9 Best Rom-Com Movies You'll Adore & Laugh About
The season of romance is upon us and it is that time of the year when there is no escaping it. From gift shop windows decorated in red to cafés introducing special menus, when it is February, love is quite literally in the air!
In fact while writing, I can literally see love quotes hanging through my rooftop.
Romantic Comedy movies don't need any occasion to watch. Best is when you are feeling loved and want to celebrate, pick one of these even if you have watched them several times.
And irrespective of whether we have found the great love of our lives or not, each one of us loves watching it unfold on the big screens.
From the grand gestures to the little things, packing in some of the classics and some of the newbies.
Here is a list of 9 top romantic comedies that’ll make you laugh, shed some happy tears and generally feel all mushy.
#1. Sleepless in Seattle
Nora Ephron’s 1993 film about a widower whose son calls in to a radio show in an attempt to find him a new wife is everything that feels are made of.
Starring Tom Hanks as the brooding widower who believes love can happen only once and Meg Ryan playing an unhappily engaged reporter who finds herself inexplicably attracted to the story and the Empire State Building which is important enough to be character of its own.
This film is a must have on your Rom-Com watch list no matter what. An utterly charming movie, this one is for all those who believe that second loves can also be true love.
#2. Hum Tum
Not your typical boy-meets-girl film, Hum Tum takes the battle of the sexes to the next level.
From not being able to tolerate each other to falling for each other over a span of 7 years, this film keeps us wanting more and more....
Saif’s comic timing and Rani’s quiet brilliance paired with Hum and Tum’s fun banter is what makes you want to watch this romantic-comedy over and over again!
#3. Breakfast at Tiffany's
No one has stolen more hearts than Audrey Hepburn as the beautiful, charming Holly Golightly.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s is the story of a friendship struck between Paul Varjak, a writer and his neighbour Holly who is a naïve freewheeling party girl whose lifestyle is financed by the rich suitors who always seem to be surrounding her.
Generations of viewers who consider this the greatest rom-com movie of all time and it cannot be denied that the film is everything our romantic fantasies are made of!
#4. Pretty Woman
No list of rom-coms that is half good can afford to skip this one. This gorgeous tale of the beautiful, charming prostitute (Julia Roberts) and the Wall Street corporate giant (Richard Gere) is impossible not to fall in love with. If you haven't watched this one already, do yourself a favour and watch it now. If you have, you should rewatch it anyway!
5. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na
Best friends falling in love may not be the most original idea out there but director Abbas Tyrewala’s storytelling makes this film refreshing anyway.
Packed with silly jokes, interesting characters, fun banter and endearing moments, this slice of life story is something each one of us aspires for and at the same time, can relate to. If you love college stories this rom-com is best for you.
#6. When Harry Met Sally
A must have on any list of best rom-coms, When Harry Met Sally is an epic in this genre.
Spanning over 10 years of friendship between Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal’s characters, it is the kind of story where no one can help but ask, “Why aren’t those two together?” Should best friends fall in love? If they do, what happens next?
This romantic comedy movie is best and should be watched by every romantic soul out there.
We shall always cherish it for giving us the precious, "When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible."
#7. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
If there is one film that understands millennials and how they think, this rom com is it.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani captures this young and restless generation, their idea of romance, their friendships, their dilemmas perfectly well.
Throw in the gorgeous pairing of Ranbir and Deepika, beautiful locations and foot tapping music and it is no surprise that this film is a winner.
#8. Love Actually
Ten separate but intertwined stories come together in this Christmas themed movie to give us every single clichéd thing we love about love.
From the Prime Minister falling for a junior staff member to a man nursing a secret crush on his best friend’s new bride, this rom-com film exists to remind us that when it comes to love, no-one is immune. Number one, if not best, on the list of holiday watches, Love Actually is a film that stays with you long after the end credits roll.
#9. Jab We Met
Movies, especially romantic-comedies have often been guilty of making damsels in distressed out of their heroines. Imtiaz Ali challenges all that in Jab We Met and gives us Geet - outspoken, unapologetic, modern who needs no man to do the wooing of the rescuing.
We cannot talk about this film without mentioning Kareena Kapoor’s brilliance in portraying Geet. Shahid’s understated, mature Aditya complements her perfectly.
Jab We Met is a movie that we’ve watched so many times that we pretty much know it by heart but then, we’ll watch it once more, anyway. Afterall best is best no matter how many times you have wached it!!
