Shilpa asked

Hi Ankitaa..I am working for an automotive company since the past 6 years and I have been doing software requirements analysis, design, coding and testing in the embedded domain. I have an 8 month old baby now. I got back to work 2 months ago after my maternity leave. I do find my work interesting but there is always a part of me which keeps wondering whether I should stay away from my baby for this. Lately I have been getting interested in writing and so was thinking about switching to a career of content writing and digital marketing. Since you are working in a similar area, thought of seeking your advice on how do I get started. How will I be able to learn about these areas and also whether it is advisable to switch into a different career path now? I want to look into work from home option to manage both family and work, but I am worried about a reduction in my pay. I hope to write a novel some day too, just like you :) Hope to hear from you soon..

Hi Shilpa, thanks for your message. My apologies for a delayed response but I had been traveling so couldn't get to answer you earlier. I totally understand your dilemma about questioning your work that pays you but keeps you away from your baby. My own daughter is almost 4 but even now I hate to step away from her for meetings and other official work. Having said that, you do have to understand the pay is not that good in content writing, though it's slightly better in digital marketing. And for beginners, it's even worse. I don't want to scare you but just want to give you a real world view. Moreover, content writing and digital marketing are two different worlds. Content writing can be a digital marketing strategy, but digital marketing is a vast field in itself, so if you're just starting out, you need to decide which way to go - content writing or some other digital marketing field like social media, website, etc. I started in content writing and web development in sync since writing was one of my passions (still is!) and I was into programming languages due to my degree in Computer Engineering. As I moved through the cycles of my career, I started adding more digital marketing strategies like SEO, social media, branding, etc. to my portfolio and that's how I earned my title of a Digital Marketing Strategist that I use today. I think it took me 3-4 years to all the aspects to my portfolio, and since then I've been honing my skills with different projects. What I'm trying to say is you will have to do your research and pick a field, don't try to get into everything all at once - you'll just stretch yourself too thin. Connect with me on LinkedIn and we can take this conversation further. Thanks! (P.S. I should have written my novel by now but I'm still stuck at Chapter 1 because I just don't find the time between my baby, husband, family, friends, and of course work. If you want to write a novel, write now, focus on it now because once you're working from home, you won't find the time for a novel. I've learnt this the hard way!)

Hi Ankita,\n\nFirst of all,....your profile is very impressive:-). one of the reasons to seek your guidance.\n\nWell,...Myself Ashwini, I am a B.E graduate and have 4.5 years of IT experience\n(Manual Testing field). I am on break from 2011 Aug to raise family. Now, everything seems to be slowly settling down at home w.r.t kids,I am planning to restart my career. \nI want to start a fresh and I found this Digital marketing interesting.\nI planned to take some online courses/clear certifications and then to look \nfor a job as i have very minimal level of knowledge on DM .. \n\nSo I need some guidance from you as you are expertise in this.\n1.Whether i can make use of my previous exp in manual testing to get job in DM field? cz i dont want to undersell myself by joining as intern/fresher for less salary (cz its not good for any type of career growth)\n2.if at all my experience helps in DM, on which module of DM I should concentrate more.\n\nfyi..\n1.I created a brand page on FB "Toyzkart" to help my family business (wooden toys) in 2014.\nand also I am managing it, like writing description, taking pix of Products, uploading photos, interacting with customers etc\nrest everything is taken care by my other family members.this works needs half day/week..and I am not earning anything here.its sort of help. Cant be highlighted in c.v to get job as this page is created from a business(very small)perspective, not for applying job.\nwhy i mentioned this here is to tell that i worked on something related to DM :-)\n2.And also I want to work full time, at-least part time..I know we can do freelancing/wfh to gain experience and then try for full time. But I dont want to gain experience by WFH. cz its not comfortable with two kids here!!\nIt would be really helpful if you make some time to respond to my message to guide in my career path.
01 Jun 2017, 06:14pm
Thank you, Ashwini, for your kind words. I hope whatever little experience I have will be helpful in advising you with your situation. To keep it short, start with social media marketing, since you've already had a taste of what it involves. Read up on social media marketing on blogs by Buffer, Hootsuite, HubSpot and so on to learn more about it. And then if you're into coding, you can bring on more digital marketing strategies into your portfolio. I started with content writing and website development, simply because I was passionate about it. So first thing is you ask if you're really satisfied with social media marketing. And then go on about it. You can search for WFH jobs here on Sheroes, and outside too. Also, make sure you update your LinkedIn profile updated with your experiences, no matter how little or insignificant it might seem to you at this time. I myself had taken many small projects when I was just starting out, which unfortunately I didn't add to my portfolio at the right time, and I don't want that to happen to you. It's better to have some experience than no experience at all. So always keep your profile updated. I work 40 hours per week from home with a 3-year-old in tow, so I can very well understand the limitations of working from home. But it IS possible. If I can do it, so can you. And lastly, I can't comment on your manual testing field because truthfully speaking, I don't understand if there can be any relation between that and digital marketing because I am simply not familiar with it. So I've refrained from commenting on it. However, you should send out feelers to your network, people you knew from your old job(s) that you are now into Digital marketing and could really use their help in getting back to your career. Surprisingly, a lot of people are willing to help, if you ask nicely. For further questions, please do not hesitate to email me at agd at anksimage dot com. Thank you!

08 May 2017, 06:22pm
Hi Shikha, have you browsed through the job board here on Sheroes? It will give you an idea which jobs you can handle in a work-from-home set-up in sales operations management. Just in case you don't see any available positions in a work-from-home or remote location set up, you can browse more to find jobs that can fit into your lifestyle. Utilise the job board here, and then you can understand what you can do and can't do. I'm not familiar with sales operations management, so I can't really advise on the positions available in that field, but I can say that since you have 16+ years of experience, it will only do good for you. Just make sure you have a nice profile set up here, as well as a good resume at hand to send over whenever someone requests one. Also, become more active on LinkedIn, and let your old colleagues know you are looking for new opportunities. I work from home exclusively, so I know you can do it too. Good luck :)

Hi Pallavi, the first thing you have to do is decide do you want to step out of the house for work, or work from home? Then based on what you choose, you have to get online and look for available positions in different fields that interest you. You have to research if you're eligible for the jobs you like, whether corporate office jobs, work from home jobs, or a mix of both (yes, those are available too!). To get started, you can look up jobs here on Sheroes to get an idea of what field you want to get into. You said no BPO, so take some time to figure out where you can fit your skills and personality to become financially independent. For any further queries, just drop me a line here, whenever you can. 02 May 2017, 04:33pm
Hi Anu, the first thing you have to decide is where you want to work - which field. Then you have to find out if there exists a work-from-home option in that field. I got a lot of jobs through Sheroes when I was starting out, and based on the quality of your work and personality, you can branch into more jobs through good word of mouth marketing. So first decide what you want to work as from home. And then start applying. And remember to follow up. Always. A little persistence demonstrates your willingness for the job. It might take a day or months to bag your first job here, but set aside a few hours daily to make sure you do bag a few to get started. Good luck :)

Whenever i want to apply for some they ask for current experience in that particular field. Please guide me as i am very much confused.\nLata\n
26 Apr 2017, 01:11pm
Hi Lata, don't be disheartened. I understand your situation. You just have to be patient and keep trying. Why don't you start applying to Java and Hadoop work-from-home jobs right here in Sheroes? I am not sure about the Indian freelancing sites, but I have seen Hadoop work-from-home positions in Freelancer, Upwork, etc. freelancing websites - so have a look and apply to the relevant positions. Once you start from somewhere, you will get a better idea if you want to work part time, or full time. Work from home is also either part time - 10-20 hours a week - or full time - 30-40 hours a week. I'm a full time work from home entrepreneur and sometimes my work hours go beyond 40 hours a week. It all depends on how much work you are picking up. I know you are talented, given the background you've shared with me. Just don't lose hope and never stop trying. Drop me a line whenever you need any words of encouragement. Good luck :)

Google Search takes time. You have spend time figuring out which ones to apply, and which to ignore. That will take time. Sorry to say this but if you can't find any suitable relevant jobs in Sheroes, then Google Search is the only other way. I'm not familiar with data entry jobs, but I am well acquainted with the job search process. Take some time out every day from your schedule to shortlist the jobs where you want to apply after browsing through the results you get on Google search. That's pretty much what I do, and though it is quite time consuming, it does yield results. So please go ahead.

21 Apr 2017, 08:25am
Hi Durga, sorry for the late response. I think there is some confusion here - work from home is not a job in itself, it's a way of working. Some people go to an office, some work from home, while others strike a balance between office days and work-from-home days at their jobs. Your success depends on what you choose to do and how well you can do it. There are many jobs available in the work-from-home category right here in Sheroes, or you can sign up on freelancing websites for relevant topics like content writing, programming, virtual assistant, and so on to get started. Do keep in mind working from home is not easy - it has a whole different set of cons, so please make sure you will be able to work. And whatever line of work you choose, choose what you are passionate about. If you love doing your job, success will come automatically as you grow better at it. 05 Apr 2017, 02:47pm
Hi Poonam, congratulations on your wedding! It's been 2 months only into marriage, so are you ready to get into working from home? Do you think you will be able to set aside at least 20-30 hours of work time every week? Working from home also means you won't have time for household chores, cooking, shopping, entertaining guests during work hours, and the list can go on. I'm not trying to scare you, I'm just giving you a reality check. Working from home is not easy. In fact, it has too many distractions as compared to working in a traditional workplace setup. So review your options carefully. Now if you're really sure about this, you can start by defining the field of your work. Where do you want to work in? Look here in Sheroes and outside online on the kind of WFH jobs available - what are the requirements?\n what is the pay? are you equipped to take on any of the available positions? Answer these questions, and then start applying to relevant jobs here on Sheroes, or you can Google and apply for relevant WFH jobs outside of Sheroes. This was the process to get started. But do remember that like in any other job search, you need patience here as well. And persistence too. Once you apply and have any contact information for that particular job, be sure to follow-up if you don't hear from them. If you are selected, then well and good, if not, do insist to know why you were not the chosen one. Eventually you will find the job where you will be the chosen one. Good luck :)

Hi Sushma, thanks for connecting with me. Here are my answers to your queries - (1) I am a Digital Marketing Strategist, which means I'm working in Website Design, Website Development, Social Media Management, Social Media Optimisation, Search Engine Optimisation, Content Writing and Content Development. Some projects require all these modules, while some projects need one or two. Basically I promise the client to give her more online visibility, more brand recognition and engagement, and more hits to her website. I work with clients in India and USA. (2) I am technically a Computer Engineer, having graduated from the Michigan Tech University in USA, so I am well versed in coding and programming. Writing is something I developed as a passion and is now a source of income. There are many diplomas and certifications available for the different modules of Digital Marketing I practice but I have none, other than the successful ROI reports I share with my clients. (3) To be frank, I have no clue about the work-from-home opportunities for someone with such a high degree in Microbiology, but you never know unless you try, so Google for your dream job. Look at the open positions available - are any of those work from home? Are there any positions work from home? If Microbiology doesn't give you a career, maybe there's something else you can try on your own. I got my first job upon graduation as a Business Reporting consultant, which means I didn't have any training and minimal knowledge of this field. So I took up training and after 3 months, I took the necessary exams to become a certified Business Intelligence Consultant and Master. So look for opportunities you feel you can fit in. Rashmi asked

Hi Ankita,\nI am Rashmi Shukla I have been working in KPO companies into US Healthcare profile for past 4 years ,recently I got married and now I am planning for baby after an year but problem is that there is no one to take care of my baby if I do so ,So could you please suggest me what would be best job profile which I can pursue and manage home with baby at least for 3-5years .\nThanks!
03 Apr 2017, 02:09am
Hi Rashmi,\n\nThanks for connecting with me here. I completely understand your situation, having been through this dilemma myself. This is one of the main reasons I choose to be a WFH worker, even when I get lucrative offers regularly to join an office setup. My daughter is 3 and I can't bear to leave her in someone else's hands. So I get it. \n\nFirst, talk to your current company for work from home opportunities. Maybe they can help you - you'd never know until you ask. So first try that.\n\nSecond, browse through Sheroes and other freelancing sites to find open WFH positions that will fit your profile. Connect with these people and snag projects. You can start with simple projects that take a few days and then as you build your confidence, you can move on to monthly retainer positions.\n\nRegarding your baby, create a workspace where you can be with your baby. Get ideas online. In my office, one corner is dedicated to my daughter so she can be with me while I'm working. And you have to start talking early to your baby about your work. My daughter is 3 but she realizes I need to work every day, except Sundays. If someone comes into my office when I'm working, she is the first one to tell all that "Mamma is working". So start talking to your baby early about your work. Your baby will become your biggest supporter. Keep lots of books available and toys too. And manage your time efficiently so that you don't feel you're ignoring your work or your baby. There are times when my baby sits on my table colouring Peppa Pig or Pocoyo, and I'll be telling her to choose the right colors while I code in PHP. So be prepared to multitask, to the extreme.\n\nI can go on with stories like this, but the main point here is you can work with your baby in tow. Nothing is impossible. You don't need anyone else, except maybe a couple of maids who can take care of cooking and housekeeping (though you have to be vigilant on them too!)\n\nDrop me a line, if you have any questions.\n\nThanks! \nAnkitaa

Hi Manisha,\n\nI am Shilpa Bakka, having more than 12 Years of experience in IT industry. Currently I am working with Cerner Healthcare Services as a Manager. I am looking for job since last 6 months though continuity is not there. However, I am unable to crack any interviews. I have hardly attended 4 interviews and received very few calls. I need your guidance and support to understand and address reason why I am unable to get into new job. I am considered one of the best employees in my current organization. The reason why I ma looking for new job is the location of my office from home. Any suggestions in this regard are welcome.\n\nThank you,\nShilpa

Hi Shilpa, I think you posted on the wrong profile. I'm Ankitaa, not Manisha. Maybe you can post this question on Manisha's profile to get her insight. But since I've come across your question, let me share with you something - always follow-up on your interviews to know what you did right and what went wrong. Many people shy away from this, and that's a huge loss. Be brazen about it - ask them outright to know your highs and lows from their perspectives. If an interviewer dodges your question, be earnest about it and ask it outright. Again. I've seen this work with other mentees of mine. They are brilliant professionals who get stuck in interviews. They don't follow up because they want to offend anyone, but I say, be persistent. You've not been selected, so what have you got to lose, right? But be polite about it. And then once you have their reasons for not choosing you, work on those. I can help you more, if you'd like. Thanks!

Hi, I am working for a homes magazine as an Editorial Coordinator & Indian Researcher for international lift stories. I am MBA-HR and persuing my PG diploma in Folklore & cultural studies. I want to work from home now. Pls suggest me something
15 Mar 2017, 03:40pm
Hi Rinaa, thanks for asking me this question. For work-from-home positions, why don't you start where you're already working? Maybe your homes magazine has work-from-home job opportunities you can apply for? Next, choose your line of work. A good way to do this is by looking at the work-from-home positions available here on Sheroes. You can search this on freelancing sites too. Put some time every day to look at what positions are available, what skills are needed, and which positions are in high demand. This should get you an idea of what you can work on, given that work-from-home opportunities are already so limited. Once you've shortlisted the different work options, look up the pay for each. Remember freelancers are always paid less than average when they are starting out, and work-from-home freelancers even less. So prepared for that financial bite. And now you know what your work can be plus what pay you can expect from this new line of work. To make this happen, apply on relevant jobs anywhere and everywhere. Follow-up in a non-spammy manner. And don't underestimate the power of networking on LinkedIn. Use it to your full advantage. With a little persistence and lots of patience, you should be on your new work-from-home soon. I'll be on standby to support you in this endeavor. Good luck :)

Dear Ankitaa, I read about, how you struggle in your life to get achievement. Really inspire me. I am also career breaker for some personal issue. Now everything is fine. I have done my MCA in 2007. I have 3 years of experience in two different field i.e IT Software and Academic. Now I want to again restart my career. Please help me.
12 Mar 2017, 07:06pm
Hi Snehalata, Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad I could inspire you to take action in your life. I'll be right here to support you in this journey. You mentioned you have experience in 2 different fields but you didn't mention if you would like to go back to either of these fields. If you're undecided of what to choose - either from these 2 fields or a brand new line of work itself - first evaluate what you would want to do. Forget technical expertise. Forget educational qualifications. Think about what you want to do. Take me for example - I started my career in Business Intelligence reporting. But when I had to let go of that, simply because I was not in the USA anymore, I chose web development and writing as my lines of work because web development had always been a passion and writing was something I felt I was naturally good at. I still get Cognos calls even today but I won't go back because I love what I do now. So think about it. Where is your passion? Figuring that out takes a lot of time. Ask others around you too, but don't take their advice too literally. Just listen and note it down somewhere for comparison with your own thoughts. You know yourself the best. And there can be hidden sides to you that not even you must have explored so far. I'm an introvert, but everyday I go out of my comfort zone to talk to complete strangers to win projects. People I know told me it was useless to be in my line of work when I started, not because I didn't have the skills, but because they couldn't imagine I could talk easily or even persuasively with strangers for work. I'll wrap up here because I feel finding your line of work takes a lot of deep introspection. Once you have shortlisted your possible dream jobs or careers, then let's pick up the conversation :) Hope that works for you. Good luck! Thank you! Ankitaa Gohain Dalmia

Janani asked

Hi Ankitaa this is Janani here. Being married I left my career. Now I want to persue my career where little opportunities are available. Help me with getting work from home jobs.
09 Mar 2017, 04:35pm
Hi Janani, I understand what you are going through. I had to leave my career two times in the past - once when I got married and the other time when I had a baby. But I got back, both times.. not because there were ample opportunities out there, especially for work-from-home professionals, but because I wouldn't take 'No' for an answer. So be prepared to struggle and I assure you, you will be back on track as far as your career is concerned. To get started, use Sheroes to apply to jobs you know you are qualified for and would have the time for. Proficiency and the ability to deliver on time are your keys to success because you will be working from home. And of course, communication, more importantly - written communication. First, make sure your profile is filled out well here, and then start applying. Second, be polite when you are emailing someone for the first time, as well as every time. Give respect to gain respect. I personally hate it when a prospective employee starts the email with a "Hi!", even when my name is listed in the job posting! And finally, be patient. I did a lot of to and fro between LinkedIn and Sheroes before I landed a job through Sheroes. I don't know what type of work you are looking for, so I can't answer here specifically. But do look up your old colleagues and friends from the old job(s) on LinkedIn. TELL them you are looking for work-from-home opportunities. ASK them for help. They can't know you want their help, unless you ask them. I had a tough time with this - too much ego but then, I mellowed out. And a final word - you will find many people will ask you to work for less just because you are looking at work-from-home opportunities. In the beginning, you will have to compromise to build up your profile, but know your worth. Before starting any work, calculate how much you should be ideally earning - that will keep you motivated when patience revolts. Hope I could help you. Do let me know :)
