Sarah asked

Hi Harika, how are you? My name is Sarah and I am the executive director of the Nanubhai Education Foundation, an NGO based in Gujarat and Rajasthan. We send SC/ST girls to college. Now, we are trying to develop programs to help the girls once they have graduated. I am trying to find SHEROES mentors that we can work with to develop relationships with our graduates as well as possibly some job skill training programs in future. If you are interested, please email me at info@nanubhai.org.
01 Dec 2016, 02:13am
Dear Sarah, I must congratulate you on the wonderful work you are doing! I would be interested in partnering with the NGO. My speciality lies in life coaching, personality development, image management, verbal and non verbal communication, and preparing individuals for interviews etc. I work in the area of soft skills. Job Skill training on the other hand are hard, technical skills for which you may need to designate a different mentor. Let me know if we can collaborate in the areas that I work Thanks and warm regards, Harika

Hello ma'am, Due to keen interest in psychology I have recently completed M.Sc. Industrial/Organizational from bangalore Univ. (rank holder in the age of 38 yrs). I had to quit teaching job in 2010. I am a single parent now and looking for work. I am quite unhappy for no openings in Chandigarh in any field for I/O psychologists. I am open to travelling but can not move out of Chandigarh till the end of 2017. Please suggest what may work best for me in current scenario. I am working as an education Coach across 3 states and I am quite comfortable in public speaking. Thank you in advance! -Suman
29 Nov 2016, 08:46pm
Dear Suman, Thank you for writing in. I hear and understand the challenge you are facing. Since you cannot move out of Chandigarh for another year and do have a teaching/education background, I would suggest you look at openings with private post graduate and diploma institutes in Chandigarh, They are always looking for teachers. You may also want to explore counselling jobs at educational institutes, inviting prospective candidates. Sheroes also regularly posts such openings. Look both in the jobs from home (then you are not tied down by location) as well as listings for Chandigarh. Click on this link for possible options. https://sheroes.in/jobs/search/page:1?q=chandigarh%20 All the very best. May strength be with you. Warm regards Harika

Hi Harika , I have been the headmistress of a public school in greater noida for 4 yrs . Unfortunately , I lost my husband and had to switch for an IT job where he used to work ( finance being the reason) . It has been one and a half year working in Oracle , but I am still struggling to survive as its not my cup of tea . Can you please suggest me the way out ?
02 Nov 2016, 01:05pm
Dear Bulbul, Thank you for writing in. Since you are at Oracle for financial considerations and the company is obviously committed to help you, why don't you ask for a shift of department? They would have an HR department. Maybe you could be transferred to an HR or training and development job profile which would be easier on you.Else ask for some training to be able to your current job better. You must talk to the company. Communication is very important. I am sure they can rework your job role or help you do the existing one with greater ease. Hope that helps. All the best Warm regards Harika

I am currently on a sabbatical and hope to start up on my own as a soft skill consultant. Appreciate your guidance.

Hello Harika, I am working as a senior software engineer with 6 years of experience. I am married and have a daughter who is 2 years old. In my current job I find it hard to manage work-life balance which in turn leaves me frustrated. My job is demanding and requires constant learning. I see very few girls at senior position in my profession. At times I think of switching my job profile but I donot know how to start. I am also open for starting my own business but need guidance. How should I go about balancing my life and how should I decide what job profile/ business venture should be good for me?
02 Aug 2016, 05:16am
Thank you for writing in Rakhi. Becoming an entrepreneur is exciting. However benefits that accrue are proportional to the effort and time put in to procure business. The field of training is a good option for someone like you. It requires initial investment to get certified in your chosen area of specialization, after that since there is no real capital investment involved it is an easier business. You can be a freelance trainer, get employed with a company in the L&D department or then take up a full time or part time employment with a Training Company. I think this is an option you can explore. Hope this helps. Warm regards, ,Harika

Hi Harika, post sabatical i have recently certified myself as a Trainer...my core is behavioural skills, customer service skills what are some ways to kick start my league in the field of training?
12 Jul 2016, 10:47am
Thanks for writing in Kavita. It is good at this stage to take on as many assignments as you can get, both paid and unpaid to build your experience and training repertoire. You may look at joining a training company and shadow existing trainers to learn from them as well. Further being part of a training set up will enable you to get work faster. You must also keep meeting people and letting them know what you do. Networking and business development are key to your success. Ask to train at set ups where friends and family maybe owners or in positions that will help you get a chance to perform. Also look at the option of going back to the place you took a sabbatical from to offer your services as a trainer. They know you and your work and will most likely give you an opportunity in your new role as a trainer. Hope this is helpful. All the very best. Warm regards, Harika

Thank you Smita for writing in. Yes as a soft skills trainer, you can have the option of flexi time. Depending on where you are placed, you may look at government aided as well as private organizations that offer soft skills training programs. If you have a psychology background, NCERT is a very good option. Else courses that certify you through ISTD, NABET, or IGNOU. Thank you Swathi for writing in.As your education and experience is in the technology space, maybe that is the first place you should look at. It will all come back to you once you put your mind to it. Like cycling or driving, we really dont forget what we have learnt from education as well as experience. There are partime or work from home options that Sheroes lists regularly. You will definitely find something that works for you. https://sheroes.in/jobs/search/skill/location/employment-type/work-from-home/career-level/company/page:1 However is this is the time you feel you want to upskill or invest in educating yourself in something else that you are passionate about, that is another option you could explore. You can then pursue a meaningful career in your area of interest and all the knowledge will be fresh in your mind. Hope this helps. All the very best to you.

Sonia asked

Hi Monika, I was working as a Customer Experience Coach (Quality Auditor cum trainer) in Dell Technical Support for 8+ years. After all these years, I realized that my strengths lied in training and content development. Though I have not done any certifications in it but I have a passion for T&D. I don't know how to find right opportunities given that I cannot do night shifts due to my motherly commitments. Please help me find a way. I am looking for a fruitful career in work from home.

Hi Sonia, thanks for writing in. You mention two diverse areas of expertise - content development and training. As I understand, you want to concentrate on the training and development area. Yes a certification is always helpful in terms of adding credibility, enhancing your skill set, as well as the ability to systematically apply the experience you have gathered. You could enrol in full or part time Train the Trainer courses offered by various organizations depending on the budget you have. You will then be able to offer your services as a freelance trainer to corporates. Perhaps start with the IT space and maybe go back to the organization you worked with to request for opportunities to train staff. All companies now have L&D budgets but it will require time and effort on your part, to do business development. You will need to spend time networking to get the business before you can train. The option I would suggest is to apply to training companies and offer your services as a part time trainer. Hope this helps. All the best! Warm regards, Harika

Hi Monika. Thank you for writing in. Making a change from your field of expertise can be challenging. So the questions you need to ask yourself are: -Why do you want to shift? -Do you feel that it is better suited for your personality? -Are you being offered a job in the digital marketing space, which is causing you to consider it? -Does this possible shift come with the promise of better compensation? -Do you not feel challenged/motivated enough in your current job or nature of job? Shifting course is not a bad thing, but you will need to invest in it and upgrade or acquire new skills. If you are one who enjoys challenges and learning as well as wants increased people interaction, then do consider it. But do think through the reasons motivating you to opt for the change.

Thank you for writing in. Yes getting back into a desired work space can be a challenge. Have you looked at approaching training companies in Noida? If you are bound by location, I would suggest you look at options other than corporates, atleast in the interim. Perhaps a smaller setup or coaching school. It is important to get back into the workforce even if the profile is not ideal. This will allow you to be gainfully employed and keep looking for opportunities that are better suited for you, while in a job. Hope that helps. Regards,
