Deepthi asked

I have 4 years experience in It industry. Then accompanied my husband to UK and did my masters in CS and worked as a part time lecturer for an year. Been out of job with personal commitments for nearly 18 months. I have worked with c++, SQL, unix and vb.net. But now when I am trying to get back to job, i have lost confidence and don't know how to start or which technology. Confused and looking into some training institutes which assist in placements as well as training. Can you please suggest as to how to proceed?
29 Dec 2015, 03:37pm
Hi Deepthi, I think 18 months is too small a period for you to lose confidence. You just have to brush your skills and you'll be back in job soon. I would recommend you to pick a web based technology/language - maybe .Net or PHP and start building some simple stuff at home to get a hang of things. Since you already have a programming background, it should not take you more than a month to get acquainted with a new language. You could then start applying for jobs and at the very same time - start picking up some freelancing projects from upwork.com - that way you will be hands-on ready when you apply for jobs. Bangalore is a land of opportunities when it comes to tech, so you're at the right place. All you need is a little confidence - which will come as soon as you'll brush up your skills - and you'll be back in the game :)

Hi Abhinav, I have 3.5 years work experience in IT and Business Analytics. I am currently in US after on H4 visa (dependent visa). I would like to know if edx or coursera verified courses in Analytics will help in getting a job once I get back to India. TIA :)
22 Dec 2015, 10:35pm
Hi Abhirami, It depends from company to company. Enterprise level organizations would normally require more than that certifications from courses from Coursera. While an SME would be more willing to learn more about your actual analytics skills than a certification. So it depends on what kind of company are you looking to join. Courses from Coursera etc are good in terms of learning but if you are looking to do more on the web analytics front (and my recommendation is that you should be) - a Google Analytics certification might help you more than a Coursera certificate. Let me know if you have follow up questions. Thanks

Hi Abhinav this is anuradha here after so much of thinking I put my question to you. I have been married for 22years & never worked anytime till now as I'm from a conservative background. I'm a commerce graduate batch of 1987. I always wanted to work & be independent, now that I understand digital marketing is the thing & it doesn't call for any background or experience is there an opportunity for me to do something.
20 Dec 2015, 06:05pm
Hi Anuradha, I am happy to look at your will power to put this up. And by asking this question, you've already cleared your first hurdle, of breaking your mindset, and deciding to do something, Well, digital marketing doesn't need a skill as such but you'll have to practice a little bit or writing before you get in. At the end of the day, it's 'marketing' and unless your ad/content copy is good, it won't attract people. So I would recommend to go through a few good pages on Facebook and Twitter to understand how do people/companies create content that is liked by the masses. Zomato's page for instance has witty content and is liked by people. Once you've seen a few good profiles, then I would recommend you to start small by taking some freelancing work of creating/maintaining some social media profiles. You can get this work from sites like Upwork.com and here at Sheroes as well. On a site like Upwork - where you need to bid, do ensure that you are not quoting too high so as to get the project. Once you've got a project then that will put you in a comfortable position to grab more work. I would also like to recommend you to read a book, "Likeable Social Media by Dave Kerpen" to help you understand this space better. Hope this helps. And congratulations once again for taking that first step!

Hi abhinav ,Richa here. Interested in career transition from Manufacturing production background to Online/E-Commerce for Fashion.currently i am having 3 years of experience in QA/QC and having education Masters in Science and PGDM Operations, due to some circumstances i choose this manufacturing field but i have strong inclination in online fashion industry. kindly guide me how i can start my career in this field. do i need to do some specific courses if yes then what are these.recently i am trying for the same but i always get rejected by recruiters saying u don have relevant experience and if i try for entry level then also gap between my education and work creates hurdle because i have completed my education in 2012.
09 Dec 2015, 05:11am
Hi Richa, The best way to get into the fashion space is by pursuing a course at NIFT. They have courses that teach you exactly what you've mentioned and thus enable students to get a job in that space. You could apply for a PG course and get trained in the field. Similarly, Pearl Academy also offers some courses in this space and I believe they have a centre in Jaipur too. So you could explore that as well. Alternately, if you don't want to study more, you could look at joining any e-commerce company for now - in the procurement department. This would allow you to get into the relevant industry from where you could easily move on to the fashion ecom space. Procurement professionals are required by all ecom business and shouldn't be a problem for you get a job if you're good at your work :) Do remember though - since you are changing your industry, you might have to sacrifice a little bit on the salary but given that you are still young with no responsibilities, you should be willing to take that hit, as that will help you in the long run. Let me know if you have more questions. Thanks

Hi Pooja, Looking at your profile, I believe you could start of with helping people in managing their personal finances. There are portals like https://www.arthayantra.com where I believe you could sign up as an advisor and help people with finance and get paid in the process. Am sure there must be more such portals where you could become an advisor and start your career again. Obviously, you'll have to update yourself with the current products in the space. Alternately, you could also start of in the fin-tech product industry by joining some startup part time in the product management space. This industry is booming and is on the lookout for people who have finance and product management background. There are also companies like Ireslab (Noida) which are specialize in developing IT products for this industry and are looking to get people like you onboard. I guess that you should start looking at the kind of requirements for these job profiles and start polishing your skills accordingly, it's just a matter of time, you'll find something. All the best

Hi Vandana, If you are in the marketing space there are loads of opportunities for you. The industry should not be a constraint for you, as long as you are looking to continue in marketing. Alternately, you could start learning online marketing (there are lots of free and paid courses out there- just Google) and move into this space as this doesn't require any traveling. I want to increase my client base and also offer more in terms of content. But I am not sure how to go about it. I have been looking at areas of Technical Writing and Social Media Strategy. Can you give me your thoughts on this. Thanks.
09 Oct 2015, 04:43am
Hi Vidya, Thanks for your question. As far as getting more clients is concerned, I think you just have to keep looking for opportunities on platforms like Sheroes, Elance, Upwork, Gumtree etc. I believe there are quite a few opportunities posted everyday on these portals. Maybe you should subscribe to the kind of opportunities you would like to take up, to ensure you don't miss on any. Secondly, you should look to reach out to content agencies and build relations/partnerships for consistently getting work. Try to Google and you'll find lots of them. My recommendation is to focus on this as this way you will consistently get work without having to hunt for new work all the time. A good relationship with a few agencies would ensure you're engaged with work mostly. BTW, If you can write enterprise tech, then we also have an interesting opportunity http://www.niswey.com/careers/content-marketer-enterprise-technology/ If you want to move on the strategy part, you should look for opportunities like these: http://www.niswey.com/careers/content-marketer-enterprise-technology/ Importantly, since this is all web writing, you will need to know some bits of how to drive traffic through the content strategy. So in essence, learn some bits of content marketing - you should start going through some blogs on www.convinceandconvert.com and contentmarketinginstitute.com Hope you find some answers here, let me know if you have follow up questions. Hi Avani, There are lots of social media / content marketing jobs available nowadays. For instance this: https://sheroes.in/jobs/content-marketing--caterwow/NzYyOA== I think you need to keep looking consistently in order to crack one of them. It might be difficult for you to get a full time job right away so I would recommend you to take up freelancing assignments first. Sheroes, Elance, Upwork, Gumtree are some sites where you can find such opportunities. You should quote very low initially to get some work - in order to get experience. Once you have executed a few campaigns you should be confident enough to price higher or even apply for full time roles - as then you would relevant work experience. Based on your experience with these assignments you could decide whether you want to be on your own or take a job. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions.

Hi Jaya, I believe you want to provide services to people who want to setup their store. In that case, your first step should be to learn the basics of platforms like Magento, Shopify, WooCommerce etc so that you know how to implement it when you start off. These are the most common platforms and should give you a headstart in providing ecom services. Once you know that, you can start taking up projects from freelancing sites like odesk/elance. Once you've done enough projects and are confident, then you can start building your own company. Just take small steps at a time and you'll keep going. 22 Jul 2015, 07:09am
Hi Dimpal, First of all you don't need to be disheartened. Problems is keep coming up, our job is to not get blocked in our thoughts and look for solutions. So I would suggest, first try within Accenture, if they allow WFH options? I believe they do (as a friend had done once for a couple of months), but a lot depends on your manager. So do check that option before you quit. Next option is too look outside. There are a few companies that allow WFH options. One such company I am aware of is Srijan Technologies (srijan.net) - do check them. Apart from that, you should start looking for options on this platform itself. What is important is that you should continue to keep working so that your momentum is not broken. So in a worst case where you have to quit Accenture and wait till you get another job, you should keep taking up freelancing projects from sites like odesk.com/elance.com etc. Based on your skill set, you can keep yourself engaged and earning too at the same time. Trust this helps.

02 Jul 2015, 09:32pm
Hi Mahi, First of all, congratulations on taking the first step towards a new career! It is very easy to get bogged down and blame the world for your problems but very difficult to get up and take the world head on! You, with your question, have already removed your biggest hurdle, the inertia. And now, with just a little more effort, you will be back to your normal self and that too very soon. My recommendation is that you should start small. Since you have responsibilities and are a little out of touch, your first aim should be to get your confidence back. When you are geared up, start looking out for bigger opportunities. To start off, start looking for work from home jobs on this platform itself. the links below should help you http://sheroes.in/jobs/search/human-resources/location/employment-type/flexible-work-from-home/career-level/company http://sheroes.in/jobs/search/human-resources/location/employment-type/flexible-work-from-home/career-level/company http://sheroes.in/jobs/search/human-resources/location/employment-type/flexible-work-from-home/career-level/company There are a few opportunities available and you must keep checking that category to get updated about latest opportunities. Also, keep checking LinkedIn and other job portals in parallel. My biggest advise to you right now is: do not feel sad. Ignore what the society is saying. Don't beat yourself up and get into a positive attitude, as soon as possible. All the best!

17 Jun 2015, 06:14am
Hi Basudha, First of all you should complete your profile on Sheroes. Filling up about your work will enable prospective employers to see your skill set and experience. As far as the courses are concerned, you can learn from a lot of portals, based on your skill set. Stanford, like you mentioned, is definitely one option. Other options are Coursera and then you could also learn specific skills from specialist portals like Codeacademy is for code. Once you have brushed up your skills, I would recommend to look for work from home / freelance opportunities. This platform itself offers a lot of such options. You just need to select the correct skill set in the search filters. Beyond that, you should start looking for assignments on elance / odesk and other freelancing portals. They are fairly easy to go through and you would easily find relevant opportunities. Initially, you should quote low prices in order to get the jobs. Over time, you could start increasing your financial rewards. Thankfully, in this age, finding work from across the globe is fairly easy now :) Trust this helps. All the best! P.S. 07 Apr 2015, 02:32pm
Hi Avantika, Good to know that you want to get back to job. Since it's been a little time since you last worked, the first thing you'd have to do is brush up your skill set. Since you were into QA, you would have to figure out the current trend in terms of tools. Automation is what would be prevalent in most companies, so I guess you should be aware of them. Also, mobile/apps are currently in trend and am sure there are a lot of opportunities for mobile apps testing teams. Again, you should be aware of the frameworks in use currently. Interestingly, this platform itself has an opportunity for QA professionals: http://sheroes.in/jobs/qa-tester-noida-sheroes/NTcyNg%3D%3D - guess you should explore it as I am sure, Sheroes would be happy to welcome returning professionals. In order to brush up your skills, I recommend that you should also do a few freelance assignments to get back hands on. Elance.com/oDesk.com have a lot of freelance opportunities. You should not worry about the money initially, and try to pick up a few projects just for the sake of getting hands on. Once you've done a few projects, I am sure you will be high on confidence and more importantly, you would have recent work to show in your CV. Those two should be good enough to get you back to a full time job quickly. All you need to have is a little patience and your career will take off again. All the best!

Hi Deepika, Good to know you want to start so early. Since you guys are short on time, I would suggest you to setup a store quickly through Wordpress using the WooCommerce plugin. Being an engineer, you might be tempted to look from the tech angle, my advice would be to ignore tech and look on the operations side of the business, like, how would you source the products that you want to sell? how would you ensure delivery once an order is placed? I would be able to help you better if you tell me what is the niche for your ecom store. Also, if you can share the exact problems you are facing, I could advise you better. If you have no technical expertise, my advise to you would be to not build a website at all, instead, go for a platform like Shopify or Zepo. Hi Nivedhitha, I think you are in a very good position right now to move/switch to online. With lots of fashion ecommerce portals coming up, you could easily get through to them. Since bigger ecom players would be looking for specific skills, I would suggest you to join a startup wherein you could play multiple roles. That would allow you to learn quickly and more importantly give you a chance to apply your theoretical knowledge to be put into practice and get hands-on experience. Once you spend some time in a startup, you would be in a position to decide which area you would want to specialize in and make your career. Trust this helps. Let me know if you have more questions. Thanks

Hello Abhinav. I seek your mentorship in navigating my career in digital marketing space. By qualification , i am a post graduate in science and have worked for around 6 years with leading consulting firms on energy and environmental and social sector issues. Due to family commitments had to recently forgo my full time flourishing career in consulting and look for options that offered flexibility and scope of personal expression. Digital Marketing a a field seems promising right now. I am keen to explore the media and its future for me as a career. I am about to complete my 6 month long training in digital marketing with Digital Vidya soon. Can you please suggest me how to navigate further on from here. Any good leads to associate for projects etc. Also any additional skills that can come handy.

Ruchi asked

Hi Abhinav, I am an IT professional with over 8 years of very diverse experience and a gap of about two years in which I gained some experience in the NGO space and as a voice over and radio professional. In IT I have worked as an analyst programmer, team lead and systems analyst in various states of India and Australia, in which the last five years have been in Australia. I wanted to request for your advise, if possible in person/over the phone, as my case is rather unique. I am looking for the right avenue for myself possibly in the entrepreneurial or digital marketing spaces but am open to everything under the sun really. Owing to my current health I am unable to do a rigorous full time job and am looking for maybe 8 hrs x 5 days a week or flexi-timing work.
05 Nov 2014, 07:26am
Hi Ruchi, Thanks for your question. Your previous experience suggests that you are well versed with IT, so my first suggestion would be why don't you try in the same field itself. You should probably go for a Business Analyst kind of role I believe. There are opportunities in IT where flexible timings or even working remotely are allowed. A few of them are listed on Sheroes also (in the jobs section). Or outside, you could look for jobs like http://www.srijan.net/careers/scrum-master/ (Srijan Technologies allows flexible work options). I would not suggest an Entrepreneurial career right now because you've mentioned your current health doesn't allow rigorous activity and starting a business will need a fitter you. Unless you are really interested in marketing, I would also not suggest a role in the digital marketing sector also, as the learning curve is steep there and will require quite some time commitment from your end. If you want to start, you could start off with some trainings or internships and see if you actually find that field interesting. (There's a Digital Vidya Internship in digital marketing listed in the jobs section, you could apply there). Ruchi I would actually suggest you to choose a career/path which you like and what you would really want to do. Does IT still attract you? Do you want to be associated with companies working in the social space? What is it that you would enjoy doing 8 hrs, 5 days a week? While it maybe a difficult question to answer, you could start off with striking off what you don't want to do. Once you list a few options that you would like to do, you could look for opportunities on Sheroes or outside of it. You could also post a follow up question here, once you think you have some clarity. As part of the Sheroes.in guidelines, I am not allowed to share my direct contact. Also, the idea of the platform is to share our learnings so that others can learn from your questions and vice versa, hence we're keeping it open. Trust this helps. Please feel free to post more/followup questions, I'll be happy to answer. Thanks

I am a mother of a 1 month old baby and on maternity leave till April. After completing the same I would like to change my job to one which is not a typical 9 to 5 kind of job and is more flexible in nature. I have closed commercial deals in digital marketing in my current job and would like to switch to the same. Wanted to know what will be required in my profile to move into digital marketing?
26 Oct 2014, 08:56am
Sapna, first of all congratulations! Hope both you and your kid are doing well. In order to switch to digital marketing, I would recommend you to go through a small course (online or offline whichever is convenient) where in you could learn the basics of the field. You would need to learn about SEO, social media marketing and email marketing primarily as this would kickstart your career. When you get your hands dirty, you would then need to know the analytics and ROI elements. Some of these will be understanding of tools while others will be about deriving conclusions from the data you get from the tools. Alternatively, you could also do this WFH internship: http://sheroes.in/jobs/digital-marketing-internship-digital-vidya/MjE3Mw%3D%3D - this would give you a good hands on knowledge of digital marketing. Digital marketing is still evolving and hence a lot of learning will happen on the job, so such an internship could really help you in acquiring the desired knowledge. Trust this helps, do let me know if you have more questions. Thanks and all the best!

My husband has a market research firm and I was pretty much occupied with it so far. I have been on lookout for opportunities recently in .net. I did not find so far a good company, offering the Remuneration as per Industry Standards. Will 8-9 months long gap to be considered.? Do you suggest if it is better joining a normal firm with less salary and then looking out for opportunities or waiting for the right match. I'm confused regarding this. Please suggest.

Hi Abhinav, I have about 7 years of experience as a software engineer. I went on a break after that for 3 years and rejoined work as a technical writer, as I wanted flexible hours and less stressful work. My concern is that i when I joined after 3 years, as it was a profile change for me, I joined at a lesser salary than what I had when I left work. I am now making the same that I was making six years back.It is demotivating mainly because I can see that the work pressure is no less, except that I have flexible working hours. It has been 2 years that I am working as a technical writer now. These are my questions to you: 1. Do you think that salaries are lesser in the writing field and I should accept it? 2. Do you think quitting a full time job and getting into a digital career could be more rewarding financially or vice-versa?(of course I understand with the right training etc. etc.) 3. Should I look at a job switch (again full time) or look at online work? Thanks, Ashima
