Fitness is an exciting, fast-moving & emerging sector. Have you noticed a new gym coming up in your neighbourhood literally every month? And hence industry desperately needs fitness and nutrition coaches.

There are new fitness and nutrition trends every day. The industry is changing all the time, meaning you will constantly be learning. This is a career with excellent long-term prospects and great flexibility.

Starting Salary: If you are working a couple of hours every day for 20 days in a month, you can expect 20K to 30K.

What does a Fitness or Nutrition Coach do?

A major responsibility for all personal trainers is motivating their clients. Many people find exercising boring and lose their enthusiasm after a few workouts, while simply want to learn new routines to help them achieve their goals faster. Personal trainers join clients during their workouts to provide support, ensure movements are being done correctly, and encourage them to constantly challenge themselves. These days, much of this motivation is given digitally by staying connected with your client and motivating them via social media, whatsapp etc.

As a nutritionist, you will advise people on what to eat in order to lead a healthy lifestyle or achieve a specific health-related goal.

What are the requirements to become a Fitness Instructor or a Nutrition Consultant?

This area of work is open to all graduates, however the following subjects may be particularly useful: physiology, biology, physiotherapy, human anatomy etc.

If you do not have a related degree, you may be required to demonstrate a genuine interest in fitness & nutrition. To become a fitness trainer one has to go through the training in the desired field, e.g yoga training- 200hrs to become yoga teacher, personal training course to become a personal trainer.

What's it really like?

Being a fitness trainer or a nutrition coach will require you to know about, understand, and be able to program all different kinds of exercise to meet clients’ goals and interests. You’ll also have to be able to tell trends from fads (yep, they’re different). From Jazzercise and Tae Bo to P90X and indoor cycling, the way we work out and the kinds of exercise people want to try have been shaped by countless trends, some of which stick around to energize the workout world and others that fall flat. It’s the job of personal trainers to stay on top of what’s in and what’s out and how the research supports or dispels the effectiveness of various kinds of exercise. That way, you can write fitness routines that’s not only proven to work, but is also the kind of workout your client enjoys doing.

In Nutrition, you can work in many settings, including hospitals, cafeterias, nursing homes, and schools. You can stay up to date via workshops, certifications, conferences and self-study courses.
