“I called off my engagement against the wishes of my parents and others. Raised eyebrows and false allegations were thrown my way. This was around 8 years back, when all this was still new to come from a ‘woman’. I stuck to my decision and am glad to this day about it,” responded Rashi Mital, freelance writer, blogger at LiveItYoung and self-proclaimed "supermom" to our tweet last week about that one #TakeCharge decision that changed your life.
Well, we got a slew of responses from women across various spheres of their lives.
No Turning Back
Like Rashi, Uzma Fathima, an entrepreneur from the SHEROES community who has been through many ups and downs and grown from strenght to strenght now, agrees that sometimes, strong decisions have to be taken to turn your life around. “I decided to divorce my ex-husband because of the way he used to treat me. I have never looked back since and now, I’m living a happy life with another partner and our son.” Hats off to Uzma who now actively shares her knowledge and learnings with other SHEROES!
Opting To Work From Home
Balancing work and home is always a challenge. It’s a tough choice to be made and there's never a right or wrong one. For Preeti Talwar, becoming a stay-at-home mom was a decision she made, with no remorse. Eventually, as her kids grew up, she took up her passion once again, while managing responsibilities.
Alka Thakur also decided to quit her high-paying job of seven years to spend time with her daughter and she feels her life has transformed in a positive way since. She's now a freelance technical writer who has no regrets or complaints about taking that decision to quit her job. In the end, it paid off.
Most of the times, women forget to give themselves the credit they deserve to realise their self-worth. Pallavy Borah, an army wife and recruitment expert, realised early on that moving ahead with such an attitude would make growth much tougher. Her life changed the moment she sternly decided that her job, however small or big, is as important as anyone else’s in the family. “I deserve equal respect,” is her take. Yes, we hear you Pallavy! Your attitude towards yourself will determine the attitude of others towards you.
Small Acts, Big Impact
For each person, life changing resolutions can be different. It can be as simple as being able to forgive someone for the way they treated you. Deepti Beri, Chief Commercial Officer at SHEROES shares a personal learning, “I am fortunate that very few people have breached my trust. But I decided to forgive those who did and it has changed my life for better. I haven’t found a way to love them again. I believe indifference is a better emotion than hatred."
Following Your Passion
While courage comes in many forms, it came for Piyusha Vir, a freelance writer, SHEROES community champion and a featured writer on various digital platforms, as a life-changing decision. “I quit a good, full time job and just decided to explore alternate options to put my skills to good use. A week later, I found myself taking up writing.”
Satarupa B Kaur, avid Twitterati, also found her calling as a writer. But it wasn’t easy to go that way, “My family wanted me to get into civil services. But I wanted to build a career in writing, so I moved out of my home and pursued my passion.”
“To become a happy human being, I had to stop giving into the temptation of being called a ‘superwoman’! It might sound simple but everything around me had to be transformed for that to work. It has made me a better person and a better professional too,” says Mitu Samar, a leadership coach, reputation coach and media trainer from Mumbai. “And you know who resisted this change the most? Me!”
