Now that the kids are getting older and more independent, you are ready to go back to work. Where to begin? We recommend - Start with LinkedIn.

The marketplace has changed tremendously over the last few years. Employers are offering more flexibility to employees. There are full-time, part-time, work from home and Flexi working opportunities. Employers are constantly looking for smart and experienced professionals. LinkedIn is a great place to showcase your talent to a prospective employer.

A good LinkedIn profile is the most crucial place for you to find jobs and for companies to find you. You can build a presence on LinkedIn and let the employers know the type of job you are looking for.

Using LinkedIn can be a little intimidating to beginners. So, we have put together seven tips to make it simpler for you.

1. A picture speaks louder than words!

Add a professional looking photo. Never add a picture of you holidaying, in sunglasses on a beach.  Not having a photo or having a casual photo on your profile states that you are not serious.

Also, add some graphic elements—certification logos, affiliation— as and where appropriate in your profile. And, make sure to upload any sample work, case studies, or other media that showcases your work achievements.

2. LinkedIn Summary

The LinkedIn summary is the new cover letter to prospective employers. Highlight past accomplishments and include details of the role you would like to play today. This is especially important if you are trying for the second innings. Craft a purposeful narrative that pulls together all of your professional past and aspirations for future. This will help you appear focused and determined.

Highlight skills and strengths that demonstrate why you would be ideal for a position. If you are unsure, talk to a Career Coach or a Mentor who will be able to help you identify your strengths.

3. Employment History

Recruiters look at your LinkedIn profile sometimes even before your resume. We recommend you spend considerable time refining your profile. Include all your past full-time work experience, responsibilities, accomplishments, and milestones during each of your jobs.

Add in your most recent experience. While you are out of the workforce, keep your skills relevant. And include that experience on LinkedIn. What activities were you involved in during those years? Volunteering with a Non-Profit? Supported a cause? Involved with a Local community? Helped a Start-up? Regardless of you getting a paycheck – Work is Work. Make sure to include all work experience on your LinkedIn profile as responsibilities under different positions.

4. Network & Reach out

You will find all your ex-colleagues on LinkedIn. Reach out and connect with them by sending "connect requests" on LinkedIn. Connect with your friends who are in employment. A friend can like your posts and that can highlight your profile to a prospective employer.

Another important step is to request recommendations from colleagues you have worked before with. They can include your bosses, co-workers, people who reported to you. You can also reach out to them via email or phone and ask if they would be willing to give you a LinkedIn recommendation. Sometimes to make it little easier for them you can send them a draft recommendation for their review. Tell them exactly the type of roles you are now looking for and the skills you would like them to highlight.

This process will improve your LinkedIn Profile and give you more credibility as a professional.

5. Get Found

Let the potential employers know that you are actively seeking. Let everyone in your network know – Your ex-employers, managers, co-workers, even the ones you competed with. Start by endorsing people. It is very easy to endorse people on LinkedIn. Also if you endorse someone, the possibility of them endorsing you back is very high.

Also, when you visit a LinkedIn profile, let people see that you visited them. It’s also a non-intrusive way of saying “Remember Me?”

Keep an eye on “Who’s Viewed your Profile". This is an important step to know about people who are taking notice of you on LinkedIn.

6. Join professional groups

Being active in LinkedIn groups is a great way to find connections and build your brand. It helps you in being found by recruiters and hiring managers and find jobs which are not listed elsewhere. You can easily find people who posted a particular job and make personal contact with him or her prior to applying for a position to learn more about the role and the company.

Being noticed right away in a group might not be easy, hence start working on your visibility – Engage in discussions, ask questions and share content.

7. Follow companies

When you follow a company, you'll see company and career information, job listings, company news, corporate information and company updates. Review your connections first and second-degree connections at the organizations. This can be found on the right side of the company profile page.
