice to know about your business. Since you have given limited details about the business, I can't give you a specific answer but generally speaking, there are various options available for procuring finance. There are various companies such as Capital Float that provide Venture debt. Then there are government schemes such as Standup India and others that provide easy finance for women entrepreneurs. Lot of incubators and accelerators facilitate seed funding. Angel investors is also an option for innovative hi-growth ventures, however given that you have not launched the website and there is not proof of concept yet, equity funding from professional investors may be a challenge. Another option for raising funds for the seed round is from your friends and family. The best option in my mind though is to bootstrap and use the revenues from the current business to gradually keep building the web based product. Best of luck!

14 Jun 2016, 12:09pm
Hello Farzana Congratulations on the motherhood. And hats off to your entrepreneurial spirit . Farzana the business that you want to start can be about whatever you want - Jwellery, shoes, bags or all three of them or anything else for that matter. What matters more, in my opinion, is to find out - if possible - what, out of all the potential products or services that you can sell, has the most market potential and higher margins. You must first find out what is it that has a need in the market and accordingly plan your venture. It will make more business sense. Also, given the competition that exists in all these categories, you need to figure out what is it that you can do or sell differently about these products (or any other) such that customers come to you instead of competitors. Hope this helps. Best of luck

Hi Padmini, glad to know that you want to be an entrepreneur. This path is full of hardships and tough decisions and so it makes sense to start a venture in an area that you are passionate about and understand very well. You may start by identifying opportunities for starting a business venture in a domain that you have a grip on. Identify some challenges in that domain and think of the solutions that you can offer via your venture. Do some market research and find out which solution is the most wanted / needed in the market or in other words, the solution where the maximum number of potential customers are willing to pay a price. Also, try to estimate the costs and the revenues to see which one of the ventures could most profitable. Finally - get a co-founder. Hope this helps. Feel free to get back with more questions. Hi Ishita, I have been making plans of starting my own venture for a while now. I am keen to start something in the medical or science writing domain. God willing, one day maybe it can be a place where women from science and technology who were unable to pursue their dreams in the field, get an opportunity to still keep up with it and participate in it through writing about it. I have limited experience in the field, but a lot of interest. Could you please guide me in the how one can go about starting a venture in this domain and the possible ground work needed to take the next steps. Thanks in advance. Regards, Aditi
12 Oct 2015, 11:44am
Dear Aditi, glad to know that you want to be an entrepreneur. You can begin by trying to identify any 5 challenges / problems of the people in this domain. And then think of the solutions to these problems which can be offered by your venture. After that you will need to figure out which of the 5 solutions have a need in the market. Or in other words, would potential customers want to pay a price for the solution that you are offering. If yes, which one of the 5 will have the maximum number of repeat customers. To find out the market potential, you can speak with potential customers, make a dummy product and try to sell it, gauge potential customer reactions etc. This will give you a fair idea of which venture out of the 5 has the most potential. Finally, work out the costs and the potential revenues to understand the profitability of venture. This should help you figure out which venture to start. Also, suggest that rather than limit yourself to a particular domain, be open to all domains / industries initially. You can eliminate ventures based on the findings of the ground work / research that you do. Hope this helps. Feel free to write back with more questions, if any.

Pragati asked

Hi , My name is pragati jindal .I am currently working with RBS bank in technology domain in Gurgaon. I have done my 12th with PCM. Then I completed my graduation from JIIT,Noida in 2013 . From then its been two year I am with RBS. But I don't find the technology interesting any more.I want to shift my carreer from tehcnology. Also my health doesn't allow me to pursue a continuous sitting desk job. As I had been feeling this from quite some time,I thought of giving CAT this year and to do an MBA from an A tier B school .I joined TIME institute ans started studying .Now I have started to wonder that would it really change my world or may make it even worse. As my job would get more hectic and I don't want to get into a stressful job. of thinking that even if I do an MBA my life would remain same more or less. When I talked to some of my teachers at time, they told me that go for marketing or better sales and u about have that much of sitting. But I am still not sure..how true that it. Lately I heard about image consulting as a career option but then I got really doubtful about its scope and how should I go about it...whether I should drop my MBA prep and go for image consulting or first do an MBA and then think about it in future. But then I talked to one of the image consultants at ICBI southex delhi and she told me that these are two different things... MBA wnt help.I should not go for it at all and straight away do the course available . Now I am so confused about everything. MBA/job/image consulting/some other career option if you can suggest any Please help me get through my dilemmas and questions.
18 Jul 2015, 09:07am
Hello Pragati, Almost everyone of us have gone through this phase where we are confused about what to do next. While I cannot take the decision for you, I will surely try to give you my perspective on things. According to me, your health is the most important aspect of your life. If your health is fine, rest of the things will fall in place. If your health does not permit a sitting job, look for the kind of job and career which will suit your health and then think if you need an MBA for that career. A masters degree shall expand your horizons, increase your knowledge but may or may not open up other opportunities. So think of your priorities before deciding on the MBA. Also, selecting the type of the job is in your hands. Even after doing your MBA, its not necessary that you choose to do a job that is very hectic and stressful. A lot of companies these days offer flexi-time jobs or part-time jobs. Refer to the SHEROES websites for such jobs. Another option that you can think about is to start your own business, where you can decide your own hours of work and the nature of the work that you are doing. Last of all I would like say, choose the option that your heart agrees with. Best of luck!

Hi Ishita I have recently left my job post the birth of my twins. I have an overall work experince of seven years in banking and customer service. With the additional responsibility of taking care of twin babies, I am not in a position to take up a full time job. I have come across the work from home business opportunity from Smartq. Hello Kirti Congratulations on the twins. I am sure your day must be getting over sooner than ever right now :) Kirti, without understanding in more detail about your personal & career goals and about the business opportunity, I am frankly not in a position to answer this question. However, generally speaking, I would be think that most work-from-home business opportunities gives you the flexibility to work on your timings, at your own terms and give you an opportunity to put some time aside for yourself from your daily routine. And all this while you are earning money. So if you can spare the time out of your daily routine and your household responsibilities to meet the requirements of this opportunity, you should definitely consider taking this up.

But the challenge which I am facing is Financial. I have got a lot of ideas but only challenge is Financial Support. I would be happy if you can please give any solution to this problem.
25 Mar 2015, 09:46am
Hello Urvashi I would like to begin by congratulating you on your entrepreneurial aspirations. Finance is always the largest challenge faced by entrepreneurs and there is no single solution to this problem. Typically, new businesses are started with founder's savings coupled with a 'friends and family' round. Where you show your business plan to close friends and family members and ask them to invest in your business. Once the business gets going and revenues start generating and the business starts getting traction from customers, then formal channels of financing such as angel investors or banks may be approached. This also depends on how big do you want to make your business and the nature of the business that you start. I suggest that you should always conduct some research and find out what is the scope of this business by reaching out to potential customers and gauge the financial viability of the business before you start investing any money. Hope this helps you.

Hello Mam. I am Nishu Sharma working as an Electronics Engineer since last 8 years in the industry. I am from a landlord family and hence want to go back and want to start Zero Budget Farming(Spiritual Farming) and Dairy Plant to the lands that I am owning. My lands are very near to NCR region so I think there is a great scope for Dairy(Good quality of milk) and Organic vegetables to the NCR region. Since I am earning good and have not taken any step in this business plan so just looking for some guidance from your end. Is it a good idea to leave job and then start business or I can start this side by side.
05 Feb 2015, 06:55am
Hello Nishu. Good to hear from you. I would suggest that you should first work on the business plan along with your job. You will find a lot of business plan templates online which you can use as a starting point. You will need to conduct some research and find out what is the demand for products that you want to sell, how you will cope up with the competition, estimate the costs and revenues etc. Making a business plan will force you to think in a lot of detail about the business that you want to do. You will also get an idea of the capital that you need to start the business. You may also want to get a partner/advisor on board who is familiar with organic farming and can guide you on this. Once the business plan is made and you are convinced of the profitability and sustainability of the business, you may think about quitting the job. Even then, perhaps you can start some spade work for your own business along with your job. That would be a personal decision that you will have to take based on the comfort level, time availability, contract/appointment letter signed with your employer etc.

Hi Ishita, I have been working in Print Industry since last 12 years. Few months back have left the industry and started my own preschool brand in Kanpur. Need guidance how to take it forward and make this a successful brand across various cities in U.P/Utt. Kindly suggest/guide.
02 Feb 2015, 10:55am
Hello Avarpreet, it takes a lot of courage to start your own business after doing a job for such a long time. Congratulations on starting your own brand and I wish you all the success for the venture. If I understand correctly, your question is about building the brand name for your venture. Here are my suggestions: First of all, you need to decide on the messages/qualities that you want to associate with your brand. For example, the quality of education or the care of the children at the pre-school or child-friendly staff etc. Then you design the brand elements – logo, name, tagline, colour scheme etc. such that they are simple to remember, easily recognized and conveys the qualities that you want them to. Next you decide upon the communication strategy. You will need to decide where all should your branding visuals and messaging be displayed. It will obviously be there in your pre-school website, and the pre-school itself (signage, stationary, folders, books, etc.) But you also want to promote the brand through different platforms such as magazines, radio, local newspapers, social media, etc. – Basically wherever your potential customers can be reached. Public Relations and Word of Mouth Publicity are two very potent mediums of developing a brand and should be used to your advantage. Finally I would say that brand building is a continuous effort and not a one-time job. You will need to constantly devote time, efforts and energy to first create and then maintain the brand name. Of course, the assumption here is that your business will deliver what the branding is promising to deliver to the customers. Otherwise no amount of resources will be able to sustain the brand name. Best of luck.

hi ishita... I am from Bhopal and saw a business of rented apparels for occasions in Delhi. Trying for the same in Bhopal too.. Can you please suggest the pros & Cons of such business as Bhopal is education hub for young generation and youth wanna look hi-profile in low pay-outs.. suggestions required please...
02 Feb 2015, 08:10am
Hello Adity. As far as the pros of the business are concerned, you have mentioned the biggest point yourself – the young people want to be fashionable at a low cost. Renting fashionable clothes, that they may not afford buying, for special occasions – sounds like a good idea. However challenges like maintenance of the clothes, hygiene issues, mind-set to own clothes rather than rent etc. may crop up. In my perspective, it is more important to understand if there is a market for such a business in Bhopal. In other words, we need to know - are there enough people in Bhopal, who would rent clothes from you at a price that you would rent at, so that you will make a profit? I would suggest that you should try to estimate the market for rented clothes in Bhopal. You can do that in multiple ways. You can conduct a survey of young crowd and find out their thoughts about renting clothes and the price point at which they are willing to rent. You can actually run a pilot with a limited number of clothes and see the response. You can post ads on Facebook or set up a website with a coming soon sign and see how many people register for the upcoming service. While none of these methods are 100% accurate, they will give you a sense of the level of interest in the market for your business and maybe even get an idea of the target segments and price points which you should pursue. That will help you decide if you should start this business. Best of luck.

Hi. I am interested in setting up an online poster store. Online research has not proved to be as helpful as I thought it would be. How can I ascertain that my idea is viable? Please let me know.
29 Jan 2015, 05:06pm
Hello Mahevash, hats off to your entrepreneurial spirit. Your profile says that you are already an entrepreneur and am happy to know that you want to start an online poster store. To ascertain the viability, you need to make a detailed business plan and the cost-revenue-profit analysis for running the business. For being able to make a detailed business plan, you need to know the costs, estimate the revenues and work out the profits. For estimating revenues, you will need to know if your potential customers will pay for your product at the price that you will sell it and the number of such customers. Therefore, you need to do a lot of research about potential customers and their willingness and ability to buy your product. You can do sample surveys, set up stalls at exhibitions to gauge interests, or run pilots with small groups like say – college hostels. On an average, the age group which buys posters is typically between say 13-25 - An age-group where paying capacity is limited. Similarly, detailed study is required on the cost side. An online store is not so much about the website itself but more about the inventory, vendors, timely deliveries, tie-ups with courier services etc. That is where the bulk of your costs are. Also, you need to factor in current and future competition. After studying all the relevant aspects in detail, start putting a number for all the expected costs and estimates revenues – this will give you an idea of the viability. Hope this helps!

If you don't have through knowledge about the product, the technology, the packaging, the market, the customer segments and other such aspects of the business, you will start the business with a disadvantage. In order to fully understand the product and the technology behind it, I would suggest that you connect with an NGO / organization which is working in the area of creating menstrual awareness. 17 Dec 2014, 11:27am
Hello Sunitha, From the question I am not clear if you are asking about pursuing a business around a manufacturing set-up or asking about getting a prototype manufactured. I will answer both the questions briefly here. In case you want to get a prototype manufactured, there are many product design firms which may be able to help you. While Pune is a desgin hub in India, based on where you are living, you can search for design consultants in / close to your city. The National Institute of Design (NID) may also be able to help you. Another place you can go for getting help in product design AND setting up a business is 'business incubators' or accelerators. A business incubator or accelerator is an organization which helps people like you to set up businesses. They will guide you in various aspects of the business like setting up a legal entity, approaching investors, making the to to market strategy, help in promoting the business, help in developing a prototype etc. Also, there is a lot of information available online about starting businesses. Reading online articles will help you in getting a perspective about various aspects of starting a business. So how can i start something of my own and minimum how much i have to invest and how. Sometimes i become very frustrated seeing all my friends settled nicely. Please help me. Hello Priyanka, You are already an entrepreneur! Maybe your scale is small, yes. But there is no reason to be frustrated. You can surely scale-up your business in a planned manner. What you need is more confidence in yourself - and a little bit of planning. I would suggest first decide on what is it that you exactly want to do - launch your design brand, set up an online store, or a retail store etc. Once that is decided, then work out the financial sum that you will need for carrying out the plan. You can then raise funding through the friends and family round. There is no fixed amount for the 'minimum' investment. It depends on the nature of the business and the activities that you want to do. Who knows, maybe you wont even need to borrow funds. But that can be known only after you make a plan first. So get started soon! Best of luck. Feel free to get back to me with more questions.

Hi Ishita, i have passion for cooking. I can cook italian, chinees, Continental, different types if Indian dishes, english desert, different types of cakes, cookies. I wish to utilise my hobby into profession. I need a platform to start. I am not getting what can be the exact way to sell my product. If you can help me to succeed my dream Thanks Chaitali Ghoshal
24 Nov 2014, 03:13am
Chaitali, Congratulations on wanting to be an entrepreneur. I wish you all the best for a very interesting journey ahead. To get started, you have multiple ways. I would suggest you make a small menu and pricing for all the products that want to sell. Start small and scale up later. You can start promoting your services through small forums like neighbourhoods, friends of friends, women's forum on facebook etc. Once you start getting these small orders, it will give you an idea of what it takes to get into the food business. How to minimize wastage, how to save time, greater understanding of whats more profitable, how many helpers do you need, which dishes sell more etc. Once you learn all these trade secrets, then scale up and start advertising through larger means such as flyers in newspapers, tie-up with offices to provide boutique lunches, cater for events like birthday parties etc. It would be great to partner with say event planners etc. to get good business. They can recommend your services for catering / baking for the events they are planning. There are some websites as well where you can register yourself and attract business. Depending on your revenues and scale, you can choose to advertise online or offline There can be no exact way to sell. You will have to figure out who is your client and then think of the means to reach out to him. For e.g. if you just want to make cakes for birthday parties, you should be reaching out to moms who arrange the parties. Which will need a different means of selling than if you are planning to sell health lunches for busy executives. So best of luck! Keep me posted on your progress.

Hi Ishita Ma'am. I'm currently pursuing B.Tech from IIT-Delhi in my 3rd year. I have a start-up running by the name of Sarthy. Hey Richa, You have a world of options. You can get back to same industry that you were already working in or you can use this opportunity to change your industry and join a sector other than you were working with. In case you need more time for home, you can also think of flexitime jobs. To get started, it would be a good idea to update your skills, learn about whats the latest in the industry that you want to work with, see what are the opportunities, start visiting events and conferences for that sector and keep yourself updated with the current happenings. That will surely help you when you start appearing for interviews. You also have the opportunity to start your own business and be an entrepreneur. So think about what interests you, dig more about that field, update yourself and take the plunge :)

Hello Ma'am, Kanika here from New Delhi Hope you are doing good!!, I am writing this note to you asking for you guidance. I am working with a leading travel n tourism company & i dream to be an entrepreneur one day.I am flexible with carrier options. I want you to please help me setting up. Looking forward to hear from you. Thanks Kanika kanika.grover1@gmail.com

Hello Kanika, I applaud your dream to be an entrepreneur. For being an entrepreneur, the first thing that you need is a business idea. Once you have an idea about a product or service that you will sell, you need to answer a very important question - why will the potential client buy this product / service from you and not anyone else. If you are able to answer this question satisfactorily, then start spending time thinking about other aspects of running the business. For example, who all can be the potential customers, how will you source, what kind of team will you hire, online vs offline business, what other resources will be required, so on and so forth. Finally start putting a cost to all your planning. Once you have spent time, thinking about all these issues, you will have a detailed understanding of your own potential business, its practicality and the challenges it will pose. This clarity of thought will really help you move forward and actually get started with your business.

Hi Ishita,I'm a freelancing Architect. I'm a mother of two kids. My intention is to start an architectural firm along with an interior decor showroom .My utmost interest is the interior showroom with exclusive products. But I've no clue of how to start a showroom and I also need guidance on how to attract more clients as an architect to start a firm . Pls give me valuable ideas to help me start my own firm very soon . Thank you
21 Jul 2014, 10:49am
Hello Divya, I applaud your entrepreneurial spirit and the fact that you are dreaming big. An architectural firm clubbed with an interior decor showroom sounds like a cool idea. But in my opinion, while related, running an architectural firm and running a showroom requires two very different skill sets. On the showroom front, managing the vendors, pricing, getting the foot falls, after sales service etc. will be important. All the aspects of managing retail store will come in. While in case of the architectural firm, managing client expectations, staff, deadlines will be the challenges. If you start with both of them, you may spread yourself too thin and not be able to devote enough attention and/or investment to both. Since you are also a mother of two kids, you will need to keep in mind your time restrictions, if any. I suggest start with one of the two, for example - launch the architectural firm whose office may also have space for display of sample products (rather than a full-fledged showroom) and then as you grow, the showroom can also grow. Alternatively, if you are able to partner with another architect or some friend, who can manage one of two parts of the business, then it may be possible to do both at the same time. In order to attract clients, you will need to promote your business after you set up a firm. You can use various platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Newspaper articles, Ads in magazines etc. to promote your business. The choice of the medium and the method of the promotion will depend upon your budget and the type of audience you want to reach. Since you are a free lancer architect, I am sure you will have your prior work which you can showcase. Word of mouth works very well in such businesses. Partnering with agencies which sell related products / services may result in generating leads for business. A good way to get started may be launching your firm in a exhibition / conference / expo related to your area. You can consider taking up a stall in any such exhibition where you are expecting potential clients to attend. while you have not mentioned whats your specialization in architecture, it would be awesome if you are able to develop a niche area for designing that can become your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)

Hello Ishita, i makes nice designer cakes from home which is a rented appartment. We shifted to this appartment 6 months ago. The society is very strict so i have almost stopped baking. Is anyone allowed to do small home business?
17 Jul 2014, 07:17am
Hello Prema, I am surprised to know that your society has an issue with your baking - an activity which does not disturb any other resident in whatsoever way. However, if there is any kind of a rule, bye-law or law of the local, state or central government, which restraints you from doing your business from your house, I strongly recommend that you look for some other place for baking. You will have to check about this from your society or a lawyer as this may differ from place to place and city to city. I do know that there are certain residential areas where commerical offices are not allowed. Maybe your apartment is also in such an area.

Hello ishita, I want to start a business of offering stationery and other equipments for left handed children and adults. I have procured a few samples from abroad and also have met with local producers who can help me develop this product. I need funding to push this into the market. Please advice how can I create awareness and find vc's to fund my project. Best regards Kanika
05 Jun 2014, 01:32pm
Hello Kanika, Equipment for the left handed sounds like an excellent idea. However, it would be prudent to connect with some left handed individuals or moms of left handed children and validate the products that you want to sell. Maybe they suggest some changes in the products, which may want to incorporate before you start the production. As far as funding is concerned, VCs are not your best bet. Typically VCs fund businesses which are at a more mature stage. The first round of funding typically comes from a friends and family round. Your own savings, credit from suppliers, advances from potential customers, can also help in extending the much needed working capital. Start small and then gradually build up the business as the revenues come in. Some business incubators or accelerators also help in funding of scalable and profitable business ideas.

Hi I want to sell Projects Especially Those for students in Class 10th and 12th , How should I Market This ?
25 May 2014, 06:08am
Hello Richa, Not sure what you mean by sell Projects. I am assuming that these are academic projects which students of class 10th and 12th have to do. I am not even sure as to how will you do projects for them. With my limited understanding of the product, I will try to answer your question. I would suggest that you first do a pilot study and find out there is a market for this or not. So maybe you can approach say 50-100 students of class 10/12 and find out if they will buy your projects and if yes then what is it that they will pay for it. Moreover, in case of students, often parents are also involved in the decisions. So you should also speak to parents of these kids to know their opinion. This will also help you understand your target market well. After that you need to make the right communication material and send it all the places where your target market can see it like tuition classes, coffee shops, popular book shops like Crosswords etc. Having an online presence on Facebook and your own website will definitely help - You can also think about Facebook advertising which will help you reach out to specific target markets that you want to reach. Their are various other things you can do like partner with tuition classes or dance classes - where this young crowd goes.

I have a two years kid and it is very difficult to pursue with a full time office job.So please guide me how can I move forward in life without sacrificing my career. Looking forward to hear from you. Regards,
10 May 2014, 11:11am
Hello Kriti, Appreciate your thinking. Good to know that you want to pursue your career even after having kids. That is very important for your personal growth. However maintaining a work-life balance is also equally important. If you don't want to pursue a full-time job, there are many options for you. You can look for a part-time job or a flexi-timing job or a work from home profile. Perhaps Fleximoms can help you with searching such a job. A lot of companies these days have job profiles which they actually prefer to outsource to part-time or work from home consultants as it cuts down their costs. Another option is to start your own business which gives you the ability to manage your own working hours. However, starting a business comes with many other issues as well - like no fixed income till the business picks up, lot of time and effort required in the initial phases, and so on. So you will have to weigh your options carefully and take a decision based on the priorities in life.

Hello Juhi, Cheers to your entrepreneurial spirit! But I would like to caution you that working for a BPO and starting a BPO yourself are two different things. While you haven't mentioned how long was your experience and in what areas but I am sure you understand you will need a lot of marketing, organizational, administrative skills for setting up a BPO. I would suggest - one that you get a partner. Single founders are not preferred by investors - in case you want funding. Secondly, make a detailed business plan. You can get the template of a business plan on the internet. This will help you think through a lot of challenges that you will face in setting up the BPO. There are consultants / companies who can help you in setting up the BPO. It would be a good idea to get in touch with them and explore possibilities

Hi Ishita....I am Deepti. I have 5 years of experience in HR Department worked in reputed MNC (TCS) I took a break from work since i was on my family way. Now i want to start again my career. I have keen interest in setting up my own business of clothes targeting age group as 21 to 30 years, but have no experience for it. I just want to start with retailing of the product and not manufacture. Please guide me in sourcing the manufacturers and making a strategy to sell the products.
02 May 2014, 11:02am
Hello Deepti The question you are asking is very broad and a brief answer here will not do justice to your question. But here's what I will say. A clothes retailing business is not just about sourcing the manufacturers and selling - there is a lot more which goes in the background - managing the vendors, inventory, pricing, location of your shop, ambiance, type of clothes, staff, advertisement, unsold clothes etc. If you are starting your own enterprise, its important to have a basic understanding of the market and how the business works. So if you have no experience in the area of clothes, either you team up with someone who understands the sector well or you think of a business which you understand well. While I am not saying that you can't learn all these things yourself, just that it will cost you a lot of time, money and efforts. What you can also do is extensively research the sector, understand the norms of the business (say for e.g. credit cycles, credit risks, margin percentages etc.) and only after fully understanding it, make any investment into it or take a decision if you want to go ahead in this field.

I know there are lot of conditions but please help..
01 May 2014, 08:01am
Hey Shilpa, This is a question you can answer better than me. You need to list down your priorities and decide accordingly. In my opinion, women should engage in some activity / work even after they have kids. That is important for your personal growth. However maintaining a work-life balance is also equally important. So ideally you should do something which keeps you busy, earns you some money yet at the same time, leaves you enough time to take care of the kids. There are multiple options for you. If you can find a full time job with easy hours, go for it. You can look for a part-time job or a flexi-timing job or a work from home profile. But looking at your experience and passion, I would suggest a good idea would be to start your own design business where you can do multiple things - design items for others, sell crafts raw material, take classes etc. Doing a business from home gives you the flexibility to take care of the baby and work when convenient for you. Moreover, when the baby is grown up, you can devote full time to your business and scale it up and take it to the next level. So go ahead, listen to your heart and do what it says :)

I have worked as author and editor with various publishers like Viva books, Dhanpat rai and Arya publications for over 7 years. I want to start my own business. I have two models in my mind - one is personalised corporate gifting and other is online sale of women sports wear and sports accessories. I want to import the gifts from China, Hong Kong, etc. Please advise how to take it forward.
30 Apr 2014, 03:06am
Hello Shweta, Other things remaining equal, the best way to decide between both the models is 1) think which is the bigger problem in the market - Which problem has a greater no. of customers for whom you can offer a solution through you business. We want to choose a solution which has larger demand in the market 2) think about which one of them are you better equipped to manage. For example, online sports shop for women is not just about the website. It is more about sourcing the clothes, branding, robust delivery mechanism, COD issues, returns, inventory management, search engine optimization, etc. On the other hand, personalized corporate gifting business will have its own challenges like marketing to corporations, quality of products, delivery, chasing clients for payments, import laws, etc. We want to choose the model where you (or your partner) have the expertise to run the show. I would suggest you answer both these questions and based on that, do a small pilot. That should help you decide.

I also have a facebook web page of my home based business with the name of The Chocofills.
13 Mar 2014, 12:57pm
Well Shilpa you first have to decide what is it that is closest to your heart. Whether it is travel or hiring or baking. Whether you start a business or take up a job, you should be passionate about the area that you work in. Moreover, once you start one business focus on that only instead of trying multiple things. Also, by starting The Chocofills you have already started your own business ? then why the confusion of travel agent, HR? Just work on expanding The Chocofills. This business does not typically require a lot of investment apart from buying the baking equipment and advertising. You will need to spend money to promote your business which you could do through various online and offline means such as – pamphlets, ads in local magazines, Facebook advertising, etc. So you can decide the monthly advertisement budget based on what you are comfortable in spending. There is no fixed amount that you need to invest. Who all can you cater to – well there is no dearth of possibilities. Let’s look at some examples – you can cater to individuals, large events/parties, selling through a tie-up with some shop, selling through exhibitions etc. I would suggest that you begin small initially and take orders which are small in size. Once you gain the experience and get a grip on the business, then you can start expanding and start taking larger orders. Once the business has grown sufficiently which enables you to hire helpers, delivery staff etc. then you can start taking in much larger orders. Hope I have been able to answer your questions. Feel free to get back if you have more questions.

18 Feb 2014, 03:29pm
Hi Gauri, I am answering your question with reference to money required to start a business and not money in your bank. That's because apart from your personal savings you can also think about borrowing from friends and family. In an ideal case, when you are starting a business you should arrange for enough capital which can pay for all the expenses of the business till the business starts making revenues. For example lets say you estimate that it will take you 3 months to build your team, product offerings, marketing the services, start speaking with clients etc. and the revenues from the clients are likely to start coming in only from the 4th month. Moreover the initial revenues may not be enough to bear the costs of the business. So you need to contribute capital for another 2 months. Therefore you should aim to have adequate money which will take care of the expenses of the businesses till it becomes self-sustaining (or for 6 months time in the example we have taken). If you are planning to take funding from external sources like banks or angel investors, you need enough money to take the business to a level where external investors can come in. It is also prudent to have 1-3 months' worth of capital as cushion just in case you are not able to meet your target revenues and/or your projections about your costs and revenues are very different from reality. Suggest you over-budget your costs and take a pessimistic view of your revenues while making the financial projections.

Could you please guide me in the how I can go about it and the possible ground work needed to take the next steps. Thanks in advance. Regards, Shivani

Hi Ishita, We are a Bangalore based education company since 2007 and expert at developing Maths and English content for early education from 4 to 12 years of age. We started www.10on10.in to fight the phobia of Mathematics among the student. We did a comprehensive research why student has fear for Maths though it is very critical subject no matter what career a student chooses. Our research shows that the 90% student fails in Maths or they do not like Maths as a subject. So the potential of our product is huge and for your information over 100,000 students have benefited from our product and that too in 260 cities of India and from last year we are operating in Australia as well. The breadth of our reach is very large but we could not penetrate the depth in customer reach. As we were operating since last year as a on line selling company and the word of mouth bringing the customer to our website and enrolled to our program and we used to deliver our uniquely designed work book month on month at customer door step as our program is "AFTER SCHOOL AT HOME PROGRAM". From this year we want to increase our depth in customer reach, we took a decision to bring on board (on commission based) self driven individual who wants to work in the education sector to bring a better change in it. We found your website a better fit in for our requirement. We posted the ad and we got quality and quantity leads in no time and one turned up as well. But the problem is the leads we got from www.sheroes.in they are convinced of our product but they do not want to work as it is a sale kind of work and they all are looking for content developing, doing market research and a fixed salary. Now would you please suggest what I need to do to reach to the right candidate. I tried to explain to the best of my knowledge and if you want any further details please feel to reach out. I will forward you the brochure explaining everything in details. Chandan singh Tel- 8431635088 Email- chandan@10on10.in

There are other stuff like chocolate making, cooking, etc that I am passionate about. But I am not sure how to convert my passion in to a full time income generating profession. Can you advise me on the same.
