Abhiraj comes from a naval background. His father, Commodore Ashok Bhal, is now retired and has settled down in Visakhapatnam. The Commodore is an IITian having done his electrical engineering from IIT Roorkee. He joined the Indian Navy as an Electrical Engineer specialising in weapons. Cmde Bhal had a fruitful career in the Navy having served on a number of frontline warships including the missile destroyer INS Rana as the Electrical Officer. He also commanded the offshore missile base INS Tunir off Mumbai. Having retired from the Indian Navy, he is currently working with the Hindustan Shipyard Ltd. in Visakhapatnam.
Abhiraj spent his early days in Mumbai studying at the Naval Public School and then subsequently moved to Visakhapatnam in his 8th standard. He completed his schooling from there itself before he moved to IIT Kanpur to do his B.Tech, thus following his father’s footsteps in the field of engineering. He followed his B.Tech, with an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad and then began his soaring career. He got placed with the Boston Consulting Group and worked with them on projects that involved consulting for major companies like the Suzlon, Tatas, and PNB on assignments across the world.
Yet, deep down, he wanted to have his own company and setting his path to build his dream... Abhiraj co-founded UrbanClap in October 2014 along with two friends Varun Khaitan and Raghav Chandra. The three came up with the idea of UrbanClap with the objective of creating a large tech business to solve a primary customer need in India. They realised how fragmented the local services industry in the country really was and how difficult it could be to find and hire the right service professional and they decided to launch a start-up to solve this problem by leveraging mobile technology.
In April 2015, UrbanClap raised $1.6 million, in its first round of funding from SAIF Partners, Accel Partners and the founders of Snapdeal, Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal. The company has grown more than 40 times since April and aims to expand to 10 more cities by end of this fiscal year. Recently, they raised another $10 million from their existing investors, SAIF partners and Accel partners. With more than 4,000 service providers currently listed on the platform, and over 50,000 App downloads, UrbanClap is currently the largest mobile-based services marketplace in India.
UrbanClap uses a proprietary matchmaking engine that matches customers with the best and most relevant service providers in their locality. Customers receive responses in a few hours, while service providers enjoy the benefit of more business and higher conversion rates because they only get relevant leads. To use UrbanClap, a customer first selects a category and then answers several questions on its Android app, iOS app or website.
The services provided by UrbanClap, includes photographers, salon at home, home cleaning & repairs, yoga & guitar instructors, and many more. Whether you are looking to decorate your home, get candid pictures on your wedding day; plan your kid’s birthday party or get healthier, UrbanClap provides the answer to all service needs. Using the power of the net, UrbanClap has helped structure the highly unorganised services market in India. It aspires to make hiring a service professional as easy and straightforward as buying a product from a top e-commerce marketplace. From a plumber to a wedding photographer or a yoga teacher, you can find everything on UrbanClap. You only need to take a few seconds, enter your needs on the Android app and the platform will bring the right professionals for you.
